Tom Izzo defends Big Ten as NCAA title drought continues: ‘The best league in the country’
NEW YORK – Nobody was asking Tom Izzo about the Big Ten conference after an instant-classic Sweet 16 game on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. Eight conference teams received bids to the tournament, and only Michigan State made it to the Sweet 16. The league’s national title drought has now reached 23 years; the Spartans were the last team to win a title in 2000. “I have no problem standing up and saying we have the best league in the country,” Izzo said. But even with a departure in the Sweet 16, he thought Michigan State’s performance in the tournament showed the Big Ten’s strength, not its weakness.
mlive.comMichigan State’s Tom Izzo ‘felt bad’ watching Purdue suffer historic upset in NCAA Tournament
Michigan State players and staff members were able to tune in just in time to see one of the ending of one of perhaps the most shocking upset in NCAA Tournament history: No. 1 seed Purdue 58, the second time in tournament history that a No. As Tom Izzo watched it play out, though, his reaction was different than that of the majority of Michigan State’s fan base. That will only further the narrative that the Big Ten underperforms in the NCAA Tournament; the conference hasn’t won a national title since Michigan State’s in 2000. Michigan State will hope it can be the team to make a deep run in this tournament.

That presents a potential mismatch for a Michigan State team that’s considerably smaller. “For us, it’s a different team than we’ve played because of the wings,” Izzo said. Izzo is hopeful he’ll be ready for what’s expected to be a large role in Michigan State’s NCAA Tournament opener. I think he’s in a good place.”Izzo and players said USC also stands out for its pace, among the faster in the Pac-12. “He’s got range, he’s got the ultimate green light and he can score from anywhere on the floor,” Michigan State point guard A.J.

mlive.comMichigan State hopes to rise from crowded Big Ten with win over Rutgers at MSG
EAST LANSING – Here’s what’s at stake for Michigan State as it heads to Madison Square Garden for a Saturday game against Rutgers (noon, FOX). Michigan State won the first matchup between the two schools, 70-57, back on Jan. 19 at the Breslin Center thanks to its defense holding the Scarlet Knights to 2-for-17 shooting from 3-point range. Rutgers boasts the Big Ten’s top-rated defense and some of the conference’s best rebounding numbers. Center Clifford Omoruyi leads Rutgers with 13.4 points per game and is third in the Big Ten with 9.9 rebounds per game. Izzo said Michigan State’s focus has been on its offense and fast break, both of which he said has lagged in recent weeks.
mlive.comThe long 2: Why the midrange jumper lives on at Michigan State
EAST LANSING – As Michigan State tried to keep pace with the No. 1 team in the country at Purdue on Sunday, it fell into what’s become a familiar pattern. Hoggard dribbled two steps past the 3-point line and missed a jumper with seven minutes left on the first half. Two possessions later, Tyson Walker pulled up outside of the paint for a jumper. That was followed by a free throw line jumper by Malik Hall and a floater from Walker that was blocked by Purdue’s Zach Edey.

It’s the latest result in what has been an up and down January for the Spartans. How well positioned are the Spartans to navigate the Big Ten gauntlet as the calendar flips to February? Reporters Brandon Champion, Kyle Austin and Matt Wenzel discuss on episode 101 of MLive’s Spartan Confidential podcast. And is there anything else Michigan State could have done to defend Zach Edey?
mlive.comPurdue a unanimous No. 1 in AP Top 25; Vols up to No. 2
Purdue became this season's first unanimous No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll Monday after wins over Michigan and Michigan State last week as chaos ensued behind the Boilermakers among other ranked teams. More than half of Top 25 teams lost, including second-ranked Alabama, which was routed by Oklahoma in the Big 12-SEC Challenge. The Boilermakers (21-1) have won eight straight since a one-point loss to Rutgers on Jan. 2.
news.yahoo.comMichigan State searching for consistency after up-and-down January
And around this time, Tom Izzo starts looking for something specific from his team: consistency, the key ingredient of deep NCAA Tournament runs. Izzo and Michigan State’s players will head into February continuing to look for that consistency. Michigan State followed up a hard-fought home win over Iowa with a lopsided loss at No. While A.J Hoggard scored a team-high 20 points, Izzo still called upon him to do a better job running Michigan State’s offense. Sunday marked an opportunity for Michigan State to win back-to-back games and make a move toward greater consistency.
mlive.comOverheard in the locker room: A split lip and a key 7-point swing in Michigan State’s loss to Purdue
– Disappointed Michigan State players trying to sort out how they came up short has been an all-too-familiar occurrence in the Mackey Arena visitors locker room in recent years. 1 Purdue in the building on Sunday and fifth straight by double digits as they fell, 77-61, on Sunday afternoon. I kind of like playing physical, I like those types of games, and it kind of got me going when they started fouling me, started hacking me. They hit a 3, Edey got to the foul line, and every time we kind of started to chip away Edey got a basket. So it was definitely difficult to get nothing on those possessions when we were in a position like that.”-- Michigan State point guard A.J.
mlive.comWhy Michigan State has reason for optimism in the second half of Big Ten play
Michigan State reached the halfway point of its Big Ten schedule on Thursday by holding on to beat Iowa, 63-61 at home. He immediately scored in double figures, played a key defensive role and helped Michigan State beat a team that had won four out of its last five games. Michigan State will be careful with Hall’s workload going forward not to reinjure him. But his return will give Michigan State a scorer, defender and a veteran who helps others around him be better. “We’re just so glad to have him back,” Spartans point guard A.J.
mlive.comMichigan basketball stinging after another close loss: ‘We know we’re a good team’
Michigan was good, but not quite good enough. These Wolverines believe they are a good team that just hasn’t shown it where it counts the most, in their win-loss record. “If you actually look into the games and not into the box scores, you would see that we’re a really good team that just can’t finish games,” Dickinson said. We know we’re better than what our record says, we know we’re better than what the media says.”While a better finish could have changed the outcome, that wasn’t really Michigan’s problem on Thursday. “We play a lot of really good teams so we’ll have our opportunities,” Baker said.
mlive.comMichigan basketball falls to No. 1 Purdue, misses chance at huge win
The Boilermakers’ 15-0 run gave them a 41-28 lead with three minutes left in the first half. Michigan started the second half with consecutive turnovers and fell behind 46-35. Michigan made nine 3s to Purdue’s five (albeit on 13 more attempts); Michigan had half as many turnovers (just six) as Purdue; Michigan yielded just six offensive rebounds. Edey scored his team’s first seven points, with two early post-ups on Dickinson and an improbable tip-in. Michigan scored the next seven points to close the half and make it 41-35 at the break.

ANN ARBOR -- Jett Howard thinks he’s going to play for Michigan against Purdue on Thursday. “In Jett’s mind, he’s saying he’s going to play,” head coach Juwan Howard said with a laugh on Wednesday in a video conference call. Now, Michigan State is hopeful to be back at full strength for the stretch run of the season. “We thought the tunnel was closed.”For the immediate future, though, nothing has changed: Michigan State won’t have Hall for a Thursday game against No. To bridge the gap until Hall’s hopeful return, Michigan State will get as much out of its starting lineup as it can. But while Michigan State fights through late January while shorthanded, it can now hope to get to full strength again this season.
