The Taylor North Little League team defeated a squad from Ohio to take home the Little League World Series title.

Taylor North Little League parents and coaches were all invited out to Comerica Park as a special way for the Detroit Tigers to say congratulations.

“It’s amazing. It’s a once in the lifetime opportunity for these kids,” said Christopher Capobianco.

Jakob Furkas, who will begin his seventh-grade year at Renton Junior High next week, helped Taylor North win the Little League World Series.

It was a different age, a different era and a different world the last time a Michigan team won it all at the Little League World Series. “I always dreamed to play here, I’ve been watching it on TV my whole life,” Taylor North second baseman Gavin Ulin said. “We got to watch a video on (Hamtramck) in the museum and see their picture,” Taylor North coach Rick Thorning said. “When he caught it, I put my hands up and said ‘Let’s go!’” said Taylor North third baseman and hitting hero Jackson Surma. Despite dominating its way through postseason play – outscoring the opposition by an eye-popping 170-10 margin in 14 games – Taylor North entered the unknown at the Little League World Series. Playing in its first postseason since combining the Taylor leagues of Northwest, North Central and Northeast into a single entity, Taylor North has delivered in powerhouse fashion. “We’ve been watching the Little League World Series forever,” Thorning said. Petoskey claimed the Junior (13-14) Little League state tournament Monday, beating Taylor North, 9-2, in the state championship game at the Saginaw Township South Little League field. Meanwhile, starter Gavin Szalkowski shut down Taylor North, which entered the final with an undefeated record. Petoskey, which did not commit an error, took advantage of five Taylor North errors. Taylor North and Petoskey will spend another day in Saginaw. Junior (13-14) Little League state championship game at the Saginaw Township South Little League field. “We knew the situation and knew we couldn’t allow those runs,” Southern coach Nick Stadel said. Grand Rapids Southern and Taylor North remained undefeated after the second day of the Junior (13-14) Little League state tournament Friday at Saginaw Township South Little League. Grand Rapids Southern led 9-2 after two innings on its way to a 13-2 win over Plymouth Canton, while Taylor North used a four-run first inning and five-run fifth inning to beat Quad Cities, 13-3. Travis Eggleston and Carson Boike drove in four runs each to lead Taylor North to Friday’s win. Noah Sand walked twice to lead Macomb, while Gavin Szalkowski walked twice and Hiram Waller-Gross drove in two runs for Petoskey. Swan Valley takes on Taylor North at 3 p.m. before Grand Rapids Southern caps the day with a game at 6 p.m. against Petoskey.
