Community pulls together to support Officer Courts’ family
A day of tributes for Detroit police Officer Loren Courts as his family, friends, and the city say their final goodbye. Courts was killed in the line of duty less than two weeks ago, and during the funeral service Monday, an end of watch call conveyed one last dispatch to him.

Public viewing for Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon to be held Monday
DETROIT – Beloved Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon will be laid to rest this week. Napoleon died from complications related to COVID-19 Dec. 17. A public viewing will be held Monday at the Swanson Funeral Home on East Grand Boulevard in Detroit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.Services will be held Tuesday at the Greater Grace Temple on Seven Mile Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The family will have its own private service. A live stream of the event will be available on the Swanson Funeral Home site.

Greater Grace Temple holds rally to honor George Floyd, promote peace
DETROIT – One of Detroit’s largest churches held a rally Thursday in George Floyd’s memory. Escorted by police, the rally started on Woodward Avenue at the city offices in Highland Park and marched through the streets of Detroit. RELATED: LIVE STREAM: Detroit mayor, police chief to address city protests, coronavirus pandemicIt was one of several marches across the state Thursday with similar events in Saginaw and Kalamazoo. Attendees said the message is that there are protests and riots and the public shouldn’t be confusing the two as the same. The march was inclusive of multiple religious groups, with Islamic clerics, Jewish rabbis and other spiritual leaders involved.

Gov. Whitmer, Mayor Duggan join unity march through Detroit in honor of George Floyd
Gretchen Whitmer and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan joined a unity march through Detroit to honor the life of George Floyd. Whitmer and Duggan joined local clergy and law enforcement members, starting in Highland Park and ending on Woodward Avenue near Wayne State University. We need to stand up and we need to speak out and we need to take action, Presbyterian leader Bob Agnew said. As the march neared Wayne State, everyone turned the corner at Warren Avenue and took a knee, giving Floyd a moment of silence. We know that we are at a tipping point in this country and we cannot let this day only be a day, Whitmer said.
