Lee James Mouat Jr., 44, of Newport, Michigan was charged on June 8, 2020 for assaulting an 18-year-old Black man in Monroe County. MONROE, Mich. – A Michigan man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal hate crime for attacking a Black teenager. Lee Mouat, 43, of Newport willfully caused bodily injury to the victim because of the teen’s race, the Department of Justice says. According to the plea agreement, Mouat confronted a group of Black teenagers, including the victim, at a state park in Monroe. Mouat repeatedly used racial slurs and said that Black people had no right to use the public beach where the incident occurred.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Billie Jean King and the other members of the Original 9 who laid the groundwork for the women’s professional tennis tour are the first group nominated together for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. They join Jonas Bjorkman, Sergi Brugera, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Lleyton Hewitt, Lisa Raymond and the late Dennis Van der Meer on the ballot announced Monday for the Hall’s Class of 2021. That group and Van der Meer, who advocated for a universal teaching method in tennis, were nominated in the Contributor Category. Van der Meer died last year. The full ballot now goes to the official voting group — which includes tennis journalists, historians and Hall of Fame members — and fans can vote online in the Player Category from Oct. 1-25.

The 1955 Buick Roadmaster was mounted to the back of a wall so people could see it when they were driving by. When Emily Blackburn-Kramer and Greg returned home from a trip up north they realized it was gone. They didnt realize it was stolen at first because of where it was located. Thats when he turned the front end of the car into a decorative piece with working headlights.

Monroe County man appears in court after alleged racially motivated attack on teenager
MONROE, Mich. A White man accused of attacking a Black teenager was formally charged Tuesday in what officials are calling a racially motivated crime in Monroe County. He then struck Freelon in the face with a weapon, according to officials. Lee James Mouat Jr. (WDIV)Family members said Freelon has a broken jaw, lost several teeth and has other injuries to his face. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 16, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 23. Demonstrators gathered Monday at St. Marys Park in Monroe in solidarity with Freelon.

Boil water advisory issued for Berlin Township residents
BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A boil water advisory has been issued for residents in Monroe County’s Berlin Township due to a water main break. In the advisory issued Wednesday morning, Berlin Township officials advise residents west of I-75 and west of Swan Creek Road, including Newport Road west of I-75, North Park, Newport Estates, Birchwood sub, Newport Woods and Newport Farms, are encouraged to boil water for the next three days or until further notice before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and washing fruits and vegetables. Residents and business might experience lower water pressure, a loss of water or discolored water from taps. The township said this boil water advisory is due to a water main break on Newport Road west of I-75. Local officials will notify the public when the advisory is lifted after repairs are made and proper testing has been completed, the township said.
