mlive.comTigers’ Matthew Boyd is back -- and he’s even calling some of his own pitches
LAKELAND, Fla. -- When Matthew Boyd knows exactly what he pitch he wants to throw, sometimes it helps to cut to the chase. Boyd became the first Detroit Tigers pitcher to wear a PitchCom device on his belt and call his own pitches from the mound on Thursday. But there were certain moments in which Boyd said the ability to call his own pitch was helpful. The pitch clock was still just an idea. With the pitch clock, PitchCom is no longer optional.
mlive.comTigers’ takeaways from Sunday: One ugly inning doesn’t spoil other positives
Newcomers Nick Maton and Matt Vierling hit their first home runs as Tigers. “They both rely on stuff and they both have secondary pitches in and out of the zone,” Hinch said. mlive.comWho will win Tigers’ 3 biggest roster battles of spring training?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- There are seasons in which spring roster battles are largely manufactured, a way to keep everyone engaged during the long days in the sun. “We’re going to learn a lot about our players and there’s going to be a lot of competition in camp. The most serious contenders (10): Brendon Davis, Cesar Hernandez, Andy Ibañez, Ryan Kreidler, Tyler Nevin, Jermaine Palacios, Zack Short, Akil Baddoo, Kerry Carpenter, Jonathan Davis. The most serious contenders (3): Andrew Knapp, Jake Rogers, Donny Sands. To arrive at the “serious contenders,” I whacked three non-roster invitees who haven’t pitched above Double-A.
mlive.comWill Tigers lose 100 games in 2023? New PECOTA projection offers grim outlook.
The grim reality is that PECOTA, the widely respected and widely cited projection system from Baseball Prospectus, thinks the Tigers will lose nearly 100 games in 2023. Even so, PECOTA really likes Eric Haase (98 DRC+), whose offensive production would be very solid for a catcher. The Tigers’ rotation really doesn’t look that bad, with veteran lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (96 DRA-) headlining a group that includes Boyd (100 DRA-), Lorenzen (100 DRA-), Spencer Turnbull (104 DRA-) and Matt Manning (115 DRA-). The Tigers did lose four key relievers from a very strong bullpen in 2023, and PECOTA likes all of them to continue to pitch well in 2023. PECOTA likes the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians (both 88-74) to fight for the division crown, with the Chicago White Sox (78-84) a distant third.
mlive.comTigers’ Jake Rogers hopes to recapture pre-injury magic of 2021
LAKELAND, Fla. -- When catcher Jake Rogers made his 2021 debut on May 8, the Detroit Tigers were 9-24 and had lost 18 of their last 21 games. No one is saying that Rogers’ arrival alone was the impetus for the Tigers’ temporary revival. “A big part of playing better baseball is being a good teammate and having that good team camaraderie. Rogers, who turns 28 in April, is the Tigers’ last chance of salvaging the ill-fated Justin Verlander trade of 2017. What was it (that caused the injury)?’ I’m not sure.
mlive.comOn sunny day in Lakeland, Tigers take first steps in 2023 season
LAKELAND, Fla. -- There were dozens of players practicing on the backfields of the Detroit Tigers spring complex on Monday morning, although only one player was actually obligated to be there. It was a breezy and sunny 68-degree day in Lakeland. Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Casey Mize takes a break between running sprints during a workout on Feb. 13, 2023. “I’m just going to have fun, use my abilities and play the game like I know how to play,” Baddoo said Monday. That’s all I’m going to do.
mlive.comTigers sign veteran catcher to minor-league deal
The Detroit Tigers haven’t pursued any high-profile free-agent catchers, but they continue to stock up on depth at the position. The latest catcher to add to the list of potential competitors this spring is veteran switch-hitter Andrew Knapp. His signing to a minor-league deal was first reported by Complete Baseball News on Tuesday. As of today, Eric Haase would be the Tigers’ starting catcher, with Jake Rogers as the frontrunner for the No. The Tigers could still sign a catcher to a big-league deal, of course, but the list of potential options has nearly evaporated.
mlive.comWill Tigers sign a catcher or stand pat this winter?
SAN DIEGO -- It’s been taken as a given for much of the winter that the Detroit Tigers would pursue a catcher, whether it be a cheap one-year option or a more substantial investment. And on Monday at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, he expressed satisfaction with the two catchers currently on the Tigers’ 40-man roster: Eric Haase and Jake Rogers. Harris didn’t commit to the idea of Haase being the No. Harris said Monday that playing time would be “earmarked” for young players, suggesting he was unlikely to sign retreads who would block the Tigers’ young players. Once the catching market starts to move, we’ll get a better idea of where the Tigers stand.
mlive.comFormer Tigers outfielder waived, outrighted by Orioles
Outfielder Daz Cameron was waived this week by the Baltimore Orioles, three weeks after being claimed from the Detroit Tigers. This time, Cameron cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk. Cameron, who turns 26 in January, hit .201 with five homers and nine stolen bases in 73 games with the Tigers over parts of three seasons. He made his Major League debut in the COVID-shortened 2020 season but never played well enough in Detroit to get an extended look. The Orioles still might think so, although he is no longer on the 40-man roster and will have to be re-selected if he makes the team in spring training.
mlive.comTigers cut 6 players, including longtime outfielder
LAS VEGAS -- The Detroit Tigers waived six more players, including longtime outfielder Victor Reyes, to pare down their roster by Thursday’s deadline. Right-handed pitchers Luis Castillo, Bryan Garcia and Elvin Rodriguez; infielders Jermaine Palacios and Luis Garcia; and Reyes all cleared waivers and were outrighted. The moves were made to create roster space for the reinstatement of 10 players who ended the season on the 60-day injured list. mlive.comTigers’ injury updates on Matt Manning, Kyle Funkhouser, 10 others
LAS VEGAS -- Detroit Tigers right-hander Matt Manning ended the 2022 season on the injured list and under a cloud of uncertainty, with an offseason doctor’s visit pending. The Tigers said Tuesday that Manning is symptom-free and doing his normal offseason throwing program. Catcher Jake Rogers, who underwent Tommy John surgery 14 months ago, is throwing at 60 feet. Other injury updates for pitchers:* Right-hander Spencer Turnbull, who underwent Tommy John surgery 15 months ago, is “symptom-free and performing his normal off-season throwing progression.” Turnbull is expected to be in the Tigers’ rotation in 2023. * Right-handed pitcher Casey Mize, who underwent Tommy John surgery about five months ago, “is progressing into the strength phase of his rehab,” the team said.
mlive.comTigers’ Zack Short about to get some ABs for first time in 2022
Short was in the starting lineup at second base for the Tigers’ series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night at Comerica Park. “His opportunities have been minimal and he’s going to try to take advantage of it now.”Short can play second, third and ... short. The Tigers made the decision to put Schoop on the IL on Monday because his ankle had swelled so dramatically. More updatesHinch said it’s no longer “probable” that Tigers catcher Jake Rogers (Tommy John surgery) return in 2022. Tigers outfielder Austin Meadows (heel soreness) is doing his rehab work in the early afternoon at Comerica Park rather than before the game.
mlive.comNew Tigers injury updates, including 3 pitchers who won’t be back in 2022
DETROIT -- Three pitchers won’t return to pitch for the Detroit Tigers in 2022. Additionally, right-hander Spencer Turnbull, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, won’t return to pitch this season. Hinch said the aggressive timeline required for Turnbull to make a couple of starts in September wouldn’t be worth it. Among other Tigers with long-term injuries, the prognosis is brighter for catcher Jake Rogers to return if only briefly before the end of the year. That would put him in line to rejoin the team at some point next week.
mlive.comTigers’ Tyler Alexander is back -- and so is his mustache
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander is back after a six-week stint on the injured list. “When things go wrong, grow the mustache,” Alexander said with a smile. After some deliberation, the Tigers decided to keep Alexander in the bullpen upon his return. He worked out with Tigers catcher Jake Rogers, who is missing this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The Tigers optioned outfielder Derek Hill to Toledo to make room for Alexander.

mlive.comTigers invite 17 non-roster players to spring training
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers have invited 17 non-roster players to join their big-league crew when spring training officially opens Monday at the club’s Tiger Town facility. As expected, that includes top prospects Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson, who will compete for jobs on the Opening Day roster this spring. All players, except those coming from outside the country who might have visa issues, are expected to report to camp on Sunday. Two players -- right-handed pitcher Spencer Turnbull and catcher Jake Rogers -- are expected to miss all or most of the 2022 season with injury. mlive.comTigers add young prospect to 40-man roster, make several other moves Sunday
More than four years after he was acquired in a nearly-forgotten trade, right-handed pitcher Elvin Rodriguez is finally joining the Detroit Tigers’ 40-man roster. The Tigers now have 40 players on the 40-man roster, although there could be other moves in the weeks ahead. He could join a rotation in Triple-A Toledo that includes Rony Garcia, Alex Faedo and Joey Wentz. They can’t be returned to the 60-day injured list and removed from the 40-man roster until the first day of spring training in February. mlive.comTigers ‘elated’ to get top target at catcher on Day 1 of offseason
The Detroit Tigers were poised to pursue the best catcher on the free-agent market. That was how the club landed veteran catcher Tucker Barnhart on Wednesday, the first day of the Major League offseason. The Tigers have their catcher and they got him at a bargain price. “We were so excited -- elated, really -- to be able to acquire Tucker so quickly in the hot-stove season,” said Tigers general manager Al Avila. “I think the best version of Tucker Barnhart on the baseball field is now and in the future,” he said.
mlive.comTigers winter roster decisions: Who’s back? Who’s on the bubble? Who’s out?
DETROIT -- The offseason officially begins after the conclusion of the World Series, but it’s likely the Detroit Tigers -- and other clubs -- will begin their winter roster pruning before that. Some of the decisions will be easy, like dropping players who were used as stopgap roster fill-ins throughout the summer. Detroit Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez (77) points in the air toward a pop-up during their MLB game against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park in Detroit, on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Detroit Tigers catcher Grayson Greiner looks on during their Summer Training 2020 at Comerica Park in Detroit, on Friday, July 3, 2020. Catcher Jake Rogers and right-hander Spencer Turnbull will spend the 2022 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.
mlive.comHow do injuries to Jake Rogers, Matthew Boyd impact Tigers’ 2022 plans?
Catcher Jake Rogers underwent Tommy John surgery to repair his right elbow and will almost certainly miss the entire 2022 season. The loss of Rogers, and the potential loss of Boyd, could add two more items to the growing list of Tigers’ offseason needs. Boyd was the Tigers’ Opening Day starter in April and got off to an excellent start this season before succumbing to injuries. (Mike Mulholland | MLive.com)Mike Mulholland | MLive.comNo one dares use those two words -- Tommy John -- just yet. There’s no debate about that, and Salvador Perez is currently offering ample evidence that catchers can and do come back better than ever from Tommy John surgery.
mlive.comTigers catcher Jake Rogers undergoes Tommy John surgery
Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss all or nearly all of the 2022 season, manager A.J. With Rogers out, Eric Haase has served as the Tigers’ primary catcher. Looking ahead to 2022, the absence of Rogers could prompt the Tigers to seek another catcher on the trade or free-agent market. Although it’s unusual for catchers to undergo Tommy John surgery, it isn’t unprecedented. “I can’t comment on his surgery and I have no idea how it went, but he went through Tommy John and came back and is having a historical season,” Hinch said.
mlive.comTigers trade for veteran catcher, add him to roster just before game time
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have acquired veteran catcher Dustin Garneau to help plug their temporary shortage of catching depth. The Tigers sent cash considerations to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Garneau, 34, who was playing in Triple-A Albuquerque. To create roster spots for Garneau, outfielder Jacob Robson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo and catcher Jake Rogers was transferred to the 60-day injured list. In other moves on Wednesday, the Tigers activated infielder Isaac Paredes from the injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Toledo. TIGERS’ 40-MAN ROSTER (40)Players in bold are on the 26-man active roster.
mlive.comTigers catcher Jake Rogers will be out longer than originally thought
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers will miss significant time with a right forearm strain, manager A.J. Originally it was hoped that Rogers might only be out for a couple of weeks. Rogers was placed on the injured list on Monday after experiencing discomfort in his arm prior to the game. Rogers, 26, has been one of the most pleasant developments for the Tigers in 2021. He’s also played elite defense behind the plate while helping manage the Tigers’ young pitching staff.
mlive.comTigers’ Jake Rogers out 2-3 weeks with forearm strain
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers is likely to miss two or three weeks with a strain in his right forearm, manager A.J. Rogers, 26, has been one of the most pleasant developments for the Tigers in 2021. Hinch said Rogers complained of arm discomfort before the game and subsequent tests revealed a pronator teres strain. “We hope it’s going to be resolved in the next couple of weeks,” Hinch said. Tigers infielder Isaac Paredes was lifted for a pinch-runner after hurting his hip while rounding a base.
mlive.comTigers place catcher on injured list just before game time
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers was placed on the injured list just minutes before game time on Monday after suffering a right arm injury. The Tigers recalled catcher Grayson Greiner from Triple-A Toledo. Greiner, 28, began the season on the Tigers’ roster but suffered a hamstring injury in May and then lost his job when Rogers and Haase emerged as better options. mlive.comTigers’ midseason report card: Jonathan Schoop, 4 others have earned an A
The Tigers’ strikeout rate (27.2 percent) is still the highest in baseball, as it was in 2019 and 2020. But the Tigers’ walk-rate (8.9 percent) is now 14th-best in baseball, a dramatic improvement over the last two seasons. Grossman (381 PA, .226 BA/.354 OBP/.394 SLG, 111 OPS+, 12 HR, 11 SB, 1.5 bWAR, 1.2 fWAR) has been exactly as advertised. He may be almost singlehandedly responsible for the Tigers’ improved walk rate and he’s been a steady everyday player in the outfield. B: Jeimer CandelarioCandelario (344 PA, .262 BA/.346 OBP/.377 SLG, 104 OPS+, 5 HR, 1.4 bWAR, 1.0 fWAR) has been a steady presence in the Tigers’ lineup.
mlive.comThe Tigers’ first half ended with a thud. Here are 3 ways to finish 2021 strong.
Instead, let’s take a look at some long-term outcomes:* The Tigers are 40-51, on pace for a 71-91 record in 2021. * To finish with a .500 record would require an 41-30 finish, a goal which is not totally implausible, but would be very, very difficult. That would count as a good finish and a good year. In his last 10 starts, Ureña has 21 walks, 22 strikeouts, 11 home runs and an 8.92 ERA in 41 1/3 innings. It could good for Ureña and good for the Tigers.
mlive.comTigers hit grand slam in 9th but still swept by Twins in frustrating first-half finale
The Tigers lost leads in three of four games and went 0-4 despite outscoring the Twins 10-2 in the first five innings this weekend. The Twins battered the Tigers’ bullpen, took advantage of miscues and outscored Detroit an incredible 24-4 in innings six, seven and eight. The Tigers were held hitless through 4 2/3 innings by Twins starter Jose Berrios, but mounted a two-out rally in the fifth inning. (Daniel Norris escaped a bases-loaded jam to preserve the Tigers’ lead). Tigers starter Wily Peralta allowed one run in five innings, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run dating to June 19.

Top prospects Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene will represent the Detroit Tigers at the All-Star Futures Game in Denver on July 11. The futures game is a seven-inning exhibition that takes place as part of the week’s All-Star festivities. Rogers made his MLB debut later in 2019, Paredes came to the big leagues in 2020 and Manning debuted this month. Torkelson and Greene are rated the Tigers’ first- and second-best prospects, respectively, by MLB Pipeline. The full roster for the futures game is here.
mlive.comFor first time in 100 years, Tigers used 2 position players to pitch in same game
DETROIT -- History was made when Harold Castro took the mound in the ninth inning of the Detroit Tigers’ 15-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. It was the first time since Sept. 2, 1918, in which the Tigers had used two position players in the same game, according to Sportradar. Ty Cobb and Bobby Veach did it more than 100 years ago, also against the Chicago White Sox. Rogers allowed a couple of runs, but kept the game moving in the eighth. Because Rogers is scheduled to catch on Sunday, Hinch didn’t want him to use him for a second inning.
mlive.comTigers pitching melts down in 15-2 loss to White Sox
DETROIT -- After all the good vibes surrounding the Detroit Tigers’ recent improvements, Saturday was a buzzkill. The Chicago White Sox thrashed the Tigers 15-2 on Saturday at Comerica Park. The first-place White Sox (40-24) have taken seven of nine from the Tigers (26-38) this season and will go for the series sweep on Sunday. mlive.comThe Tigers didn’t give up on Jake Rogers, and now he’s showing why.
That’s why giving up on Jake Rogers was never really a consideration, even after he struggled in 2019 and was passed over from promotion in 2020. In Rogers’ rookie year, offensive struggles bled into his defense, causing him to make some uncharacteristically sloppy mistakes. Rogers’ promotion to the big leagues roughly coincided with the promotion of fellow catcher and occasional left fielder Eric Haase. The Tigers have gone 17-13 since Rogers’ arrival and 15-12 since Haase joined him. “I love the story as it is right now, and it’ll get better if he can continue this,” Hinch said of Rogers.

mlive.comTigers mailbag: Have 2 new catchers helped spark team’s surge?
But it hasn’t escaped notice that a significant change at one position has roughly coincided with the Tigers’ late-May hot streak. Q: Do Haase and Rogers really represent that big of an upgrade over Ramos and Greiner? Ultimately I think Ramos can still be useful as a designated hitter, pinch-hitter and, yes, a backup or third catcher. Q: Who will the Tigers use later in the summer when Mize and Skubal hit their innings limits? The Tigers haven’t given a specific number, but Mize is currently on pace for 180 innings in a 162-game season.
mlive.comA.J. Hinch glad 3-ball walk didn’t come back to bite Tigers: ‘I wouldn’t have slept last night’
Hinch didn’t realize until after Friday night’s game that New York Yankees batter Gio Urshela had mistakenly been issued a free pass in the sixth inning after only three balls had been thrown. “That’s obviously our fault on the bench,” Hinch said. “It’s embarrassing.”Tigers reliever Kyle Funkhouser was facing Urshela with one out in the sixth inning of a 1-1 game. “I didn’t know about it until after the game,” Hinch said. “If that run had scored, I wouldn’t have slept last night,” Hinch said.
mlive.comYes, Gio Urshela really did draw a walk on 3 balls Friday night vs. Tigers
The play ultimately had no bearing on the inning or the game, so it will go down as a mere curiosity. Detroit Tigers reliever Kyle Funkhouser retired the first batter of the inning before facing Urshela in a 1-1 game. And no one appeared to question him: Not the umpire, not Funkhouser, not anyone in the Tigers’ dugout. “It was a missed count. He went to first on three balls,” Meals said.
