More baby formula recalled as FDA investigates children’s illnesses, two deaths
Five illnesses tied to the possible contamination of the powdered baby formulas have been reported, with two of those illnesses resulting in death, the FDA reports. Four of the illnesses were caused by a Cronobacter sakazakii infection and one was caused by a Salmonella Newport infection. The most recent case now adds specialty formula Similac PM 60/40 with lot codes 27032K80 (can) and 27032K800 (case) to the recall. Samples of products tested at the facility by the FDA have produced several positive Cronobacter sakazakii results, according to the FDA. A Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe illnesses such as sepsis or meningitis which can result in death.
