As seven Big Ten cities, including East Lansing, prepare to host college football games this weekend, elected officials from across the conference are pushing for COVID-19 data from their communities to be considered in planning for games. Mayors of 11 Big Ten cities, including Aaron Stephens of East Lansing, Christopher Taylor of Ann Arbor and Andy Schor of Lansing, sent a letter to the Big Ten conference office this week, as the conference is set to hold its first games of the 2020 season starting on Friday. In addition, if the positive rate for all players, coaches and staff for a team rises above 7.5 percent, then the team is also shut down for a week. The mayors asked that the positive rate for the community at large be added as a metric alongside those. They wrote that they “do no expect this standard to be in line with the current standard for the team.” Positive rates on Michigan and Michigan State’s campuses are both at two percent or lower for the most recent weeks available.

The decision comes with stringent COVID-19 safety guidelines, headlined by two main statistics the conference will monitor throughout the season:Two COVID-19 statsThe two stats outlined in the Big Ten release are team positivity rate and population positivity rate. Big Ten officials define population positivity rate and the “number of COVID-19 positive individuals divided by the total population at risk." Team test positivity rate and population positivity rate thresholds will be used to determine recommendations for continuing practice and competition, officials said. All COVID-19 positive student-athletes will have to undergo comprehensive cardiac testing to include labs and biomarkers, ECG, Echocardiogram and a Cardiac MRI. Following cardiac evaluation, student-athletes must receive clearance from a cardiologist designated by the university for the primary purpose of cardiac clearance for COVID-19 positive student-athletes.

After presidents meet, Big Ten football still in limbo
The Big Ten presidents were presented a comprehensive plan Sunday to conduct a fall football season, but a final decision is still to come. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Big Ten was not making its return to competition plans public. The person said the meeting broke up without the presidents and chancellors voting and with no set plans for them to reconvene. Still, if they act quickly Big Ten football could kickoff as soon as the weekend of Oct. 17. That schedule could set up Big Ten teams to be part of the College Football Playoff.

Midwest legislative leaders urge Big Ten to reconsider fall sports
Michigan Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) and other Midwest legislative leaders announced Tuesday they sent a joint letter to Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren encouraging the conference to reconsider its stance on the fall sports season. The Big Ten Conference announced on Aug. 11 that it would move its football season to the spring semester because of health risks associated with the coronavirus. Over the weekend, President Trump tweeted Big Ten members University of Michigan and Michigan State University could be excluded from the next football season due to the governors response to the coronavirus. Big Ten Football is looking really good, but may lose Michigan, Illinois and Maryland because of those Governors' ridiculous lack of interest or political support, Trump tweeted Sunday. Last week, the Michigan High School School Athletic Association (MHSAA) reinstated football and other high school sports.

Less than four months before the scheduled kickoff of the college football season, not one of the 14 schools in the Big Ten Conference can say for sure it will have students back on campus this fall a crucial step for sports. The football season, for now, is due to begin Aug. 29, though Big Ten schools dont begin play until the following week. Commissioners of the nations major college football conferences told Vice President Mike Pence last month that college sports cannot return from the coronavirus shutdown until campuses have reopened. Officials at Ohio State, Penn State, Illinois and Wisconsin said they expect to make announcements in June or July. Think about that, if students arent on campus that means the institution has made a decision its not safe for those students to be here on campus, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said.

The Southeastern Conference, Big Ten Conference, Pac-12 Conference, Big East, Big 12 Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference all canceled their men's championship basketball tournaments ahead of the NCAA's announcement. The NCAA had previously said the upcoming men's and women's March Madness basketball tournaments, which were scheduled to begin in days, would be played without fans. The Jayhawks are the top-ranked men's basketball team in The Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Big East conference men's basketball tournament had already begun at Madison Square Garden in New York City, but now will not continue.
