DETROIT -- Northwest’s Adam Haselius and Grass Lake’s Wesley Edie capped off their high school careers with state championships. Manchester’s Sammy Stewart began his high school career with a title. In the Individual State Championships at Ford Field on Saturday, wrestlers from the Jackson area came away with three championships. Three others finished second.

JACKSON – There has been some movement in the latest Jackson-area girls basketball power rankings. East Jackson’s win over Grass Lake last week meant the Trojans and Warriors flip spots this week. Grass Lake did win the previous meeting, but these two teams are pretty close to each other talent-wise, and if they played a best-of-seven series, it is likely going the full seven.

JACKSON, MI -- East Jackson reigned victorious during their Snowfest weekend basketball doubleheader. Both the girls and boys of East Jackson defeated the Grass Lake teams. JACKSON -- The snow has come and for high school athletes around the Jackson area, that means an unexpected day off. Here are some of the games which have been impacted by the storm. JACKSON -- Some games have shaken a few things up in the girls basketball landscape in the Jackson area over the past week. Grass Lake lost to Hanover-Horton, a rare Cascades Conference loss for the Warriors. This might foretell a wild ride in the Cascades this year, as there is now a three-way tie between the Warriors, Napoleon and East Jackson at 4-1 in the conference. Meanwhile that Napoleon team rebounding from its tough loss to Springport by beating Michigan Center.

There’s a reason road games are sometimes tougher for teams and Saline’s girls basketball team found that out on Tuesday. The Hornets traveled to Grass Lake in search of their fourth straight victory but instead were forced to settle for a 48-38 loss to the now-6-4 Warriors.

They’ve played in some bigger high school gyms and even some small-college gyms like Spring Arbor or Olivet. But on Monday, the boys basketball teams from Grass Lake and Homer take things to the big leagues. They will play each other on the NBA floor of Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

GRASS LAKE – A fourth-quarter run by Grass Lake helped the Warriors pick up a 56-44 win over East Jackson on Thursday in a Cascades Conference boys basketball game. The Warriors used a 12-0 run to turn what had been a five-point deficit into a seven point lead and kept pulling away from there.

Monday was the night for Grass Lake’s Brayden Lape. He had two performances in the finale of The Voice.

OLIVET -- A strong start for Leslie set the tone early and the Blackhawks cruised to a 69-31 win over Grass Lake on Saturday at the GLAC/Cascades Challenge at Olivet College’s Cutler Event Center. The Blackhawks (2-0) put together a 16-0 run to answer an opening score by the Warriors, and never trailed again.

The two-part finale of The Voice starts Monday night on local 4, and don't look now, but Brayden Lape from Grass Lake is still in the mix.

Andrea Cabana started her career as Chelsea’s boys basketball head coach with a dominant performance Tuesday night. The former Grass Lake girls state champion coach led the Bulldogs to a 77-52 victory over Parma Western in the season opener.

The Western girls basketball team had losses to Chelsea and Haslett to open the season, but got things back on a winning track on Tuesday, beating Grass Lake 60-45. Rayah Hitt had a huge night for the Panthers with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot. Palmer Fortress had 10 points. Bayli Stewart had eight points, five rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.

A 16-year-old from Grass Lake will appear in the semifinals of “The Voice” on Monday night.

One of Michigan’s own just advance to the semifinals on “The Voice” and he’s stirring up a lot of excitement in his hometown of Grass Lake.

GRASS LAKE, MI – Budget cuts could be coming in Grass Lake after residents turned down a proposed increase to the village’s operating millage in the Nov. 8 election. The village was asking its voters to partially restore its operating millage to 10.5878 mills, starting next year, after it has experienced rising administrative costs, Village Manager Sabrina Edgar said. Related: Grass Lake seeks Headlee override millage to keep up with village operationsHowever, voters turned down the proposal by 108 votes, with 209 voting in favor and 317 voting against. Funds from the millage help Grass Lake perform general operations, including community lighting, hazard mitigation, water and sewer maintenance, Downtown Development Authority funding, village building repairs, technology upgrades and many other services, Edgar said. “It’s not any different than running our own household budget,” Edgar said.

SPRINGPORT -- Hanover-Horton rallied to take the first set, then after a rally fell short in the second, pulled out wins in the third and fourth to beat Grass Lake 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19 on Tuesday in the Division 3 regional semifinal. The Comets will take on Pewamo-Westphalia, a 25-21, 25-16, 25-15 winner over Dansville, in Thursday’s regional title game.

In a rematch of their Week 8 conference game, the Manchester Flying Dutchmen scored with 1:48 left in the game to beat Grass Lake 22-19 on Friday in the district semifinal. Manchester scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and made a goal-line stand to keep Grass Lake off the board to take a 14-0 lead before Andrew Stockton returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left in the half.

Back on October 14, Grass Lake beat Manchester 35-19. The Warriors scored twice in the first quarter, another in the second, took a lead into halftime even after the Flying Dutchmen scored 13 points in the second quarter, then came away with scores in the third and fourth quarter to come out with the win.

HOMER – Long drives for Homer and potentially promising drives which came up short for Grass Lake led the Trojans to a 34-14 win over the Warriors on Friday in the Big 8/Cascades Crossover. Grass Lake was able to move the ball as well but did not find the end zone until the fourth quarter. They play really well.”That Homer defense held the normally potent Grass Lake rushing attack in check. Grass Lake got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. But the deficit was far too big for Grass Lake to overcome.

15-year old Brayden Lape is from Grass Lake, which is between Jackson and Ann Arbor. THE BATTLEIn tonight’s Battle Round, Lape went against a much more experienced performer in 29-year old Benny Weag. “I think you have a beautiful tone. “Brayden, you have a beautiful, beautiful voice. There’s something about that that’s endearing.”THE WINNER ISShelton ended up choosing Brayden as the winner of the battle.

GRASS LAKE -- After Thursday’s 8-0 district win over Jonesville, Grass Lake players circled up for a cool-down, but Warriors coach Andrew Toteff had something he needed to take care of. He pulled out a marker and a small soccer ball, and wrote the date and score on one of the panels. Moments later, while talking to the team, he recapped some of the highlights of the win. Max Goebel had scored twice, Jacob Colesa scored two of his own, Tyler Paul kept a clean sheet in goal. But the Man of the Match was senior Cole Keneau, who had a hat trick before halftime.

GRASS LAKE, MI -- Grass Lake scored on their opening drive and never looked back to roll to a 34-18 Cascades Conference win over Addison. Grass Lake improves to 4-3 on the season while Addison falls to 4-3. Both teams are now 3-2 in conference play.

Western beat Lumen Christi 7-0 on Thursday in Interstate 8 soccer. TennisNorthwest 7, Columbia Central 1: The Mounties picked up a win over the Golden Eagles. The Mounties had 6-0, 6-0 wins from the No. Alex Thrun also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

JACKSON -- It’s Week 4 of the high school football season. In the topsy-turvy world of the Cascades Conference, Napoleon is on top, for now, following the Week 3 win at Manchester, but with the Pirates taking a break from conference play, Grass Lake can join them in first place with a win over Hanover-Horton.

GRASS LAKE, MI -- A car fire destroyed a garage and severely damaged a Grass Lake home Wednesday afternoon, officials said. Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sept. 14, reports came in of a structure fire in the 900 block of S. Union Street in Grass Lake, according to the Grass Lake Fire Department. The fire caused a lot of smoke and heat damage throughout the residence, and the garage and everything in it was destroyed, Jones said. Residents of the home had been working on a car in the connected garage, before the vehicle itself caught on fire, engulfing the garage soon after. Grass Lake was assisted at the scene by the fire departments of Napoleon and Manchester townships, as well as the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.

NAPOLEON -- Early in sets, things were constantly back-and-forth when Napoleon hosted Grass Lake on Tuesday. In fact, in the second and third sets Grass Lake pulled out to early leads. After a roll shot from Grass Lake’s Mia Buttigieg got the Warriors within two points, Napoleon rattled off five of the next six points. She’s such a good person and a great volleyball player.”Facing Napoleon’s strong hitters, Grass Lake had 60 digs as a team. She hits cross a lot, so defensively we had to switch up.”Abby Buttigieg had 19 digs for Grass Lake and went 11-for-11 from the service line.

JACKSON -- Northwest tennis player Mason Schroeder has been voted Athlete of the Week in the Jackson area. Schroeder took more than 92% of the vote to beat Grass Lake volleyball player Olivia Turner and Western cross country runner Cooper Singleton. The Mounties’ No. 1 singles player rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a dual against Harper Creek on September 6.

Izayiah Hawes followed a strong Week 1 with 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Gage Race and JR Morrow also ran for touchdowns as Northwest put up 330 rushing yards as a team. Austin Tingley was 11-for-19 passing for 120 yards for East Jackson, including a touchdown pass to Braedon Desy. Reading 26, Grass Lake 14: Reading rallied to beat Grass Lake in a nonconference game. He hit Mekhi Wingfield with touchdown passes of 53, 53 and 27 yards, and found Logan Lamb for a 38-yard touchdown pass and a 15-yard touchdown pass.

GRASS LAKE -- Speed and experience could be the hallmarks of a tough defense at Grass Lake this year. That could mean a step forward for a Warriors defense which last year had a game against East Jackson where it allowed just six points before allowing 15 against Napoleon and 13 against Manchester.

Matchups have been set for December’s GLAC/Cascades Challenge. The series will pit girls and boys basketball teams from each conference against each other at Olivet College, with the girls games played December 2-3 and the boys games December 9-10. The girls series will tip off at 5:30 p.m. December 2 with Michigan Center facing Lakewood. Leslie will play Grass Lake in a battle of 2022 district champions and future conference rivals at 7 p.m. The December 3 slate of games tips off with Hanover-Horton facing Perry at 10 a.m. Napoleon will play Lansing Christian at 11:30 a.m., East Jackson will face Stockbridge at 1 p.m. and Manchester will take on Olivet at 2:30 p.m.

The Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association and Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association released their all-state teams this week, with several Jackson-area players receiving honors. In Division 2, Northwest ace Nevaeh Ingram was one of seven pitchers recognized as an all-state first-team player. In Division 3, Grass Lake outfielder Emily Brown, thirdbaseman Olivia Turner and shortstop Emily Guthrie were named first-team all-state, as was Napoleon secondbaseman Elisse Omey. The Division 3 honorable mentions include Napoleon pitcher Raye Burke, Jonesville pitcher Maddelyn Lee, Grass Lake catcher Bre Salts and Grass Lake firstbaseman Katelyn Postuma. Millington won its second state title in four seasons, capping the season as the No. 1-ranked team in Division 3 with a 3-2, eight-inning win over Evart Saturday at Michigan State University. Fessler, who will play at Detroit-Mercy, earned a spot as the all-state catcher, as determined by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. She was joined by pitcher Ashley Ziel, who earned the state title win in her final high school game before leaving to play for Northwood University. Grass Lake’s Laney Brown has been selected as Athlete of the Week in the Jackson area for the week of June 4-11. In a close vote, Brown captured 35.62% of the vote to edge Northwest softball pitcher Nevaeh Ingram who took 32.57%. Hanover-Horton golfer Brady Applegate took 13.84% of the vote to place third. Brown went 7-for-7 in regional wins over Dundee and Jonesville and drove in five runs.

Grass Lake saw its softball season come to a close in Tuesday’s Division 3 quarterfinal at Adrian College with a 5-4 loss to Algonac as the Muskrats jumped ahead thanks to a two-run seventh. Algonac’s Deanna Delange hit a two-out, two-run double to sink the Warriors. Grass Lake had the winning run on base in the bottom of the seventh before a groundout ended it. The Muskrats loaded the bases again in the fifth before Brianna Thomason hit a two-out, two-run double to get Algonac within a run. That tie didn’t last long as Turner led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to make it 4-3 Grass Lake.

Dundee gave up five unearned runs in the first inning and fell 6-0 to Grass Lake in the semifinals of the Division 3 Regional at Sand Creek.

Grass Lake has won the Cascades Conference Burdette Andrews All-Sports Award for the second year in a row. The award is presented to the Cascades Conference school which has the best overall finish in each sport sponsored by the conference over the course of the school year. The Warriors won conference titles in girls cross country, girls basketball, boys and girls bowling and softball, as well as the conference regular-season title in baseball.

Tyler Bartimore, 17, has been missing for a year and was last seen in Grass Lake, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

JACKSON – State champions have been crowned in track, and of course congratulations to East Jackson hurdler Brynn Mericle for bringing home a state title in the 100 hurdles over the weekend. JACKSON – We have come to the end of the track season, and between state meets, the Selby Classic at East Jackson and the Hillsdale County meet at Hillsdale College, there were plenty of rewrites to the leaderboard in the final week.
