As summer fades and cooler weather sets in, dermatology experts say now is the time to address the sun damage left behind by months in the pool, on the golf course and at the lake.
Dr. James Bazzi, medical director of Northville Beauty Spa, said a newer laser technology, the Helix CoolPeel, is changing what patients can expect from CO2 laser treatments, long considered the gold standard for skin tightening but notorious for painful, lengthy recoveries.
“Traditional CO2 would deliver a good amount of energy and heat that would get to the surrounding tissue,” Bazzi said, explaining that this creates the injury needed for skin to repair itself. But too much energy reaching surrounding tissue can slow healing.
“With the CoolPeel, we can really focus that. We can customize it to each patient’s approach to what they need for their skin,” Bazzi said, adding that the more targeted approach means less energy is needed overall, and “that can significantly cut down the healing time.”
Bazzi said fall marks the unofficial start of what the spa calls “laser season,” and for good reason.
“Everyone’s out in the summer, whether we’re at the pool, we’re golfing, we’re at the lake, everyone’s outside. And unfortunately, although the sun is great, it does create a lot of injury and damage to the skin,” he said during an appearance on Live in the D.
Because laser treatments typically require avoiding UV exposure for a week or two afterward, timing matters.
“This is the perfect time post-summer to get those issues treated,” Bazzi said.
