Months of hard work culminated in the Michigan high school volleyball state championships at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena, and while only four teams were able to finish the year with a win, squads from all over the state had plenty to be proud of in 2022. A big source of pride comes from the talented individuals who took the court this season, and the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association honored more than 200 of the state’s top players when it released its 2022 all-state teams. Wyatt Bower completed 11 of 16 passes for 131 yards and four touchdowns to lead Corunna. Peyton TerMeer caught a pair of TD passes while Jaden Edington and Dylan Quirk caught one apiece. Jaden Edington led the defense with nine tackles and Bower had eight. Ryan Henne rushed for three North Branch TDs while Aidan Swoish and Lucas Schapman ran for one apiece.

Charlie Rawlins rushed 17 times for 188 yards and two touchdowns in 28-24 victory over previously unbeaten Gladstone, which was ranked No. Durand also got two touchdowns from Gabe Lynn, who rushed for 64 yards and caught four passes for 32 yards and two 2-pointers. Henne rushed 10 times for 199 yards and Schapman ran eight times for 126 yards in addition to making eight tackles. Davis completed 13 of 19 passes for 181 yards and Jaymes Vines caught seven passes for 135 yards. North Branch has 10 sophomores on its roster, five of whom started in Tuesday night’s Division 2 regional semifinal match against Essexville Garber at Mt. “We’re excited about the future but why not now?” North Branch coach Jim Fish said after a 25-18, 25-22, 25-11 victory. Members of the coaches association certainly like what they’ve seen from North Branch this year. Fish isn’t the only one who thinks North Branch is capable of returning to the state semifinals and finals Nov. 18-20 in Battle Creek.

North Branch coach Jeremy Ferman saw his team rally for a 21-14 win Friday, then learned Tuesday that the Detroit Lions named him the Michigan high school Coach of the Week for Week 7. The Broncos trailed Richmond, 14-0, in the fourth quarter before North Branch scored 21 consecutive points to earn a 21-14 Blue Water Area Conference win. Ferman is in his 29th season of coaching high school football and his fifth as the North Branch head coach. The Lions honor a high school football coach each week of the regular season, awarding the program a $1,000 donation. The Lions will also honor a Coach of the Year, with that program receiving a $3,000 donation.

Catholic Central built a 21-0 lead at halftime before trading touchdowns with Davison in the second half. Davison’s points came on a pair of touchdown passes from Braylen Himmelein to Teon Armstrong. The first covered eight yards 1:49 into the second half and the second was four yards with 4:13 left. Lucas Schapman scored North Branch’s lone touchdown on a seven-yard reception from Will Damaska midway through the third quarter. Dorijan Jackson also scored a TD for the Trojans and quarterback Brevin Jackson threw two touchdown passes.

MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI -- A 37-year-old North Branch man was killed and a 40-year-old Lapeer man was injured Thursday after a pickup truck crashed into a tree in Lapeer County’s Mayfield Township. Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to to a crash off of Haines Road east of Roods Lake at 2:25 p.m. Thursday, April 1, according to a sheriff’s department news release. A 2003 Dodge pickup truck driven by the 40-year-old male was traveling east on Haines Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the release. Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by Lapeer City Fire and Rescue, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, Medstar Ambulance Service, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Division, Michigan State Police-Lapeer Post, the Department of Natural Resource and Byers Wrecker Service in Lapeer. The crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.

North Branch didn’t have time to call a play. Morris and then knocked off Goodrich to earn a spot in the championship game vs. North Branch. Unfortunately for Powers, the 6-foot-2 Gebhardt wasn’t able to play vs. North Branch because her family had a vacation planned and wasn’t able to reschedule despite trying. The teams were tied 6-6 after the first quarter and 14-14 at halftime before North Branch took a 26-22 lead to the fourth. North Branch (12-6) was led by Emily Ludescher with 18 points, including four in overtime.

LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. – The body of a 23-year-old man was found Sunday morning in a pickup truck that had gone off the road in Lapeer County. Police said someone discovered an overturned truck in a swampy area at about 8:45 a.m. According to authorities, the driver -- and only occupant in the vehicle -- had attended a Halloween Party and left at about midnight. Police said the truck hit several trees before coming to a stop on its passenger side in a swampy area near the road. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office at 810-656-1015.

NORTH BRANCH TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Officials in Lapeer County are looking for three children who were last seen Tuesday night. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a great sweater and pink shoes. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and blue shoes. She was last seen wearing black pants and a shirt.
