DETROIT – With the November election approaching, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson spent her Friday in Detroit, joining forces with hometown artist and entrepreneur Big Sean for a conversation about Michigan’s creative economy.
The discussion centered on investing in the arts, supporting creative entrepreneurs and expanding opportunities for people across the state.
“The department I want to create on arts, culture, tourism, and sports will think strategically on how to build those economies.
How to ensure they are generating wealth for communities around the state. Raising wages is a key part of our campaign, economic growth.
I think this is one of the most significant ways we can diversify our economy and really take advantage of a lot of the untapped talent and resources we have in the city and the state to generate more economic growth in an area that’s quite exciting as well and generate spaces that people want to visit; it helps grow our workforce and keep our talent here. Not just our creative talent, but talent across the board.”

Republican gubernatorial candidate John James also weighed in on how he plans to keep creators and entrepreneurs in Michigan.
A spokesperson said James would do so by “getting government out of the way, keeping costs low, expanding access to reliable infrastructure, protecting people and their creativity online, and making sure the rules are clear, fair, and built for the modern economy.”
