Resident advisors end strike, reach deal with University of Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Resident advisors at the University of Michigan have ended their nearly two-week strike after reaching a deal with the university. Residential Staff members demanded more protections including regular access to testing for all residence staff, and enforcement of the university mask and social distancing mandates in dining and residence halls. We’d like to thank everyone that supported us during our strike, especially GEO, AFT, our regents, our LT, & everyone on campus that supported us. GEO members had been on strike since Tuesday, Sept. 8 calling on university leadership to ensure better protections from COVID-19 on campus. That strike ended on Thursday, Sept. 17 after a vote from GEO members the previous evening.
University of Michigan graduate students accept school’s latest offer, end strike
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Members of the Graduate Employee’s Organization (GEO) voted Wednesday to accept the University of Michigan’s latest offer regarding issues of mutual concern and end their strike. The university and GEO union announced the strike end Thursday morning. “GEO said its members would return to their duties beginning this morning,” reads a statement from the university. At our largest general membership meeting to date, 1,074 GEO members voted to accept the university’s offer, 239 members voted to reject, and 66 abstained. GEO members and supporters now return to our regular work duties.

Addressing the U-M’s claim that some demands are not bargaining items, GEO member Sasha Bishop went over each of GEO’s anti-policing demands. Bishop elaborated on why the student unions' demands address the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Undergraduates protest, march in support of striking University of Michigan students
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On Friday, undergraduate students at the University of Michigan voiced support for graduate students and resident advisors on strike through a solidarity protest and march. More than 250 undergraduates and members of Students Demand Representation, a U-M student activist organization, listened to speeches given from the steps of the Michigan Union about labor unions and the safety of university workers. After the speeches, undergraduate students marched through downtown Ann Arbor and across campus to join those on strike and to support U-M Dining employees who staged a walkout last week. On Monday afternoon, University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel said through video that the university has taken legal action against the strike. According to University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald, the move includes a “temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the union strike.”More University of Michigan strike coverage:
University of Michigan graduate students continue strike after rejecting university’s offer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Graduate student instructors at the University of Michigan will continue their strike after rejecting an initial offer from the Ann Arbor university. A proposal by the university to end the strike was supported by GEO leadership, but members ultimately rejected the university’s offer saying that it did not meet their demands. “Membership decided by an overwhelming majority that the university’s offer did not constitute continued progress on these demands,” the release states. GEO members have been on strike since Tuesday, Sept. 8, protesting the university’s return to in-person learning. On Thursday, the university released a more detailed response to GEO’s demands after its offer was rejected.
Artist hides artwork around Ann Arbor area for scavenger hunts
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Flamework glass artist Shawn Bungo is hiding artwork around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti for community members to find. Through finders keepers-styled scavenger hunts, Bungo has been secretively hiding small pieces of his art around the two cities on Saturdays for passersby to find and keep. [Its] other neighbors meeting other neighbors through finding the glass.As he has explored the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area, he has spontaneously left small pieces of artwork around. After posting about the pieces in an Ann Arbor Facebook group, more and more people have become interested in participating. Bungo started the Saturday scavenger hunts as a creative way to connect to the community and to get to know people.

University of Michigan steps up COVID-19 testing to 3,000 weekly tests with new program
ANN ARBOR, Mich. The University of Michigan is ramping up its coronavirus (COVID-19) testing with plans to reach 3,000 weekly tests by the end of September. Students, faculty and staff at the Ann Arbor campus can receive tests as part of the voluntary, free and opt-in surveillance U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking Program. Martin is guiding development for the Community Sampling and Tracking Program. U-M community members with COVID-19 symptoms or individuals in close contact with someone with a positive COVID-19 test will not be tested. Students, staff and faculty who have previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 should not enroll in the U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking Program.
New Ann Arbor mural celebrates city culture, University of Michigan student life
ANN ARBOR, Mich. A new mural in downtown Ann Arbor is celebrating the convergence of college life and Ann Arbor culture. Located behind Potbelly Sandwich Shop on the corner of Liberty and State streets, the 15-foot mural creates a head-turning three-dimensional illusion while depicting iconic Ann Arbor landmarks and buildings. Commissioned by building owner Oxford Companies and created by Dearborn-based Mathew Sharum, the mural shows the vibrancy of the city and the excitement of student life. One side of the mural shows images of student life, like graduation, University of Michigan buildings and a hoard of charging athletes. The mural joins the citys exciting public art scene and faces a mural created by Ann Arbors own TreeTown Murals.
Couple makes From Burns to Belize report after visiting over 100 Ann Arbor parks
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Maya Goldman and Ben Ratner spent almost 3 months visiting 148 of Ann Arbors parks. And its this gorgeous field, like rolling hills and a border of trees, so we were really taken by that park, Goldman said. Through their report, Goldman and Ratner also touch on the necessity and usefulness of Ann Arbor parks as social infrastructure and their role as a place for social action and protest. The couple wants their report to be useful for park visitors and hope that it inspires Ann Arborites to visit parks they have never seen. Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation: Tubing prohibited on Argo Cascades starting Friday
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Starting Friday, you wont be able to lazily float along Argo Cascades in your tube, according to Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation. The department made an announcement Wednesday afternoon that tubing will no longer be permitted in the Argo Cascades section of the Huron River, which wraps around the northeast part of downtown Ann Arbor. The decision was made to support ordinances and orders made by the City of Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County Health Department. The City of Ann Arbor ordinance, effective as of Monday, Aug. 24, limited outdoor social gatherings to 25 people and indoor gatherings to 10. But individuals with their own tubes continue to use the Argo Cascades creating crowds that are not consistent with the current orders.Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation staff will work with Ann Arbor Police Department to enforce the new ordinance.

On Monday night, the Ann Arbor City Council unanimously passed the temporary emergency ordinance, which limits social gatherings and requires face coverings. Ann Arbors historic Blue Front to reopen mid-August
ANN ARBOR Having shut its doors in June due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the historic Blue Front in downtown Ann Arbor will reopen in mid-August with new owners. He said buying the Blue Front seemed like a good way to diversify while also preserving an Ann Arbor landmark. When able to, Vogt said that Blue Front will return to offering tasting events as well as monthly beer and wine clubs. 2 people killed in crash on East Pleasant Road in Washtenaw County
FREEDOM TOWNSHIP, Mich. A man and woman were killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday night on East Pleasant Road near Parker Road in Washtenaw County. Michigan State Police identified the victims as Michael Winokur, 40, of Ann Arbor, and Iris Floyd, 90, also of Ann Arbor. Troopers responded to the crash about 6:21 p.m.State police are investigating the cause of the crash, but a preliminary investigation suggested that speed may have been a factor. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. This is an ongoing investigation.

MLive Media Group makes pay cuts, furloughs employees amid COVID-19 pandemic
ANN ARBOR – MLive Media Group announced on Wednesday that it will be implementing temporary pay cuts through the end of the year due to a significant loss of advertising revenue during the COVID-19 outbreak. In June, the company will reexamine if it will need to require employees to take an additional unpaid week off. Similar to other local news outlets across the country, MLive Media Group said it has suffered a steep decline in revenue during the pandemic. Formed in 2012, MLive Media Group owns MLive.com and operates newspapers in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Saginaw. In response to the temporary measures, MLive launched a subscription program last week for its online readers to support its reporting.
