Who’s left for Tigers on depleted MLB free-agent market?
The Detroit Tigers, who had one of the worst offenses in baseball in 2022, have not been especially active so far. The Tigers still need an infielder, preferably a left-handed hitter, and an outfielder, almost certainly a right-handed hitter. Right-handed hitting catcher Eric Haase has outfield experience, but if the season started today he’d be the Tigers’ No. Chad Pinder plays solid outfield defense and mashes lefties but his walk-to-strikeout ratio won’t impress the Tigers. Lefty Andrew Chafin hasn’t yet signed with anyone, and although he’s expected to fetch far more than the Tigers are prepared to pay, he enjoyed pitching for the Tigers and the Tigers enjoyed having him.
mlive.comTigers prez: Nationals getting a ‘great person’ in Jeimer Candelario
SAN DIEGO -- Jeimer Candelario still has a lot of friends in the Detroit Tigers organization. The 29-year-old third baseman signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Washington Nationals after being non-tendered by the Tigers. New Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Monday that Candelario “made a really big impression in this organization. He’s an unbelievable kid, he’s got great character, he’s a leader in the clubhouse,” Martinez said. The Tigers haven’t yet said how they plan to replace Candelario at third base.
mlive.comJeimer Candelario sends farewell message to Tigers’ fans
Jeimer Candelario has spent virtually his entire big-league career as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Candelario sent a message to Tigers’ fans through his social media accounts shortly after news came out that he was signing a one-year, $5 million contract with the Washington Nationals. “I just want to thank the Tigers organization, teammates and fans,” Candelario wrote. He finished his Tigers’ career with a .243 average (519-for-2,139) in 590 games. He had 124 doubles, 13 triples and 65 home runs and a .728 OPS (100 OPS+).
mlive.comFormer Tiger Jeimer Candelario signs with Nationals
The Washington Nationals are betting that Jeimer Candelario will bounce back from a rough 2022 and look more like the player who helped carry the Detroit Tigers’ offense in 2020 and 2021. Candelario agreed to a one-year contract with the Nationals on Tuesday. The Tigers have no obvious in-house option to replace Candelario at third and the free-agent market is limited at that position. But Candelario, knowing that he’d be an attractive bounce-back candidate for a number of teams, preferred to hit free agency. Candelario will get everyday at-bats with the rebuilding Nationals, while the Nats will get a high-upside player on an affordable one-year deal.
mlive.comTigers cut ties with 3 longtime infielders, including Jeimer Candelario
The Detroit Tigers have parted ways with three longtime infielders, declining to tender 2023 contracts to Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro and Willi Castro. The news was released late Friday night at the deadline for teams to non-tender players who were not already under contract for next season. Jeimer Candelario was slated to earn about $7 million had he been retained, while Harold Castro ($2.6 million) and Willi Castro ($1.7 million) had more modest estimates. mlive.comWho will Tigers keep? Final major deadline for roster decisions is Friday.
The final important deadline on the early postseason calendar is Friday, when teams must decide whether to tender contracts to players not already under contract for 2023. The Tigers began the offseason with 12 arbitration-eligible players and have already parted ways with three of them. “Those decisions are really tough, especially for me because I don’t know these players as well as most presidents know their players,” Harris said earlier this month at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas. There are other factors that must be weighed by Harris: The Tigers like Cisnero, but he’ll turn 34 in April. TIGERS’ 40-MAN ROSTER (40)Left-handed pitchers (5): Tyler Alexander, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal, Gregory Soto, Joey Wentz.
mlive.comAfter first wave of roster cuts, more decisions loom for Tigers
LAS VEGAS -- The Detroit Tigers have sliced eight players from their roster over the last 48 hours, but the cuts aren’t done yet. Tuesday is the deadline to add minor-leaguers to the 40-man roster to protect them from being selected in next month’s Rule 5 Draft. And if he wants the flexibility to keep doing that all winter, he can’t jam the roster with young players. (Any of the added youngsters must remain on the 40-man roster until at least March 10, 2023). “Those decisions are really tough, especially for me because I don’t know these players as well as most presidents know their players,” Harris said.
mlive.comNew Tigers boss Scott Harris identifies top 3 offseason needs
LAS VEGAS -- Scott Harris is talking to agents, fielding calls from other teams and making plans to improve the Detroit Tigers’ league-worst offense. Harris and the top executives from the league’s 29 other teams are in Las Vegas this week for the annual General Manager Meetings. “I think the goal is to create a collection of position players that fit together to give (manager A.J. The Tigers have a glut of left-handed hitting outfielders -- Austin Meadows, Riley Greene, Akil Baddoo and Kerry Carpenter -- while most of their infielders bat from the right side. Two notable exceptions are switch-hitter Jeimer Candelario and left-handed hitting Harold Castro.
mlive.comTigers winter roster decisions: Who’s back? Who’s on the bubble? Who’s out?
Drew Hutchison’s exit from the Detroit Tigers’ roster happened so fast that we didn’t even have a chance to include him on the “really vulnerable” list for this offseason. That’s the first thing to remember as you peruse the list below: Many of the most vulnerable players actually had pretty decent years. But baseball is a business, and a variety of factors beyond the playing field can impact a player’s roster status. So any player who survives the initial roster pruning could still be vulnerable later in the winter, even going into next spring. If the Tigers decide to add a veteran catcher this winter -- or even if they don’t -- Sanchez could be vulnerable.
mlive.comTigers sweep White Sox, who are now eliminated from playoff contention
Back-to-back RBI singles by Jonathan Schoop and Jeimer Candelario sparked a three-run eighth inning and led the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The Tigers (60-92) swept the three-game series from the Sox (76-77), who were officially eliminated from the 2022 playoff chase when the Cleveland Guardians clinched their first AL Central Division title since 2018 on Sunday afternoon. Tigers left Tyler Alexander, who had a no-hitter through six innings in his last start, pitched well again on Sunday. Although the Tigers swept the weekend series, they lost 12 of 19 games to the White Sox on the season as a whole. That’s likely little consolation for the White Sox, who have faltered down the stretch while the Guardians have surged to decisively win the American League Central division crown.

mlive.comShould new Tigers GM take a mulligan on 2023 and regroup for 2024?
DETROIT -- The bleak outlook for the Detroit Tigers in 2023 just got even more depressing. It seems a flight of wishful thinking to imagine that both of them will high-level contributors in 2023. Two infielders who the Tigers hoped would anchor a powerful lineup in 2023 are instead proving to be a different kind of anchor. In other words, so many of the players that the Tigers counted on to contend in 2023 and beyond now have major question marks -- or worse. The Tigers could do the opposite and double down with another round of big spending this winter.

mlive.comWill Jeimer Candelario be Tigers’ 3rd baseman in 2023? Don’t count him out yet.
It’s no secret that the Detroit Tigers have a decision looming about third baseman Jeimer Candelario’s future. In October, the Tigers will have to decide whether to commit to him for 2023 or decline to tender him a control. A year ago, he had a league-leading 42 doubles to go along with a .795 OPS (120 OPS+). Candelario has started about two-thirds of the Tigers’ games since returning from the injured list on June 20, so he’s hardly been cast aside. mlive.comDo Tigers wish they had do-over on Isaac Paredes trade?
Well, it’s possible that Isaac Paredes has hit another home run while you were reading this article. Back in April, the Tigers needed an outfielder after Riley Greene after suffered an injury just days before Opening Day. Another frustration: When the Tigers made the trade, it appeared they wouldn’t need a second baseman or third baseman until at least 2024. Meadows has been reasonably productive when healthy -- at least by the Tigers’ meager standards -- but he still doesn’t have a home run. And if Paredes were still in the Tigers’ organization, there’s a chance he’d still be in Toledo right now.

mlive.comHow the 2022 Tigers’ roster was built: Where they’re from and how they got here
DETROIT -- The signings of Javier Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez understandably got much of the attention this winter, but most of the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster was built more methodically over the last several years. The TIgers finalized their 28-man roster on Wednesday and will open the 2022 season on Friday afternoon at Comerica Park against the Chicago White Sox. This roster is just one snapshot in time and it will look far different in a few weeks. THE OPENING DAY ROSTER (28)Left-handed pitchers (4): Tyler Alexander, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal, Gregory Soto. Haase came to the Tigers organization from the Indians in 2018, while Garneau was traded back to the Tigers last summer.
mlive.comTigers want to get better at turning 2: ‘We bluntly told our players exactly where we stood’
There have been encouraging signs in the shortened spring training, including a crisp 5-4-3 double play started by Candelario on Monday’s game in Lakeland. “Candy’s picked up his pace at third, which has been an emphasis this spring,” Hinch said. “Jonathan’s a little bit of a difference-maker turning the double play. Although shortstop and later second baseman Willi Castro took much of the blame, the rotating cast of infielders playing the middle positions didn’t help. “We’ve bluntly told our players exactly where we stood and where we want to be,” Hinch said.
mlive.comTigers’ Isaac Paredes remains intriguing young player, but he faces roster squeeze
The Tigers have a really crowded infield, especially if -- as expected -- Spencer Torkelson makes the club as everyday first baseman. With Jonathan Schoop at second, newcomer Javier Baez at shortstop and Jeimer Candelario at third, there simply won’t be a lot of at-bats to go around. Paredes debuted at third base in the COVID-shortened 2020 season when Jeimer Candelario moved over to first base to replace the injured C.J. Last spring, he worked extensively at second base and even tried his hand at shortstop. This spring he was placed in the same hitting group with Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario and Javier Baez.

The idea of a spring slump is usually not taken seriously, but the Tigers third baseman really needed something good to happen. Candelario keyed a five-run rally in the sixth inning with a solo home run off New York Yankees reliever Joely Rodriguez. mlive.comIs Miggy moving down the lineup? Projecting Tigers’ 2022 batting order
Cabrera is no longer the feared hitter he once was and the Tigers have restocked the lineup around him. Cabrera was batting fifth, behind Javier Baez and Jeimer Candelario in the middle of the order. But that’s easier said than done, because Barnhart will probably bat eighth or ninth, and Baddoo (and perhaps eventually Riley Greene) will be at the top of the order. Riley Greene, CF (L)8. Riley Greene, CF (L)7.
mlive.comTigers reach deals with 7 players, but could face Spencer Turnbull in arbitration battle
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.
mlive.comTigers cut ties with Matthew Boyd, but choose to bring back 8 other players
The Detroit Tigers declined to offer a 2022 contract to Matthew Boyd, making the veteran left-handed pitcher a free agent for the first time in his career. Players like Boyd are said to be “non-tendered” and are free to sign with any team. By tendering a contract, the Tigers are committed to negotiating a contract with the player and going through the arbitration process if necessary. Infielders (8): Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro, Willi Castro, Kody Clemens, Isaac Paredes, Jonathan Schoop, Zack Short. Nov. 30: Announced that left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd would not be tendered a contract for 2022.
