First-place Twins shut out Tigers to win 6th straight game
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sonny Gray compiled a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven sharp innings, carrying the Minnesota Twins past the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory. Gray (2-1) allowed four hits and one walk in by far his best of six starts with his new team. Gio Urshela had three hits and an RBI, and Carlos Correa hit a run-scoring double for the Twins against Tigers rookie Beau Brieske (0-4), who remains winless in six career starts. LOWER LEVERAGEThe Tigers have bumped right-hander Michael Fulmer back in the bullpen pecking order while he works through some struggles. Twins: RHP Dylan Bundy (3-2, 5.14 ERA) is on track to make his seventh start of the season in his careful return from COVID-19.

The Tigers (7-13) snapped a six-game losing streak and will try to win the series against the Dodgers (13-7) in the finale on Sunday afternoon. Brieske matched Dodgers starter and future Hall-of-Famer Clayton Kershaw on what turned out to be a historic night. Kershaw’s strikeout of Spencer Torkelson in the fourth was the 2,697th of his career, setting a new Dodgers’ franchise record. mlive.comTigers’ Michael Fulmer, trying to get a grip, may start toting a wet rag to mound
MINNEAPOLIS -- Be advised: The next time you see Detroit Tigers reliever Michael Fulmer on the mound, he might pull a wet rag out of his back pocket. But the particular one that seemed to vex the Tigers on Tuesday night was more related to the cold. “(MLB) has encouraged it, but no one’s really done it because it kind of sounds funny to bring a wet rag in your pocket in this type of temperature,” Hinch said. And if it’s mildly annoying to tote around a wet rag, it’s better than accidentally hitting or hurting someone. That’s not going to competitively going to work out in his favor, either.”

mlive.comTigers reach deals with 7 players, but could face Spencer Turnbull in arbitration battle
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.
mlive.comTigers cut ties with Matthew Boyd, but choose to bring back 8 other players
The Detroit Tigers declined to offer a 2022 contract to Matthew Boyd, making the veteran left-handed pitcher a free agent for the first time in his career. Players like Boyd are said to be “non-tendered” and are free to sign with any team. By tendering a contract, the Tigers are committed to negotiating a contract with the player and going through the arbitration process if necessary. Infielders (8): Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro, Willi Castro, Kody Clemens, Isaac Paredes, Jonathan Schoop, Zack Short. Nov. 30: Announced that left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd would not be tendered a contract for 2022.
mlive.comTigers mailbag: Verlander and Scherzer won’t be cheap. Is it worth pursuing them?
Although most of you liked my way-to-early 2022 lineup projection, the response was a bit more tepid when it came to my prediction for the Detroit Tigers’ 2022 pitching staff. You’re given the chance to reunite Scherzer and Verlander for two years with a club option for Year 3 at $25-$30 million for Scherzer and $20 million with incentives for Verlander. I think Verlander will probably seek a deal like that if he rejects Houston’s qualifying offer ($18.4 million). Some team will be thrilled to have him, but is that really the best investment for a team like the Tigers? So if owner Christopher Ilitch really wanted to spend $200 million (like the Tigers did in 2016), there’s nothing stopping him from doing so.
mlive.comTigers arbitration projections: 13 players due $33.7 million
A year ago, the Detroit Tigers had nine arbitration-eligible players, and all nine of them were ultimately tendered contracts for 2022. The least-experienced players, with little service time, are paid the league minimum (or whatever the team chooses to offer). There is also a small group of Super Two eligible players with just under three years of service time who are granted arbitration status. After six years of service time, players can be free agents and are no longer under team control or subject to arbitration. If all 13 Tigers are tendered contracts for 2021, MLB Trade Rumors estimates they will earn $33.7 million.

mlive.comTigers mailbag: Should Tigers stand pat at catcher or acquire someone new?
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Eric Haase has hit a lot of home runs. Yes, the Tigers could stand pat, but I don’t think they will. If the Tigers don’t bring back Greiner and/or Garneau, they will surely sign someone with a similar profile to provide minor-league depth. Detroit Tigers reliever Michael Fulmer (32) throws a pitch during their MLB game against the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park in Detroit, on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Matt Manning will probably end up their too, but I don’t think they’re going to hand him a job on a silver platter.
mlive.comTigers get pinch hits to tie in 9th, but Cardinals come back to win in 10th
The Tigers (61-67) and Cardinals (63-62) split the brief two-game series. But the Tigers got a two-out, pinch-hit double by Miguel Cabrera, followed by a pinch-hit single by Harold Castro. Cabrera hustled home to beat the throw, as the Tigers had no pinch-runner available with a depleted bench. Jeimer Candelario grounded into a double play, forcing Tigers reliever Michael Fulmer to walk a tightrope with no lead in the bottom of the 10th. But rookie Lars Nootbar shot a two-out single through the right side of the infield to give the Cardinals the walk-off win.
mlive.comTyler Alexander starts strong, bullpen gets big outs in Tigers’ 2-1 win over Indians

But Cisnero bared down to get two pop outs and a strike out of Oscar Mercado to end the inning. The Tigers scored in the second inning when Jeimer Candelario doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Short.
mlive.comTigers’ Michael Fulmer is healthy and trying to stay that way
Michael Fulmer’s first big-league outing in a month on Tuesday night was smooth, scoreless and really short. That didn’t give much of an opportunity to see the changes that Fulmer has made while away from the club. But the Detroit Tigers reliever is trying to ensure that his most recent trip to the injured list is his last one. Fulmer wants to throw hard, needs to throw hard. The Tigers would love to see Fulmer continue on the path toward being an elite reliever that he was taking before the injury.
mlive.comTigers activate Michael Fulmer, designate veteran reliever for assignment
The Detroit Tigers activated right-handed reliever Michael Fulmer from the injured list before Tuesday night’s game in Minnesota. He might not have to wait long to get into a game, as closer Gregory Soto pitched two innings (42 pitches) in Monday night’s 10-inning loss to the Twins. mlive.comA.J. Hinch is mixing and matching Tigers’ top relievers, and getting results
DETROIT -- After Detroit Tigers reliever Gregory Soto entered Wednesday afternoon’s game in the sixth inning to log a key out in a close game, manager A.J. Soto, a southpaw, finished the sixth by getting a key lefty, Matt Carpenter, to strike out with two runners on base. “What I have really learned about managing is that the game can be critical at any point,” Hinch said. Fulmer ended up giving up back-to-back home runs to Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa and the Tigers lost the game. Cameron smacked a grounder through a drawn-in infield against Angels closer Raisel Iglesias to break a 3-3 tie and give the Tigers the lead. But it hasn’t escaped notice that a significant change at one position has roughly coincided with the Tigers’ late-May hot streak. Q: Do Haase and Rogers really represent that big of an upgrade over Ramos and Greiner? Ultimately I think Ramos can still be useful as a designated hitter, pinch-hitter and, yes, a backup or third catcher. Q: Who will the Tigers use later in the summer when Mize and Skubal hit their innings limits? The Tigers haven’t given a specific number, but Mize is currently on pace for 180 innings in a 162-game season.

That’s what happened when Joe Jimenez and Shane Greene were chosen as the Tigers’ lone representatives in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Short season could give rebuilding Detroit Tigers a shot
DETROIT On their way to 114 defeats last year, the Detroit Tigers actually won seven of their first 10 games, and they were still 12-10 in late April. With only 60 games on tap for 2020, the rebuilding Tigers could be in a position to benefit from a high-variance sprint through the regular season. His second season wasnt quite as strong, but Fulmer was still a 3.5 WAR pitcher over 25 starts. Do the Tigers really need to see another partial season of Zimmermann?
