A's edge O's before smallest home crowd in nearly 42 years

Seth Brown hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, Cristian Pache made another spectacular defensive play and Oakland beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on Tuesday night before the Athletics’ smallest home crowd in 42 years. A day after their lowest attendance for a home opener without coronavirus restrictions in more than 30 years, the A’s drew a crowd of 3,748 — the smallest with fans at the Coliseum since 3,180 attended a 6-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 25, 1980. Elvis Andrus and Christian Bethancourt both had two hits and scored to help Oakland to its seventh win in 10 games after an 0-2 start.

Jeremy Giambi, a former major league outfielder and first baseman, died Wednesday at his parents' home in Southern California, police and his agent said. Officers responding around 11:30 a.m. to reports of a medical emergency found Giambi dead at the residence in Claremont, east of Los Angeles, said police Lt. Robert Ewing. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death, Ewing said.

Eastern Michigan University to rename College of Engineering and Technology after philanthropic alumni group

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University announced it will be renaming its engineering and technology college in recognition of alumni group GameAbove, which has donated a total of $20 million toward student- and faculty-based initiatives over the past 15 months. The GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology name will go into effect on March 1. “The College of Engineering and Technology has a strong reputation. We greatly value GameAbove’s exceptional support of Eastern Michigan University students and faculty.”AdDean of the College of Engineering and Technology, Mohamad Qatu, said the group’s support has helped to “dramatically accelerate” the school’s ability to serve its students. MHSAA: Michigan high school spring sports can start practice March 22, compete March 26

Michigan high school spring sports programs can begin practice on March 22 and competition on March 26, the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced Monday. This is a delay of one week to the start of spring practices and competitions, the MHSAA said. Moreover, MHSAA said 74 percent of its member high schools favored a delay in springs sports activity for at least a week. The entire Michigan high school spring sports season was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. However, the MHSAA Council said it approved an allowance for spring teams to meet for voluntary practices over 16 contact days this past September and October.

Former Michigan State University basketball walk-on donates $32 million to school

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University athletics received millions of dollars in a major donation from one of its winningest basketball players, on and off the court. Mat Ishbia -- the CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage, 1998 Spartan basketball walk-on and 2000 NCAA champion -- recently donated $32 million to his alma mater. Twenty million dollars of the donation will help change the face of Michigan State, expanding the football center and improving the auditorium, locker rooms and dining halls. “This is not only a historic day but a tear-jerking, proud day for me,” said MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo. Ishbia also made a donation to the Spartan Life Fund, which helps MSU alumni connect with companies looking for employees.

11 University of Michigan student athletes test positive for COVID this week, officials say

The University of Michigan Athletic Department says out of 3,215 COVID tests administered within the community this week, 11 student athletes have tested positive. School officials said some of those who tested positive for the B117 variant are people involved in the Athletic Department. It is currently unclear if the 11 U-M students have tested positive for the B117 strain or a different strain. AdSo far, the COVID vaccines currently circulating appear to be effective against the B117 virus strain. MDHHS sent University of Michigan officials a memo explaining our recommendations, but has not issued any orders for the university to take any actions.

WeRun313 running club aims to connect with Black runners in Detroit, gives away running shoes

DETROIT – WeRun313, a Detroit running club aiming to connect Black runners and help grow the sport in the community, is taking a new step to help their mission. “We Run 313 is a social run club that connects like-minded individuals, through running to build a healthier and happy community,” said co-founder Lance Woods. Woods, who started the club with Joe Robinson, said the club’s mission defines its motto -- “Connect. Joe and I noticed that a lot of people weren’t running in proper running shoes,” Woods said. Robinson said, “Today (Tuesday), WeRun313 has linked up with Playmakers Fit and we come together to give away about 150 pairs of shoes, running shoes."

Fall sports canceled for Northern, Grand Valley State, Wayne State, more Michigan universities due to virus

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) announced Wednesday that all fall sports are suspended until 2021 amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. A number of Michigan colleges and universities are impacted by the conferences suspension: Davenport University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University and Wayne State University. Plans to provide fall teams with competition opportunities during the spring semester are a priority for the league. Other GLIAC member schools include: Ashland University, Purdue University Northwest and the University of Wisconsin Parkside. The MAC is among the leagues hoping to play some semblance of a season in the spring, depending on the state of the pandemic.
