Ford's electric Mustang crossover takes aim at Tesla, but some purists are furious

The Mustang is one of Ford's crown jewels and perhaps one of the most significant cars of all time. But now the Mustang name is about to enter an entirely new era, and not everyone is happy about it. But Mustang sales have fallen off a cliff since the car's most recent redesign in 2015. BMW's sport utility vehicles, for example, made up 37.3% of the brand's sales in 2018, an increase over the 33.8% in 2017. Automakers are frenetically making electric vehicles to both comply with increasingly stringent rules around the world and stave off competition from hyped-up electric carmakers such as Tesla.

Ford's first all-electric SUV, the Mach-E, will be a Mustang

DETROIT Ford Motor is expanding its iconic Mustang franchise to include the automaker's first-ever, all-electric SUV: the Mustang Mach-E. Ford, prior to announcing the name on Thursday, had been referring to the Mach-E as a "Mustang-inspired" SUV rather than a product that would bear the name and logo. The automaker declined to provide additional details regarding the decision to make the all-electric SUV a Mustang. It's likely a play for the vehicle to stand out in an increasingly crowded EV segment that suffers from a lack of consumer awareness and interest. The Mustang Mach-E, according to Ford, will be available in U.S., Canadian and European dealerships next fall. Online reservations for the vehicle will start following the SUV's unveiling during Sunday's private event, days ahead of its public debut at the L.A. Auto Show.

Bronco, Mustang-inspired EV to lead Ford's new product line in 2020

In 2020, Ford is introducing a new Mustang-inspired, all-electric crossover vehicle and bringing back the Ford Bronco SUV, which was discontinued in 1996. "This is an incredibly transitional period for us," Kumar Galhotra, Ford President of North America, said Tuesday while discussing the plans during a presentation at the J.P. Morgan Auto Conference. A slide from Ford President of North America Kumar Galhotra during the J.P. Morgan Auto Conference on Tuesday detailed the company's upcoming model launches. Ford, according to Galhotra, will lower the average age of its product portfolio in the U.S. from 5.6 years in 2019 to 3.3 years in 2020. That's being accomplished by cutting some unpopular sedans, including the Ford Taurus, and adding new models, according to Galhotra.
