Michigan school count day will use โsuper blendโ formula this time
The pandemic has forced changes to school count day in Michigan. Wednesday is arguably one of the more important days on the academic calendar because โCount Dayโ determines how much funding a district is getting based on the number of students they have. Because of the pandemic, many school districts have students split up, some attending in person, some virtual, and some absent. Normally, the math looks like this: 90% of the October count is added to 10% of the previous yearโs February count. The Novi superintendent said theyโve lost about 50 students to private or online schools, which means losing about $442,000 in per-pupil funding.
Village Oaks Elementary School delivers unused school furniture to Novi families in need
NOVI, Mich. โ School is in session at Village Oaks Elementary School in Novi, but what school looks like for each child is different. Assistant superintendent of academics for the Novi Community School District R.J. Webber said 55 percent of the students are learning virtually and 45 percent are using a hybrid model. Tyler and Max Piculu are students in the elementary school and they learn from home. Thatโs why the Novi Community School District hired a moving company to bring the unused school furniture to Novi families who needed it. She thinks having the appropriate learning equipment will only make things better especially during a time when the learning situation is different for every child.
COVID-19 pandemic makes traditional โcount dayโ for schools more complex than usual
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is making the traditional โcount dayโ a much more complicated effort. Schools have an opportunity to find and count students over the next 10 days to four weeks, depending on the learning model. The Novi school district is doing hybrid learning. Dr. Steve Matthews, the superintendent of the Novi Community School District believes his district has lost some students. With senior attrition and some unaccounted students -- the number could be closer to 5,575 over its 4 week count period.
