What some advanced stats may tell us about the NCAA field
(AP Photo/Young Kwak, File)Two years ago, before the start of the last NCAA Tournament, we presented a system that could help narrow down the bracket, using advanced stats from recent seasons. Virginia, one of six teams that passed all of our statistical tests, did in fact win the national championship. The case for Juwan Howard for Coach of the Year
There’s no way to know if Howard is the best coach in men’s college basketball this season. There was skepticism two years ago when Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel hired Howard to replace John Beilein, the program’s all-time winningest coach. Michigan assistant coach Phil Martelli said recently that the word that comes to mind with Howard is respect. “Coach Howard really did a good job of keeping our eyes on the road -- our journey, what we want to do, what goals we want to accomplish,” Livers said. Why Michigan looked so ordinary against Illinois and the lessons it can learn
ANN ARBOR -- Michigan has looked scary good for much of the Big Ten season. Michigan was held to a season low in points, field goal percentage (35 percent), and assists (four). Entering Tuesday, the Wolverines’ season low in 3-point attempts was 13. “It became a two-on-two game,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. Similar adjustments following Tuesday’s game would go a long way in Michigan winning the Big Ten and going deep in the postseason.mlive.com

Isaiah Livers is honest about the type of player he was earlier in his Michigan career. That approach was not going to land Livers his preferred job out of college, and he knew it. “He’s what a two-way player is all about,” Howard said after the Indiana win.
