WMU football adds another Purdue transfer with commitment from DL Bryce Austin
KALAMAZOO, MI – Western Michigan added another former Purdue player to its 2022 football roster, when defensive lineman Bryce Austin announced Friday his intention to transfer to the Broncos for the upcoming season. Austin, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle, revealed his commitment via Twitter, and he will have three years of eligibility at WMU beginning with the 2022 campaign. 53 defensive tackle coming out of high school, according to the 247Sports Composite index, Austin picked Purdue over 29 other scholarship offers, including Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Kentucky, Pitt and Western Michigan. While the Boilermakers lost Austin and Anthony Watts to the transfer portal, they’re expected to bring back every other defensive tackle for the upcoming season. A day after announcing Saturday’s Michigan-Michigan State game would not be played, Michigan announced on Sunday that its next scheduled game, against No. Michigan is 7-6 this season and 1-2 in the Big Ten after Tuesday’s loss at Rutgers. KALAMAZOO, MI – Western Michigan’s defensive backfield received a boost via the transfer portal Friday, when former Purdue cornerback Anthony Romphf announced his commitment to the Broncos via Twitter. The 6-foot, 190-pound Southfield, Mich., native will have three years of immediate eligibility at WMU. But when the Kiffin left for the University of Mississippi, Romphf flipped to Purdue and moved to the defensive backfield. According to 247Sports, he entered the transfer portal on Jan. 1, after Purdue received commitments from two incoming cornerback transfers – Reese Taylor (Indiana) and Tee Denson (Kansas State). Ohio State’s marching band gets special gift from Tom Cruise after ‘Top Gun’ halftime show
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When the Ohio State University Marching Band offered a tribute to the movie “Top Gun” as its halftime show for the Purdue game on Nov. 13, a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. Tuesday, the Twitter account for Ohio State’s Marching Band (@TBDBITL) shared the news that Tom Cruise saw the performance and was so impressed, he offered the band a special thank you. “Dear Band, The Top Gun tribute was fantastic. “Top Gun: Maverick” is due to be released in May, 36 years after the original movie. Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell will return in 2022. The senior from Long Grove, Illinois announced via Twitter that he will return to West Lafayette for another season. MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the total number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Badgers’ football program has increased to 22. Alvarez told ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday that 12 football players and 10 staffers have tested positive. Wisconsin announced Wednesday that six players and six staffers – including head coach Paul Chryst – had tested positive since Oct. 24, the day after its season-opening 45-7 victory over Illinois. School officials updated that number Thursday by saying two more staffers and one additional player had tested positive. The Thursday update indicated the football program had a total of 16 active cases, and that 15 of them had come since Oct. 24.
