DETROIT – Metro Detroit was forecast to experience dangerously cold conditions this week as a blast of arctic air moves through the region.

Both a wind chill warning and wind chill advisory were in place Monday morning for different Southeast Michigan counties. Wind chills were making subzero temps feel even colder in the region -- and those feels-like temperatures were expected to remain cold all week.

Oakland County law enforcement said a homeless person died Sunday, Jan. 14, from hypothermia amid the freezing conditions. If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness and is struggling to keep warm, there are warming centers that can help.

Across Metro Detroit, counties provide indoor spaces where people can get and stay warm for free. These warming centers can often be found at community centers, churches, fire stations, and the like.

Experts are urging people to stay inside as much as possible while the temperatures are so low. If venturing outdoors, be sure to dress warm and cover all exposed skin. Dangerously cold wind chills ranging from -15 to -25 degrees could cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
