PFAS widely detectible in U.S. freshwater fish, new study warns
If you like to eat freshwater fish, a new study published this month by advocacy scientists and Duke University graduate researchers is unwelcome news. Average PFAS levels were about 2.7 times higher in fish caught in urban versus remote water bodies. The most frequently detected compound was PFOS, a well-known variety which is no longer produced domestically because replacement PFAS chemicals have been developed. Michigan’s PFAS fish advisories are based on toxicological screening calculations, or values, which DHHS says were last updated about 10 years ago. Kashian said additional PFAS chemicals may have been entering the system over the past decade.

MARINETTE, WI — University of Wisconsin researchers say they’ve linked a plume of toxic PFAS chemicals entering Lake Michigan to a firefighting foam manufacturer. The PFAS fingerprint in Green Bay is nearly identical to PFAS associated with Tyco and includes PFAS known to be active ingredients in firefighting foams, researchers said. Tyco is one of nearly 20 companies the Wisconsin attorney general sued in July alleging environmental contamination caused by PFAS chemicals. In Wisconsin, PFAS spiked in drinking water during an enormous October fire which destroyed a warehouse in which Tyco firefighting foam was stored.
