Linden rides stingy defense to top of Metro League Stripes Division football race
SWARTZ CREEK, MI – Linden did something Friday night no other football team has been able to accomplish this season. The Eagles shut down Swartz Creek’s high-powered offense in a showdown for first-place in the Metro League Stripes Division. Swartz Creek entered the game unbeaten in five games and averaging more than 39 points a game. Fenton has won or shared nine of the last 11 Metro League championships while Linden hasn’t finished atop the Metro since 2012, when the Eagles shared the title with – you guessed it – Fenton. Swartz Creek went up 12-7 less than three minutes into the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Bush.mlive.com

Short-handed Detroit Lions signing OL Kayode Awosika off Eagles’ practice squad
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are signing offensive lineman Kayode Awosika off the Eagles’ practice squad, according to NFL Network, fortifying their depth after opening the practice week without three starters and one key reserve on their offensive line. Awosika is a former undrafted free agent who caught on with the Eagles last year. He didn’t appear in a game until the finale, when he played 43 offensive snaps against Dallas, but got in practice time at both guard and tackle along the way. Awosika was a three-year starter at the University of Buffalo, where he started at both tackle spots and was an enforcer in the running game. He elected to forgo his final year of eligibility after an All-MAC season in 2020, but was not drafted.mlive.com
Inside the locker room: Lions try to explain how Eagles QB Jalen Hurts ran all over them
DETROIT -- Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had the Detroit Lions running in circles more times than not in Philadelphia’s 38-35 win to open the new season. Hurts ran 17 times for 90 yards and one touchdown, throwing for 243 yards with no interceptions. Look, I think we will be better for that,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. “He made it right.”Related: Detroit Lions prepare for tough task of dual-threat Eagles QB Jalen Hurts in Week 1It isn’t easy to prepare for a mobile quarterback without practicing against one. Ben Johnson’s first game calling offensive plays a mixed bag for Detroit Lions
DETROIT -- New coordinator Ben Johnson is calling plays for the Lions, putting to bed one of the last lingering mysteries about the offense this season. Hopefully we can attribute it to first-game stuff, and hopefully next week, stuff like that isn’t happening. Johnson took over for Anthony Lynn in January and rewrote the playbook after a series of film sessions with Goff. Chark also wasn’t on the same page for a pass, running upfield while Goff threw to his back-shoulder toward the sideline. The running game was a big reason for that, with D’Andre Swift ripping Philadelphia for 144 yards on the ground -- the best opener by a Lions running back since you-know-who in 1996 -- and accounting for a career-high 175 yards overall.mlive.com

Study looks at decades of bald eagle deaths in Michigan
DETROIT A study of more than 30 years of data on bald eagles in Michigan shows the leading causes of death for the iconic national bird are being hit by cars and lead poisoning.
