Police shoot, kill man in Crawford County following traffic crash
CRAWFORD COUNTY, MI -- An investigation has been launched into the fatal shooting of a Tawas man by a Michigan State Police trooper Friday night. It appeared the vehicle been had driven off the left side of the freeway and into the ditch, police said. Police said it appears the trooper made contact with the driver -- identified as Stockton -- and believed him to be intoxicated. Stockton was pronounced dead at the scene, while the trooper and cadet were not injured. Following department protocol, the trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.

MONROE COUNTY, MI – Police have identified a previously unknown woman who was killed while walking on I-75 in Monroe County. Paula Quarterman, 41, of Warren, died earlier this month, when she was hit by an SUV on northbound I-75, according to Michigan State Police. Police were called at 9:48 p.m. Jan. 11, to northbound I-75 near the northbound scales on mile marker 8 for the reported crash involving a pedestrian on the highway, police said. Police say officers attempted to pull over the vehicles, but the drivers did not cooperate. Pursuing officers were able to stay with one of the drivers who eventually ran out of gas near an overpass on I-75 near Pleasant Street in Detroit. When police approached the car, they say the minor got out of the passenger side and immediately jumped over the retaining wall, landing 25 feet below in an empty yard. The boy is currently under the care of his mother and hospital staff while the investigation into the incident continues.

Officers were notified by dispatch that there were reports of a man running across south I-75 on foot, headed west off the freeway, police said. The troopers searched the area but were unable to find the man while the vehicle was towed from the scene. MSP troopers caught up with the Gaylord officers and found the man running near a lake.

Boyd Burton Jr., 71, of Walbridge Ohio, died July 14, when he was ejected from his vehicle during the crash near the village of South Rockwood, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Burton, driving a 2006 Ford Escape, was going north in the center lane of I-75 at about 4:47 a.m. when he was stuck by another northbound vehicle, forcing Burton’s vehicle off the freeway, police said. DETROIT – One person was killed in a fiery multiple-vehicle crash on I-75 Wednesday afternoon that involved a double gravel hauler and a semi-truck hauling a tanker, WXYZ Detroit reports. At about 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, on southbound I-75 near Shaefer in Detroit, a double gravel hauler struck a pickup truck, causing it to catch fire, the report said. The driver of the pickup truck died in the crash. After hitting the pickup, the gravel hauler continued and hit a semi-truck hauling a tanker, the report said. The drivers of the gravel hauler and semi-truck reported no injuries.

BUENA VISTA, MI - A motorcyclist was arrested in Saginaw County after being clocked speeding at 141 mph. The trooper did not pursue the speeding motorcycle and notified dispatch, according to MSP. The motorcyclist then changed lanes and was clocked at 141 mph when passing the stopped trooper, said police. The work on US-23 from I-75 to South Huron Avenue and on I-75 from Old M-108 (Exit 337) to the Mackinac Bridge will begin on April 11 and last until mid-November. Primarily, I-75 traffic will be maintained, however, at times, I-75 traffic will be detoured using local routes. Southbound US-23 traffic will be detoured on Jamet Street, Louvigny Street, Central Avenue, and Nicolet Street. Additionally, a three-day closure is expected around June 7-9 as crews demolish and replace the deck and beams of the US-23 bridge.

STANDISH, MI - Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $37 million to resurface 6.4 miles of US-23 in Arenac County. Plans are also in place to replace the US-23 connector bridge over M-13 with a roundabout as part of the project. To ensure work is completed this year, the contractor may begin preliminary work on bridge structures as early as March 28, according to MDOT, and the work will result in minimal impact on drivers. Additional impacts are expected to occur during bridge work on I-75/M-61 and road work along US-23. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy and carry the most traffic, according to MDOT.
