Local Muslim civil rights group offering $1K reward for information in suspected mosque vandalism
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations is calling on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for the vandalism of the entrance sign and periphery lighting of an Islamic center on the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. Its the beginning of a new day for local mosque in Sterling Heights. Its an institute of a mosque, educational social, sports center on this piece of land, said Sam Sobh with the American Islamic Community Center (AICC). Its essential that were close to the community and we have a small center in Madison Heights, so we needed a bigger piece of land, he said. In 2018, seven Sterling Heights residents filed a lawsuit opposing the construction of a mosque in their largely Chaldean Christian neighborhood. Later, the city of Sterling Heights decided to enter into a consent judgement that granted AICC permission to build the mosque even though doing so violated the citys zoning ordinance.
American Moslem Society sues Woodmere Cemetery alleging breach of contract, disparate treatment
DETROIT Michigans oldest mosque sits across the street from Woodmere Cemetery. For years, the American Moslem Society has bought plots in quantity for their members. Woodmere told AMS that until all the plots are paid in full there will be no expansion, according to a lawsuit filed by AMS. The mosque said thats a breach of contract.
