ANN ARBOR -- A decisive second-half run gave Michigan an important win over Rutgers in the Wolverines’ first game without suspended head coach Juwan Howard. Michigan lost its first meeting of the season with Rutgers, on Jan. 4, which doubled as the program’s first-ever loss to Rutgers. After a Rutgers timeout, Bufkin scored at the rim, capping an 11-0 run that made it 59-45 with 8:50 left. The Scarlet Knights didn’t get the deficit to single digits until 1:13 left, when they scored for the final points of the game. Rutgers ended up with the final shot, a near miss from Ron Harper Jr., and Michigan led 32-30 at the break.

They topped Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State during that period to insert themselves into the NCAA Tournament conversation. Now the Scarlet Knights have the opportunity to get back on track against a Wolverines team that is dealing with a mountain of problems. Take the Scarlet Knights and the points. Rutgers and Michigan both like to play at a slower pace, which should result in fewer possessions, fewer shot attempts and ultimately fewer points. The Scarlet Knights rank 302nd in adjusted tempo in the nation per Kenpom, while the Wolverines rank 259th.

EAST LANSING – It has been a little less than a year since Mel Tucker made his debut as head coach at Michigan State. “What I remember most about the game was the seven turnovers,” Tucker said. Michigan State looked like a team that had no spring practice under a new staff and didn’t put full pads on until less than a month before the opener. It was a deflating way to start a new era and Michigan State went on to post a 2-5 record in Tucker’s first season. “We have a bad taste in our mouth from when they were here last year with the opportunities to win that game,” Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton said.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Whatever you took away from Michigan’s Houdini act on Saturday, the offense would prefer you remember the first half — not the second. Michigan (4-0) boasted the nation’s top rushing attack ahead of the Rutgers game and only rushed for 112 yards, averaging just 2.9 yards per carry. That number was even worse in the second half, when starting backs Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins struggled to find holes. “Obviously we were happy that we got the (win), but as an o-line we didn’t put our best performance together that second half,” Hayes said. “We didn’t have that same energy, I guess, coming out in the second half.

Don’t tell Michigan defensive end Mike Morris that the Wolverines are big favorites against Rutgers on Saturday. The Wolverines embraced the underdog mentality before the season kicked off Sept. 4, and a dominating 3-0 start hasn’t changed that. “We know as soon as we lose one game, everyone’s gonna be like, ‘Michigan sucks again,’” Morris told reporters outside of Schembechler Hall on Monday. We don’t want that to happen again, so we’re just gonna continue to play with that chip on our shoulder. “I think It is just determination and drive,” Clinkscale said on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show Monday night.
