MATT MADDOCK

Michigan House GOP leader optimistic this legislative term won’t repeat past mistakes

When Michigan’s legislature reconvenes Jan. 11, House Minority Leader Matt Hall says it will already start off with something the prior legislature – especially toward the end of the term – lacked between its leaders: Regular communication. At that time, Republican Kevin Elsenheimer occupied the same role as Hall while Democrat Andy Dillon served as House speaker. It’ll also be the first time in roughly four decades that Democrats have held both legislative chambers and the governorship simultaneously. Hall seemed optimistic his and Tate’s relationship could continue so long as neither kotowed to what he saw as the more extreme members of their parties. Maddock, husband of Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock, was booted from the House GOP caucus in early 2022 after allegedly violating its confidentiality rules.

Trump candidates for Michigan Legislature go 6-0. But they were never likely to lose.

Carra, however, was the only one to earn the endorsement while attempting to primary outgoing-U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph. Carra, at the time, was not living in Upton’s district though Huizenga was, setting up a natural contest between the two congressional Republicans. Another candidate – Jon Rocha, who ran in Michigan’s 87th House district – was disqualified from the ballot prior to the primary. He added that Trump also has a history of backing candidates only after they appear to be on the winning side of their contests, and that these state House and Senate candidates are no exception. It’s how do you put together enough of a coalition that you get more than 50% of the vote?

A look at Michigan’s big role in Jan. 6 hearings

Michigan will likely have a leading role in tonight’s prime time hearing as the state has been consistently at the center of all of this, from the stop the count mob at the TCF Center to false claims of voter fraud to false electors and capitol rioters. All it points to Michigan likely making up a big part of these hearings.

Trump-endorsed state Rep. Matt Maddock booted from Michigan House GOP caucus

LANSING, MI – State Rep. Matt Maddock, a loyalist to former president Donald Trump and husband of Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock, was removed from the House GOP caucus on Tuesday. Maddock’s ouster from the caucus means he can no longer meet with GOP caucus members behind closed doors, to discuss policy and upcoming floor votes. By Tuesday evening, Maddock’s profile was removed from both the Michigan House of Representatives website and the House Republicans website. The last time the House Republican caucus removed one of its members was in 2019, when the caucus voted out state Rep. Larry Inman. Years earlier, in 2015, state Rep. Cindy Gamrat, R-Plainwell, was booted from the House Republican caucus for breaking caucus confidentiality rules by posting a comment on Facebook during an off-campus budget workshop.

Michigan Democrats want investigation into state’s ties to US Capitol riot

Michigan’s top legislative Democrats said Thursday they want an investigation into the state’s connections to the Jan. 6 riots that occurred at the U.S. Capitol. They also pointed to the participation of Michigan residents in “stop the steal” rallies in Washington, D.C. in the lead up to the riots. A group of Republican state lawmakers failed to escort 16 GOP electors into the Michigan Capitol building in an attempt to send “alternates” if Michigan’s Democratic electors were somehow rejected. Michigan’s connections to the Jan. 6 riot were partially examined during former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial earlier this year. Impeachment managers also argued the former president inflamed supporters when he told them to “Liberate Michigan” and persistently attacked Whitmer’s COVID-19 policies.

‘This is clearly unconstitutional’ -- Michigan Rep. known for misinformation introduces bill that targets fact checkers

State Rep. Matthew Maddock is no stranger to conspiracy theories and lies about both the election and pandemic.

Michigan Republican wants to register fact-checkers

A Michigan Republican known for challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election has turned his attention to those who fact-check the claims of public officials. State Rep. Matt Maddock this week introduced the “Fact Checker Registration Act," which would force journalists and others who perform fact checks to register with the state and insure themselves with a $1 million fidelity bond. The proposal, which critics argue would violate First Amendment protections for the press and free speech, appears unlikely to be a priority, even in a legislature controlled by his fellow Republicans.

Michigan House bill would create state registry for ‘fact checkers’

A Michigan House Republican who has frequently questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election is backing legislation that would create a state registry of “fact checkers.”The legislation, House Bill 4813, is sponsored by Rep. Matt Maddock, R-Milford. Under the legislation, fact checkers would have to register with the Secretary of State and file proof of a $1 million fidelity bond. Civil actions could be filed against the fact checkers, and any violations could result in fines of at least $1,000 per day for as long as the violation continued. “My legislation will put Fact Checkers on notice: don’t be wrong, don’t be sloppy, and you better be right,” the post read. The prospect of registering fact checking organizations with the state could also have First Amendment implications, she said.

State lawmakers who supported overturning election shouldn’t be seated, Michigan House’s top Democrat says

After a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol while members of Congress were meeting to confirm the votes of the Electoral College, Michigan Democrats are calling on Republican legislative leaders to sanction the state lawmakers who supported overturning the nation’s election results. Meshawn Maddock, who is poised to become co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party, posted photos and videos from pro-Trump events in Washington, D.C. on social media this week. There has been no evidence of widespread election fraud that would have changed the results in Michigan or any other state. Presence at US Capitol ahead of riot not likely to affect prospective Michigan GOP co-chair’s candidacy

She and her husband, state Rep. Matt Maddock, R-Milford Twp., joined protesters in Washington D.C. on Jan. 6. “The Speaker hasn’t seen any action that rises” to the level of discipline, said Lynn Afendoulis, former Republican state representative and current House Republican press secretary. LANSING, Mich. – Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield on Wednesday slapped down calls by some Republican lawmakers for Gov. Democrats have argued that 46 days after the Michigan Supreme Court ruling, House and Senate leaders have yet to offer a comprehensive public health plan to ease the spread of the virus as it surges in Michigan.

Michigan bill could make driver lines shorter, save money

Michigan drivers would no longer need a hard copy of a vehicles registration or an annual sticker on license plates under pending legislation. The bill's sponsor testified in a state House Transportation Committee this past week that the change would shorten lines at secretary of state branches and save the state money. The Department of State estimates in the bills analysis that the state could save $500,000 by eliminating the physical requirements of registration. Michigan State Police legislative liaison Sgt. Department of State spokesman Matt Levin said the department opposes allowing financial institutions to provide secretary of state services.
