‘There’s soul, there’s community’: Renewed push to shop on Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion for the holidays
Detroit’s historic Avenue of Fashion is located on Livernois Avenue between 6 and 8 Mile Road. Before malls, it was a place people would go for luxury shopping and local organizations want to bring that back.
Creating art on the “Ave.”
There’s a place on the Avenue of Fashion in Detroit bringing something very unique to the area. Art in Motion Ceramic Studio and Gallery is a cool place to shop and learn. Kay Willingham, Owner/Operator of Art in Motion Ceramic Studio and Gallery told “Live in the D’s,” April Morton, “We offer parties, classes, for all ages; I have a wonderful space here a lot bigger than where I was further down the way. We also have a cute little playroom, which is just a bonus room where kids can have a party or eat, or entertain your guests.” The business has been around nearly 9 years and is located on Livernois Avenue between 7 Mile and 8 Mile Roads. This is the 2nd location on the “Ave.”. Willingham says she outgrew her last space due to the popularity of ceramic making, something she says is unique to the area where she grew up. “It was the place to be, the place to shop and, of course, the place to live during that time, and even now, it’s still a very thriving community,” Willingham said. It’s a community, she says, she’s fortunate to share her talents with. “My present students now are more into hand building and sculpting, but you can learn how to throw on the wheel, paint your own pottery, you can do slip casting, so it’s pretty open to whatever your experience level is,” she said.

After many weeks of construction, Livernois Avenue is open for business. Now current business and restaurant owners are looking forward to reclaiming the title, Avenue of Fashion. Bartell said the completed construction project, which included expanded sidewalks, added bike lanes and resurfaced roads, has been helpful to the businesses, and visitors as well. Both Bartell and Mitchell hope the new version of the Avenue of Fashion will draw investors, potential business owners and home buyers to the area. Check out the video to see how the Avenue of Fashion has progressed over the past few years.
In Bagley, own this perfect little Tudor-style home for $225K
Its no wonder prices in Bagley have been steadily on the rise. The northwest Detroit neighborhood is right next to a vibrant commercial corridor, the Avenue of Fashion, and full of attractive, well-maintained homes. Just like this one on Santa Barbara that just hit the market for $224,900. We love the exterior with its Tudor-ish touches: the multiple roof lines, bay window, stone accents around the front entrance, and half-timbering. 17369 Santa Barbara is listed with David Antonick of Brookstone Realtors for $224,900.
detroit.curbed.comThree new businesses open on Avenue of Fashion with end of road construction in sight
In the midst of trying road construction, a handful of owners along the Avenue of Fashion cut the ribbons on their new businesses and are set to have grand opening celebrations on Small Business Saturday this November 30. The $17-million streetscaping project on Livernois Avenue between Eight Mile Road and Margareta Street that began in May has been tough on local businesses. At various points during construction, parts of the sidewalk were unusable, there was no street parking, and traffic was reduced to two lanes. Theres been several Livernois Soup grant events, a free shuttle program, and loan program for small businesses on the strip. The three businesses set to open also received a total of $110,000 from the Motor City Match.
detroit.curbed.comDetroit small businesses struggle to stay afloat amid Avenue of Fashion construction project
DETROIT - Small business owners in one of Detroit's new hotspots, the Avenue of Fashion, are crying foul, saying the city's construction project might force them to close for good. The construction project is supposed to transform the busy retail hub in the city, but it's creating trouble for businesses. The area is expected to be beautiful when the project is done, but businesses are having a hard time surviving until that point. Customers are having trouble getting to the businesses because of the road construction and beautification plan. Signage is now in place, parking areas have been set up and a grant program is being rolled out, but business owners are wondering why it took so long.
