Detroit Lions exercise fifth-year option on T.J. Hockenson’s rookie contract

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have exercised the fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson’s rookie contract, an expected move given his growing import to the offense. “(If a long-term extension) doesn’t happen, then we would have an intention to get that fifth-year option done,” Holmes said. The decision is an obvious one now, although Hockenson’s arrival in Detroit was a bumpy one back in 2019. He was taken with the eighth overall pick, then immediately booed at the Lions’ own draft party inside team headquarters. Teams don’t usually take tight ends in the first round, much less the top 10, and here were the Lions -- already the leader in first-round tight ends over the last decade -- doing it yet again, and in the top 10 no less.

Patriots’ Bill Belichick: Matt Patricia is a great coach, will work with offense next season

“Broad role,” New England head coach Matt Patricia explained of his presence. But it seems Patricia was hired to be an admin guy last season, before transitioning to more of a coaching role next season. Patricia was eventually hired by former Lions general manager Bob Quinn -- another former Patriot -- to become Detroit’s head coach in 2018. “I think a good coach is a good coach, and Matt’s a great coach, Joe’s a great coach. “Yeah, he does a lot of things,” Belichick said.

Now Hamp is adding some national-level duties to her plate at USA Football. “We are pleased to have Sheila join our USA Football family as a board member,” USA Football CEO and executive director Scott Hallenbeck said in a statement.

Report: Lions create $1 million in cap space by restructuring Halapoulivaati Vaitai’s deal

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have reportedly converted $1.335 million of Halapoulivaati Vaitai’s salary into a signing bonus, creating $1 million in space for the rest of the season. Vaitai’s marks on the ground aren’t great from the analytics site, but it’s hard to ignore the success of the rushing attack behind that offensive line. Detroit can get out of the deal for just $4.2 million in 2022, $2.8 million in 2023 and $1.4 million in 2024. The group has climbed 10 spots in PFF’s offensive line rankings, slotting 15th heading into the final two games. “I think (offensive line coach) Hank (Fraley) ‘s got a lot to do with that.

Detroit Lions release Jamie Collins after trying to find trade partner for veteran linebacker

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have released Jamie Collins after failing to find a trade partner for the veteran linebacker. Collins was held out of practice and the team’s Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens while the Lions publicly tried to trade him. There again, we felt like it was time to move on.”Derrick Barnes and Jalen Reeves-Maybin saw increased work at linebacker with Collins out of the picture. I thought Barnes was solid. ALLEN PARK -- Bob Quinn is back in football, and not all that far from his old job either. The former Detroit Lions general manager has been hired by the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network. Quinn was hired as Detroit’s general manager in 2016 and served parts of five seasons in the role. Brad Holmes replaced Quinn as general manager, while Dan Campbell succeeded Patricia as head coach. T.J. Hockenson doubled his production in Year 2. The Lions are looking for even bigger things in Year 3.

“Yeah, I think he’s enjoyed himself the last few months,” Detroit Lions tight ends coach Ben Johnson said with a smile. At the same time, he’s going to have fun. He’s going to play hard too. All ranked among the league leaders for tight ends, and he he became the first Lions tight end to qualify for the Pro Bowl since David Sloan in 1999. And I think he’s embraced that.

Detroit Lions in early stages of considering uniform change for 2022

ALLEN PARK -- Matthew Stafford, Darius Slay, Ezekiel Ansah and Ameer Abdullah were the stars of the Detroit Lions’ last uniform rollout. The Lions are eligible to redesign their uniforms in 2022, and they’ve already begun to kick around the idea. Do we continue with the color rush, etc.? They updated their leaping lion logo, changed their font and introduced an all-grey color rush uniform. It seems that could happen as soon as 2022, although it’ll be a while before any final decisions are made.

Lions’ Halapoulivaati Vaitai struggled after signing his big free-agent deal. Now his position change could stick.

The Lions let top guard Graham Glasgow walk in free agency last year because they didn’t want to spend big on an interior offensive lineman. He went on to split his limited time on the field at right guard and right tackle. Of course, versatility is an attractive quality in an offensive lineman. The Lions turned to Tyrell Crosby at right tackle for most of last season, and Crosby is back too. 1 offensive lineman in the country according to PFF.

Ex-Lions WR Kenny Golladay reportedly signing four-year, $72 million deal with Giants

ALLEN PARK -- Kenny Golladay was the best draft pick of the Bob Quinn era. Now he’s out in Detroit too, agreeing to a four-year, $72 million contract with the New York Giants according to multiple reports. The deal includes $40 million in guarantees and is worth up to $76 million including incentives. That works out to $18 million per year, which makes Golladay the highest-paid receiver in free agency. Quinn’s best draft picks usually came in the first round, but Golladay proved to be one of the few Day 3 guys who actually panned out.

Detroit Lions continue to dismantle last year’s free-agent class by cutting Chase Daniel, Danny Shelton

ALLEN PARK -- This time last year, Bob Quinn was putting together a free-agent class that he thought was finally going to push the Detroit Lions over the top. The most recent purges are quarterback Chase Daniel and defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who are getting released in the aftermath of Romeo Okwara’s big free-agent deal according to NFL Network. Detroit Lions continue to cut costs by releasing TE Jesse James

ALLEN PARK -- Jesse James was one of the worst signings of the Bob Quinn era. The Lions have decided to release James, according to ESPN, as they continue to trim costs heading into free agency next week. Detroit isn’t saving that much money by cutting James -- about $2.1 million, while taking on about $4.3 million in dead money -- but he just wasn’t that good. The Lions were desperate for tight ends back in 2019 and inked James to a four-year, $22.6 million deal. With that, James will go down as one of the worst signings of the Bob Quinn era.

Detroit Lions reportedly will not use franchise tag on Kenny Golladay

ALLEN PARK -- Kenny Golladay was the best draft pick of the Bob Quinn era. The Lions have told Golladay they will not use the franchise tag on him before today’s deadline, according to multiple reports. That means short of coming to terms on a long-term deal, Golladay will be playing somewhere else next season. Golladay was selected by former Lions general manager Bob Quinn in the third round of the 2017 draft. If Golladay signs somewhere else -- and that is the likeliest outcome now -- the Lions will have moved into a much better place financially.

ALLEN PARK -- Free agency opens next week, and the Detroit Lions have a lot of work to do to put a competitive product on the field. D’Andre Swift is the future at running back, and the Lions need to find him better support than that. ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are down to a matter of hours to use the franchise tag on Kenny Golladay. A lot has happened since, including injuries to his hip and hamstring that limited Golladay to just five games last season. The franchise tag is still available to secure Golladay’s return, or at least retain his rights for a trade, although time is running out on that front as well. Short of that, the Lions are down to a matter of hours to guarantee Golladay’s return to Detroit. The Giants also plan to use the franchise tag on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, according to multiple reports.

Detroit Lions reportedly trying to trade backup QB Chase Daniel

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have put another quarterback on the trade block, this time shopping Chase Daniel according to ESPN. Daniel signed a three-year, $13.05 million deal with Detroit just last offseason. Now change is afoot at the quarterback position, where Detroit has already agreed to send Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. The trade cannot be finalized until March 17, but the Lions will receive a third-round pick this year, a first-round pick next year and another first-round pick in 2022. Goff will count $27.8 million against the cap, in addition to the $17.8 million worth of dead money wrapped up in Stafford.

He previously was the director of player personnel before getting promoted to vice president of player personnel, essentially serving as Quinn’s right-hand man. He began as a public relations intern in 2003 and moved into scouting the following year as a scouting assistant. Lions Hire Brad Holmes As New GM

The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with Brad Holmes to be their general manager, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Holmes led the Rams’ college scouting department for eight years and started his 18-year career with them as a public relations intern in 2003. Holmes had a second interview in Detroit on Wednesday, meeting with the franchise’s leaders in person, and was impressive enough to land the job. The Lions reached double digits in losses in 2020 for the third straight season and 13th time this century. Detroit will have to rebuild through the draft, a key reason why the Lions see Holmes as a fit for the long-suffering franchise.

Darrell Bevell is pumped about the opportunity to coach the Detroit Lions, and quarterback Matthew Stafford sounds relaxed and ready for these last few games of the season — no matter what the future holds after that. “I hate the circumstances with which it happened, but it’s an opportunity,” said Bevell, who is now Detroit’s interim coach. He was promoted to interim coach when Detroit fired coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn over the weekend. Bevell clearly wants his team to have fun during these last few weeks of the regular season, and Stafford is focused on the short term as well. KEY NUMBER11 — That’s the number of coaches, including Bevell, the Lions have had since they last won a playoff game during the 1991 season.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford upbeat amid another coaching change, not discussing future

Bevell has never been a head coach and admittedly said he was “jacked” for the opportunity to lead the Lions over the final five games. Stafford, who has played for three head coaches and three general managers in 12 seasons, spoke with reporters via Zoom on Monday. He called it a “tough situation for everybody” before digging into his first impressions of Bevell in the head position. Stafford got it clicking to new levels in eight games under Bevell last season, but it hasn’t been the same this year. While Stafford remains focused on the task at hand, he’s not ready to talk about his future just yet.

Inside Sheila Ford Hamp’s decision to fire Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn right now: ‘It clearly wasn’t working’

Hamp was joined by Wood and Bevell in announcing the moves to players during a Zoom call on Saturday afternoon. Hamp did not narrow the pool at all during repeated questioning, including saying a college coach could be in play. No matter what happens, the Lions’ first-year owner has already ignited the organization’s largest shakeup in at least two decades.

Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn fired by Detroit Lions

After getting blown out 41-25 on Thanksgiving against Houston, the Detroit Lions decided they had seen enough and fired Patricia just halfway through a five-year contract. General manager Bob Quinn, the man who hired Patricia, was also fired. Patricia becomes the first head coach fired by Detroit midseason since Steve Mariucci in 2005. A day later, Quinn fired him in a move that sent a clear message that the bar had been raised in Detroit. “It’s a bunch of trash.”While players believed they were close under Caldwell, Patricia never viewed the job that way.

Ask Kyle: Did the Lions blow it by not taking Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert?

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions hired Matt Patricia because winning nine games was no longer good enough. Quinn said the right things about considering all positions at third overall, but a quarterback was never seriously in play. Some would tell you there’s a small chance they retain Bob Quinn while firing Patricia, but I don’t think that happens either. Quinn is on his second head coach, whiffed on him badly it seems, and I don’t think he gets a swing at a third. -- @ButlerKABA: I don’t think Hockenson is in that kind of stratosphere yet, but he’s trending up in a big hurry.
