Scientists are concerned about insect populations declining due to factors such as loss of habitat, pesticide use and climate change.

Chicagoans are leaving their lawns unmowed in May for the sake of pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies, some of which are in steep decline. About 5000 people nationwide are participating in No Mow May, which started in Appleton, Wisconsin in 2020.

Do you want to help save the bees? There are things you can do to your lawn to make it better for pollinators.

This week the city of Royal Oak decided to jump on board a movement called No Mow May. People are encouraged not to mow their lawns all May to help bees and other pollinators better transition into spring and summer.

“No Mow May” encourages residents to not cut their grass until May 31 in order to promote local populations of pollinators and other environmentally helpful creatures.
