Cubans stranded for 33 days now in US immigration detention
They waved flags to catch the attention of a Coast Guard helicopter crew that flew over the island while on a routine mission Monday. A Coast Guard helicopter earlier this week spotted the two men and one woman and hoisted them in baskets from a rocky cliff in Anguilla Cay, a Bahamian islet close to Cuba. The Associated Press requested interviews with the survivors, but Coast Guard and immigration officials have not released their identities and did not grant access for interviews. The U.S. Coast Guard did not respond to requests clarifying what considerations were made before the group was flown into the United States. However, the rocky, uninhabited island is routinely monitored by the Coast Guard for strandings of migrants hoping to reach U.S. soil.
Bitter cold causes more flooding concerns along St. Clair River
EAST CHINA, Mich. โ A State of Emergency was declared in Saint Clair County due to the flooding along its titular river -- and ongoing cold weather is expected to bring more ice jams, causing more flooding concerns for residents. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for southeastern Saint Clair County until 10 a.m. Tuesday. State of Emergency declared in St. Clair County due to flood damage
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. โ A State of Emergency was declared in Saint Clair County due to the flooding along its titular river. Ice jams have caused the Saint Clair River to flood significantly. The State of Emergency was declared due to widespread damages to property caused by the flooding. Citizens who are impacted by flooding to their properties are encouraged to utilize the online self-reporting survey to catalogue and report damage. Ice jams cause significant flooding along St. Clair River
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. โ Ice jams along the St. Clair River caused significant flooding in Algonac to Port Huron Tuesday and Wednesday. Pieces of ice collect and dam off the river, causing it to back up. What was uncommon was the typical help used to prevent the St. Clair River from spilling over wasnโt available, causing damage all along the river. Two ice breaking ships -- U.S. Coast Guardโs Bristol Bay and Canadian cutter The Griffon -- have been conducting operations to ease the flooding.

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. โ Ice jams along the St. Clair River have flooded main roads and homes Tuesday from Algonac to Port Huron. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for southeastern St. Clair County until 10 a.m. Wednesday. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two icebreaking ships -- the U.S. Coast Guard Bristol Bay and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon -- have been conducting icebreaking operations to ease the flooding. โGriffon was underway until 8:30 p.m. flushing ice that is contributing to the flooding, and both cutters will resume icebreaking operations at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Bristol Bay, normally homeported in Detroit, is staged in Algonac, Mich. for the overnight hours,โ read a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Freighter aground on Detroit River now freed
DETROIT โ A freighter that ran aground on the Detroit River has been freed Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard tweeted that the the Harvest Spirit has been refloated and will undergo further inspection. The 500-foot freighter Harvest Spirit, aground in the Detroit River since Wednesday morning, was successfully refloated this afternoon and is safely anchored in U.S. waters while awaiting a thorough inspection. Search ends for 2 still missing after Texas port explosion
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas The search for two crew members of a dredging boat who went missing following an explosion last week in the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas has been ended, the U.S. Coast Guard announced. Our Coast Guard crews worked intently alongside state and local partners to locate the two crew members who remained missing, but unfortunately, we were unable to locate them, said Capt. Edward Gaynor, commander, Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi. The decision to suspend a search is never easy and a lot of factors are considered before suspending a search. Port of Corpus Christi officials said it was a propane pipeline.

US, Canadian authorities search Detroit River for missing people after boat capsizes
GROSSE ILE, Mich. Emergency personnel are searching the Detroit River, just south of Stony Island, after a boat capsized Sunday night. According to authorities, the incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Police said a boater from Ontario witnessed the incident and was able to province assistance to most of the passengers, but two adults have gone missing. Police said at least nine people were onboard, consisting of adults and children. The search included Grosse Ile Police and Fire crews, the Wayne County Marine Division, Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard and the Downriver Dive Team. The status of the victims and their names have not been released by authorities.

Paraplegic rower found dead during California-Hawaii voyage
HONOLULU The body of a paraplegic woman rowing from California to Hawaii was headed to Tahiti after she was found lifeless in the water over the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday. A friend of Angela Madsen, 60, contacted the Coast Guard Sunday after not hearing from her for more than 24 hours, Chief Petty Officer Sara Muir said. Madsen, who had been at sea for 59 days, was about 1,145 miles (1,842 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, when she was last heard from, Muir said. According to a website, rowoflife.org, Madesen was a three-time Paralympian and Marine Corps veteran who aimed to be the first paraplegic and oldest woman to row the Pacific Ocean. In 2014, while getting ready to row from California to Hawaii, she said rowing is a venue where partially paralyzed people can excel.
US Coast Guard rescues 10 people from water in Grand Traverse Bay
GRAND TRAVERSE BAY, Mich. The US Coast Guard rescued 10 people from the water in Grand Traverse Bay on Friday. Officials say the people were rescued after their boat starting sinking into the water. At around 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sector Sault Sainte Marie Command Center received a distress radio call from a 30-foot vessel that was taking on water. The crew got on scene within 20 minutes and deployed their rescue swimmer to transfer everyone to a Good Samaritan vessel that had arrived to assist. In the video a a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer can be seen assisting 10 people from a sinking 30-foot vessel to a Good Samaritans vessel in Grand Traverse Bay on Friday.

A large boat struck the seawall guardrail overnight Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019 along the Detroit riverfront. DETROIT โ A large yacht struck the seawall guardrail overnight Tuesday along the Detroit riverfront. The rail was badly damaged along the Riverwalk near the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit. About 30 feet of dock was damaged, Detroit police said. The U.S. Coast Guard did catch up to the boat, named โValara VI,โ a little further up the Detroit River.

Coast Guard finds $1 million in marijuana floating off California
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - U.S. Coast Guard officers found 43 bales of marijuana, worth about $1 million, floating in the ocean near Catalina Island, authorities said in a news release. Law enforcement responded to the area after a caller reported seeing multiple bales of what appeared to be narcotics, the Coast Guard said. Authorities said it's unknown where the marijuana came from, and the case is under investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Coast Guard's investigations team. Anyone who sees suspicious activity in the area was asked to contact the Coast Guard's Los Angeles-Long Beach sector at 310-521-3801. Catalina is a channel island lying about a little over 20 miles south of the Los Angeles County coast.
Coast Guard: 64 people have drowned in Great Lakes so far this year
DETROIT - The U.S. Coast Guard said 64 people have drowned in the Great Lakes between Jan. 1 and July 26. The Coast Guard used the statistic to remind people about the potential dangers present in the lakes, including cold water and rip currents. A map from the Coast Guard shows where people have died on lakes this year. The Coast Guard said failing to do these things has contributed to deaths.
