Pompeo unloads on US universities for China ties
WASHINGTON โ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday accused U.S. universities of caving to Chinese pressure to blunt or bar criticism of the Chinese Communist Party. Pompeo took aim at universities across the U.S., claiming they refused to address the Trump administrationโs concerns about Chinaโs attempts to influence students and academics. Pompeo defended the Trump administration's tough stance on China in remarks at the Georgia Institute of Technology. โMIT wasnโt interested in having me give this speech on their campus," Pompeo said. โNow, thank God, Vera was eventually released, and returned to the U.S,โ Pompeo said of the student.
MIT develops online tool to help calculate risk of contracting COVID-19 while indoors with other people
DETROIT โ Given how widespread COVID-19 is, you should assume that anyone could be infected. The practical question is -- how long is it safe to be in a room with other people if you assume one of them is infected? Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology used complex mathematical modeling to develop an online tool that allows people to calculate the answer. The model can help people wrap their head around all the different things that increase or decrease the risk. However, the model makes a lot of assumptions and itโs only as good as the assumptions turn out to be.

MIT professor wins top AI award for cancer, drug research
โ A Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor using computer science to detect cancer and discover new drugs has won a new $1 million award for artificial intelligence. The world's biggest AI society awarded its top prize Wednesday to Regina Barzilay, a professor at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. MIT says Barzilay is a breast cancer survivor whose 2014 diagnosis led her to shift her AI work to creating systems for drug development and early cancer diagnosis. She's the inaugural winner of the new annual award given by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and funded by Chinese online education company Squirrel AI. It's meant to elevate AI advancements to the level of a Nobel Prize or computer science's Turing Award, while also highlighting AI research that benefits society.

Judge to hear arguments in challenge to foreign student rule
New visas would not be issued to students at schools planning to provide all classes online, which includes Harvard. Colleges say the policy puts students safety at risk and hurts schools financially. Immigration officials, however, say they told colleges all along that any guidance prompted by the pandemic was subject to change. They say the rule is consistent with existing law barring international students from taking classes entirely online. Federal officials say they are providing leniency by allowing students to keep their visas even if they study online from abroad this fall.
Johns Hopkins sues to block rule on international students
BALTIMORE Johns Hopkins University has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the Trump administration's decision to make international students leave the U.S. if they intend to take classes entirely online starting this fall. ICE notified colleges Monday that international students will be forced to leave the U.S. or transfer to another college if their schools operate entirely online this fall. MORE: Michigan universities trying to prevent deportation of international studentsThe guidance says international students wont be exempt even if an outbreak forces their schools online during the fall term. About 5,000 international students are enrolled at Johns Hopkins. The school has plans for hybrid semesters with a mix of in-person and online classes.
Michigan universities trying to prevent deportation of international students
DETROIT Wayne State and Oakland University will join the likes of Harvard, MIT and the University of Michigan in a fight to keep international students from being deported. The White House said if colleges dont reopen, international students will have to finish their studies online from their home countries. Rather than letting their international students be deported if schools to go a 100 percent online learning model -- they are figuring out how to make courses with the minimum bar of accommodation to keep those students visas safe. Yue Zhuo, an international student from China, left her home country to become an educator at Oakland University. She wouldnt be able to go back to China to continue her work online because of government censorship.
Harvard, MIT sue to block ICE rule on international students
The lawsuit, filed in Boston's federal court, seeks to prevent federal immigration authorities from enforcing the rule. The guidance says international students won't be exempt even if an outbreak forces their schools online during the fall term. The guidance was released the same day Harvard announced it would be keeping its classes online this fall. Many schools have also come to depend on tuition revenue from international students, who typically pay higher tuition rates. It creates an urgent dilemma for thousands of international students who became stranded in the U.S. last spring after the coronavirus forced their schools to move online.

APNewsBreak: State investigating MIT lab radiation complaint
It's not immediately clear what levels of radiation the accelerator produced or what health risks, if any, they pose. State health officials say the radiation risk of an accelerator is dependent on its type, size and capacity. Tony Sharon, MIT's deputy executive vice president, said staff not directly working with radioactive materials would only be exposed to "natural background levels of radiation." "There's no need to keep this stuff," he said of the radioactive materials. State environmental officials are also investigating whether OpenAg dumped wastewater containing nitrogen in levels higher than state regulations allow at its Bates lab site.
MIT engineers test Leonardo da Vinci's bridge design
But what would it have been like if da Vinci's design had been constructed? But the researchers wanted to know if da Vinci's design would have been viable at the time of its creation. But it highlights the brilliance of da Vinci's design. "What we can learn from Leonardo da Vinci's design is that the form of a structure is very important for its stability," Bast said. Ochsendorf said the team wanted to know if da Vinci's idea "could actually have stood up."

Ex-MIT employee thought hiding gifts was protocol
Over the weekend Joi Ito, the director of the Media Lab at MIT, resigned. CNN has reached out to MIT to inquire about its policies with regards to Epstein donations and for a response to Cohen's comments. In his statement, Cohen said he is, like others, "disgusted and distraught by Jeffrey Epstein's conduct." "I did not witness anything I understood to be illegal, and I never solicited gifts from Mr. Epstein," Cohen said in his statement. It added that "Brown has not, in its history, received any funds from Jeffrey Epstein."
Top MIT official resigns in wake of explosive report
Ito submitted his resignation Saturday as lab director and as a professor, according to a statement from MIT President L. Rafael Reif. The internal communications dating back to 2014 include several references to Epstein being allowed to make small donations anonymously. Other examples of the efforts to distance MIT from Epstein include emails between undisclosed participants discussing taking Epstein off an event invite list. The donations went to the MIT Media Lab or Seth Lloyd, a professor of mechanical engineering, according to an August email from Reif. Ito vowed to raise money equivalent to the amount of donations media lab received from Epstein to support nonprofits that focus on survivors of trafficking.

MIT says it's reviewing donations from Jeffrey Epstein
(CNN) - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is reviewing about $800,000 it received from foundations controlled by accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, MIT's president said. The school also will donate that amount to a charity benefiting Epstein's victims or other sexual abuse victims, President L. Rafael Reif said in an email. The review will focus on the facts around the donations, made over 20 years, and how the school handles contributions and can improve that process, Reif said. The donations went to the MIT Media Lab or Seth Lloyd, a professor of mechanical engineering, according to Reif's email. Lloyd and Media Lab Director Joi Ito wrote public apologies to Epstein's victims and others for "judgments made over a series of years," Reif said.

Are parts of India becoming too hot for humans?
Heat waves in India usually take place between March and July and abate once the monsoon rains arrive. Experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say that even if the world succeeds in cutting carbon emissions, limiting the predicted rise in average global temperatures, parts of India will become so hot they will test the limits of human survivability. Last year, there were 484 official heat waves across India, up from 21 in 2010. Many places around the world have endured heat waves so far this year, including parts of Spain, China, Nepal and Zimbabwe. The second is the more optimistic prediction of an average increase of 2.25 degrees Celsius.
