U.S. health officials are warning the public not to eat certain brands of packaged salads, which they say are linked to two small, long-running listeria outbreaks in which three people died, including one person in Michigan.

The projects subject to recall have the establishment number EST. P-7089 on the product back or inside the USDA mark of inspection. The items were shipped nationwide to retailers, hospitals, nursing facilities, restaurants, schools and Department of Defense locations.

Chicken processing company makes recall
The original recall included an undetermined amount of ready-to-eat poultry products including frozen cooked, diced, or shredded chicken distributed by brands including Butterball, Perdue, and Sysco. A listeria infection may result in brain or bloodstream infection and can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of the infection include fever and diarrhea, muscle aches, and headache. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has released a full list of possibly affected retailers in their updated recall alert. Any chicken product that falls under the recall should be thrown away or returned to the place where it was purchased.
135,810 pounds of poultry products recalled due to possible listeria contamination
DETROIT - About 135,810 pounds of poultry products have been recalled due to the risk that they have been contaminated with listeria, officials said. The products affected by the recall have the establishment number P-17453 inside the USDA mark of inspection or on the case, company officials said. Affected products were shipped nationwide to hotels, restaurants and institutions. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered the problem Saturday when a sample product tested positive for the presence of listeria monocytogenes. Anyone who consumes contaminated food could get a serious infection.

Affected products include butternut squash, cauliflower, zucchini and vegetable bowls manufactured by Growers Express that were distributed primarily to grocery stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maine. According to the Growers Express website, Butternut Squash Spirals from Trader Joe's in Michigan are affected. No frozen or canned vegetables have been recalled. Growers Express officials said it is sanitizing its factory and equipment.
