Metro Detroit weather: One more cold day
I hope you had a great Christmas and end-of-Hanukkah weekend! We are starting off our Monday – the first day of Kwanzaa – on a quiet note relative to where we’ve been the past three days. A weakening storm system will pass well to our south today, but it may be close enough to give us a few flakes. I don’t expect any accumulation, with cloudy skies dominating the day. Highs should reach 20 degrees (-7 degrees Celsius) or so, but the wind will only blow from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph, so wind chill won’t be nearly the issue that it was over the weekend. That means a pretty uneventful trip to the store to exchange all of those clothes you received that don’t fit, or take advantage of the post-holiday sales.

KALAMAZOO, MI — A celebration of bringing light into darkness, Hanukkah begins on Sunday, Dec. 18. As has been the case for the last decade-plus, Kalamazoo’s three congregations will come together to light a hanukkiah in Bronson Park each night of the eight-day celebration, from Dec. 18-25. In many places, the public lighting is simply one group represented. The hanukkiah, often referred to as a menorah, is placed in the downtown park each year by The Jewish Federation of Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan. “The Jewish community has been a part of Kalamazoo for over 150 years,” said Jacob Weintraub, president of the Jewish Federation of Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan, which hosts the community lighting in the park.

Watchdog reports record number of anti-Semitic incidents in U.S. last year
(Reuters) - Jews in the United States suffered the largest number of anti-Semitic incidents last year since the Anti-Defamation League began collecting records 40 years ago, the racism watchdog said on Tuesday. Previously, the highest number was recorded in 1994, when the ADL reported multiple unsolved arsons, cross burnings and a drive-by shooting. The groups audit of anti-Semitic incidents from 2019 counted 1,127 cases of harassment, 61 cases of physical assaults and 919 instances of vandalism. In recent weeks the ADL has issued warnings of a continuing surge in incidents, saying conspiracy theories connected to the coronavirus outbreak could worsen anti-Semitism in the United States.
