Police address increased number of shootings over Easter weekend in Detroit

DETROIT – The Motor City was victim to an uptick in shootings over the holiday weekend prompting officials with the Detroit Police Department to address the numbers.

“The scenes were spread across the city,” Deputy Chief David LaValley said. “This was a weekend that was out of the norm.”

Saturday shootings

A 51-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were found with fatal gunshot wounds at about 12:30 a.m. at a home in the 8000 block of Rosemont Avenue. Police said two men fled the scene in a white vehicle.

A 38-year-old man was killed at about 2:15 a.m. while sitting in a Chrysler Town & Country in the 8000 block of Michigan Avenue when he was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting.

A 30-year-old man was killed at about 7 p.m. in the 6700 block of Artesian Street when a passenger in a gray Nissan Altima fired about 10 shots into his car, causing him to lost control and hit several parked vehicles.

Easter Sunday shootings

Police received a call at about 2:31 a.m. about a shooting in the 6000 block of Holcomb Avenue. A man was found in the middle of the street with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

A 40-year-old woman was fatally shot in neck at about 5 a.m. in the 10700 block of Balfour Road. A 38-year-old man was also struck in the ankle and was taken to the hospital.

One person was shot in the foot during a robbery at about 5 a.m. on Asbury Park.

A 17-year-old was shot and his 26-year-old brother was grazed by a bullet at about 8:30 p.m. while driving westbound on Lappin Street. Police said a black vehicle pulled up alongside the victims and shots were fired.
