DETROIT – A driver and a passenger were arrested Thursday after fleeing police in an SUV that was reported stolen out of Farmington Hills, officials said.

Michigan State Police troopers said they learned around 8:45 p.m. Thursday (July 28) that a stolen white 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee had been spotted in the area of Outer Drive and Plymouth Road in Detroit.

The SUV fled from Detroit officers, and state troopers unsuccessfully tried to stop the vehicle twice, according to authorities.

Officials said they backed off and let one trooper continue to follow the SUV.

The driver and passenger abandoned the SUV while going south on Heyden Street from the eastbound I-96 Service Drive, police said. Troopers arrested both without incident, they said.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was recovered, and authorities learned the driver had a felony stolen vehicle warrant out of 67th District Court in Flint.

The driver and passenger were taken to the Detroit Detention Center to await prosecutor review of the case.
