Comcast outage knocks out internet, TV and phone service across U.S.
A massive outage of services provided by Comcast/Xfinity has left millions without internet, phone and TV access, including public safety systems and more. It’s unknown how many customers are without the service, but interruptions have been reported in California, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and more. It’s unclear what caused the issue and Comcast has been unable to say exactly when the service will return. The outage map on the company website says the outage was “unplanned” in Michigan, but also says the issue will be resolved by 11:30 a.m. EST. However, a prior message on the outage map said the issue would be resolved by 10:30 a.m. and that did not happen.

MUSKEGON, MI – The Boys & Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore is home to a new WiFi “Lift Zone” that provides a space for local students to get online, do their homework and engage in digital learning. Comcast partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to bring the free WiFi hot spot to Muskegon this summer. Rey Peña, Muskegon Boys & Girls Club assistant area operations director, said the Lift Zone is “hugely beneficial” for children in the community who might not have internet at home. Comcast launched the Lift Zone program a year ago to provide internet for low-income families at 1,000 community centers across the country. Rey said the service is for “the kids that need us most.”The Boys & Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore Lift Zone will be open for the school year from 2-8 pm.

The profile sent shares of Comcast down more than 3%. Roku stock jumped nearly 5%, while ViacomCBS shares were up 3.8%. Disclosure: Comcast owns NBCUniversal, the parent company of CNBC.

Widespread internet outages hit northeast U.S.

People posting on Twitter reported having issues connecting with various online services in the region stretching from Washington, D.C., to Boston. Comcast, another major internet service provider, said it had not observed problems with its network Tuesday. AT&T said it does not supply home internet in the northeast and customers were not affected.

Detroit Rescue Mission surprised with donations of toys for children, upgraded WiFi for remote learning
DETROIT – The Detroit Rescue Mission’s Genesis House II is doing amazing things for women and children in Detroit without a place to call home. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the shelter could have easily closed, but instead they stayed open and found new ways to help by offering job training, virtual education for children and more. The computer lab upgrade is a part of a Comcast program called Lift Zones, which aims to help bridge the digital divide in Michigan. NBC's video service Peacock stresses 'free,' looks to 2021
So now Peacock, which launches Wednesday, is hoping that blaring free in an ad campaign for the service will entice viewers wary of adding yet another video subscription to their stack, even in todays stay-at-home world. It has a free tier and a $5-a-month paid tier with more video. Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, HBO Max and short-video service Quibi have all launched over the past year. As a Comcast internet customer, she could get Peacock for free, so she did. HBO Max did not reply to a question about its subscriber count since launch.
Comcast, Byron Allen end racial discrimination dispute
Comcast settled a long-running a long-running racial discrimination dispute with black media mogul Byron Allen, agreeing to add three of Allen's channels to its cable packages. Allen sued Comcast for $20 billion in 2015 for refusing to carry seven of his networks, saying it was because of his race. The case made it to the Supreme Court, which in Marc h reversed a lower court ruling in favor of Allen. The Supreme Court said Allen had to show race was the decisive factor in Comcast's decision not to offer him a contract, not one of several factors. Comcast said it would put the full weight of our companys media resources behind highlighting Black voices and Black stories.
Comcast worker shot in drive-by shooting on Detroit’s east side
DETROIT – A Comcast worker was shot while standing on the porch of a home Friday in Detroit, police said. Police initially said the man was in his truck, but later said that wasn’t the case. According to police, the 58-year-old man was at the home in the 20000 block of Rowe Street on the east side at about 4:45 p.m. when a man in a black newer model Dodge Durango drove by and shot at him. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he is listed in temporary serious condition. Locast, a non-profit streaming service, has countersued Disney's ABC, CBS, Fox and Comcast's NBCUniversal, alleging the broadcasters engaged in antitrust conduct and colluded to grow their market power. Their lawsuit named Locast founder David Goodfriend and his non-profit advocacy group, Sports Fans Coalition NY, Inc., which operates the service as the defendants. The case cites an April meeting between executives at YouTube TV, Google's paid streaming service, and Locast. This isn't the first time a streaming service has fought against the networks.

Net Neutrality is the internet’s guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. Big phone and cable companies and their lobbyists filed suit almost as soon as the Net Neutrality rules were adopted. The vote for net neutrality in 2015 was also along party lines, but Democrats dominated then. The attempt to repeal net neutrality has triggered protests from consumer groups and internet companies. Google said in a statement that net neutrality rules "are working well for consumers and we're disappointed in the proposal announced today."
