MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A new ALDI store is coming to a busy area of Muskegon County. The discount grocery store is planned for an old Plumb’s store on Apple Avenue near U.S. 31 in Muskegon Township. The township planning commission has approved a site plan amendment that includes the demolition of 3,000 square feet of the former grocery store building. ALDI is a discount grocery store chain that increases shoppers’ savings by having them bring their own bags and insert a quarter to get a cart that is refunded when the cart is returned. Currently, there are ALDI stores on Henry Street and East Sternberg Road in Muskegon County.

FENTON, MI – An Owen Road property next door to Target in Fenton will be home to a new Aldi’s after the supermarket closed a purchase agreement with Fenton Area Public Schools. The school district entered a purchase agreement with developer Keystone Reality around 2015, Superintendent Heidie Ciesielski told MLive-The Flint Journal. Aldi’s told the district it hopes to be operational by Thanksgiving of 2023, Ciesielski said. A site plan for the development was approved in August 2022, Fenton City Manager Lynn Markland confirmed with the Journal. The seven-year delay took place for multiple reasons including approval to share the same entrance as Target and several other businesses, the green light from Aldi’s after closing on another supermarket across the country, and typical processes through the Fenton planning commission.

MUSKEGON, MI - The Lakeshore Art Festival, in partnership with the Muskegon Museum of Art, is organizing a summer exhibition for local artists to showcase their best work in downtown Muskegon. The artwork will incorporate a small boulder or rock that will be on display downtown Muskegon beginning June 24. “We cannot wait to bring the community together through the multiple components of the #LARocks Project,” said Bre McCarthy, co-director of the Lakeshore Art Festival. Artists will be responsible for picking up their boulder on April 21 and delivering the completed piece by June 19. In addition to the exhibition, the general public will be invited to participate in the #LARocks project during the Lakeshore Art Festival on June 24-25, where Muskegon Museum of Art will be hosting a rock decorating booth in the Western Avenue roundabout.

MUSKEGON, MI - A new CEO will take the reins at Muskegon YMCA when longtime leader Bruce Spoelman retires after 24 years with the organization, including 19 in Muskegon. The Muskegon YMCA Board announced Wednesday, March 1 that it appointed Gabrielle (Gabe) Gerlach as the new CEO, effective March 6. Gerlach, chief operating officer for the Muskegon Y, joined the organization in 2017 as the associate executive director. “Gabe is a highly experienced, successful and well-regarded leader within our organization and community,” said Kristen Wade, chief volunteer officer on the Muskegon Y Board, according to the news release. WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI - The Ypsilanti area could be getting its second ALDI supermarket through a real estate deal with Ypsilanti Township. OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A man was killed and a woman critically injured Monday, Aug. 16, in a crash on Ottawa Beach Road by the Ottawa County Fairgrounds. The crash happened around 5:50 p.m, Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies said. Police said that a 22-year-old Holland woman was driving east on Ottawa Beach Road when she made an ‘abrupt U turn.’ Her car was struck by a westbound sport-utility vehicle.
