Mother digs for evidence after son killed, burned in field

A Detroit mother said her pain won't go away until she has answers in her son's murder case.

Roberto Ayala was shot multiple times Oct. 30, 2018, on Poplar Street on Detroit's west side, and his body was set on fire, officials said. In the months since, his mother has been working to gather new evidence police might have missed.

Taylor shooting

Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot multiple times in Taylor. According to authorities, the shooting happened at about 9 a.m. Friday in the 6700 block of McGuire Street near Ecorse Road, just south of I-94. A mother of three who lives in the area witnessed the shooting from her window and told her 4-year-old son to hide.

Detroit shooting

A 61-year-old woman shot a man who was trying to steal her car Friday morning on the city's west side.

The shooting happened in the 14000 block of Coyle Street just before 2:30 a.m. The woman told police she heard some noises outside her house and, when she went to look, she found a 49-year-old man attempting to steal her car.

Sterling Heights homicide

Jim Sanderson retired as a criminal investigator, but that hasn't stopped him from investigating the death of his brother. Sanderson has conducted his own investigation and is releasing his findings in a new book. 

Sterling Heights has never been the kind of place where someone would expect a triple homicide, but it happened in April 1985 off 14 Mile Road. Sanderson worked as an investigator for the IRS at the time.

A former Detroit police officer is facing two new lawsuits, one of them involving allegations of police brutality.

It’s round two of the former Detroit police Officer Gary Steele’s soap opera. A video recorded in May of 2018 allegedly showed Steele, who is accused of breaking Elaine Murriel’s arm while trying to arrest her after she got into an argument with the girlfriend of her son’s father.
