NIKO GOODRUM

Niko Goodrum among 3 former Tigers dropped from rosters on Thursday

Most notably, longtime Tigers utility man Niko Goodrum was designated by the Houston Astros on Thursday. Goodrum, 30, played regularly for the Tigers in a variety of roles from 2018-2021 hitting .232 with a .707 OPS (90 OPS+) in 376 games. Assuming he clears waivers, Goodrum is likely to remain in the Astros system for the remainder of the year but he wonโ€™t be part of the clubโ€™s playoff run. Another well-liked, one-time Tigers prospect was dropped from the 40-man roster by the Cleveland Guardians. McKay, 27, logged 19 innings for the Tigers in 2019 after being claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and started the COVID-shortened 2020 season on the Tigersโ€™ roster before being demoted and then DFAโ€™d.

Mr. Versatility with Detroit Tigers, Niko Goodrum loses his big-league spot

Niko Goodrum spent four seasons as a do-it-all player in the field for the Detroit Tigers. Struggling at the plate this spring in his first season with the Houston Astros, Goodrum will now have to earn his way back to the big leagues. Goodrum batted just .116 with two doubles and one RBI in 15 games with the AL West-leading Astros. After signing as a free agent with the Tigers prior to the 2018 season, Goodrum played every position in the field except pitcher and catcher. Detroit granted Goodrum his free agency after last season, when he batted .214 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs in 90 games.

HOUSTON -- When Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Goodrum spent the last four seasons with the Tigers before signing with the Astros as a free agent over the winter. His job is basically the same as the old one: Play wherever heโ€™s needed on any given day. I had an amazing four years.โ€After the Tigers cut him loose, nearly a dozen teams made inquiries (including the Astros). โ€œThey both have a joy that they play with every day,โ€ Goodrum said.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson suspended, will miss first 2 games of season-opening series vs. Tigers

The Chicago White Sox will be without a key player when they open their season against the Detroit Tigers. Shortstop Tim Anderson will serve a two-game suspension when the season starts at Comerica Park in Detroit on April 8. The suspension stems from an incident in the ninth inning of a game on Sept. 27, 2021, in which he made contact with umpire Tim Timmons. As a result, Anderson will also miss the White Sox-Tigers game on April 9 before returning for the series finale. Anderson pushed back, not knowing it was an umpire who had pushed him.

Report: Astros signing former Tigers infielder Niko Goodrum

The Detroit Tigers will be without fan favorite Niko Goodrum this season after he reportedly signed with the Houston Astros.

3 former Tigers infielders sign with new teams Saturday

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Three former Detroit Tigers infielders, including recent utility man Niko Goodrum, signed with new clubs amid a flurry of moves on Saturday night. Goodrum, who spent the last four seasons with the Tigers, signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal with the Houston Astros, according to MLB Networkโ€™s Jon Heyman. He would have made around $3 million in arbitration if the Tigers had extended him a contract. Over the next four seasons, Goodrum played regularly at second and shortstop while serving at times as a super-utility player. Shortstop Jose Iglesias, who played for the Tigers from 2013-2018, signed a one-year deal with the Colorado Rockies.

mlive.com

Niko Goodrum gave the Tigers 4 solid years. He deserves a tip of the cap as he departs.

As the Detroit Tigers welcomed youngsters Kody Clemens and Angel De Jesus to the 40-man roster on Friday, veteran infielder Niko Goodrum was largely overlooked. If the Tigers have a couple of injuries and Goodrum is still unsigned in February, maybe a reunion will happen sooner than later. And good utility men are like good backup catchers. He got an extended look at shortstop and did really, really well. Goodrum, who had started the season reasonably well, finished with a .150 average and .489 OPS in his final 29 games.

Whoโ€™s at fault in Tigers-Sox feud? It depends on what jersey youโ€™re wearing.

On Monday, the Tigers and White Sox had a bench-clearing fracas after rookie pitcher Alex Lange hit Sox slugger Jose Abreu with a 97 mph fastball. Sox fans insist it was Goodrum who provoked an innocent Abreu, who had just executed a hard but legal slide. Hinch noted on Monday -- not as a threat, but as a simple statement of fact -- that the White Sox have more to lose than the Tigers. The White Sox are headed for the playoffs. And even the slight risk of it happening should be enough for the White Sox to hold off on any retaliation until 2022.

How 2 coaching decisions cost Detroit Lions, Tigers just minutes apart on Sunday

The Detroit Lions and Tigers were both burned by costly late coaching decisions on Sunday, and both teams lost on the final play of their games.

So long, Victor Reyes? Not so fast. Longtime Tigers outfielder has made a case to stick around.

DETROIT -- After Sundayโ€™s game, members of the Detroit Tigers greeted a preselected group of fans on the field, took off their jerseys and handed them over as a gift. For much of the season, it seemed certain that outfielder Victor Reyes would appear on this list. Then, finally getting an extended opportunity in Detroit when veteran outfielder Nomar Mazara was released after the All-Star break, Reyes hit some more. Unlike Mazara, Reyes has options, meaning he can be freely transferred back and forth from Detroit to Toledo. Hinch said of Reyesโ€™ season.

Tigers cut veteran pitcher Erasmo Ramirez to bring up rookie reliever

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers designated veteran pitcher Erasmo Ramirez for assignment before Fridayโ€™s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 1-1 with a 5.74 ERA in 26 2/3 innings with the big-league club, walking five and striking out 20. Tigers have 11 players on injured list: See whoโ€™s coming back when

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have 11 players on the injured list, four of whom should be back fairly soon and four more who are likely to be back in September. Thatโ€™s where it gets fairly complicated, as the Tigers donโ€™t have space for eight players right now. The Tigers can also extend rehab outings to their maximum length while deciding what to do. Outfielder Akil Baddoo (concussion) will be eligible to come off the 7-day concussion injured list on Wednesday. He had very low velocity during a recent live BP session in Lakeland and the Tigers arenโ€™t comfortable sending him on a rehab assignment.

CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Tigers will have a tough decision to make after Sundayโ€™s game. Niko Goodrum has completed his rehab assignment and will join the Tigers when they open a three-gam series at Baltimore on Tuesday. If there was any talk of Goodrum being the odd man out, the Tigers never shared it publicly. Looking ahead: Miguel Cabrera is off on Sunday, which he means heโ€™s very likely to go to Baltimore still at 498 home runs. After three games at Baltimore, the Tigers return to Detroit for a six-game homestand beginning Aug. 13, so there remains a good shot that he will reach 500 home runs at Comerica Park.

Tigers mailbag: Where does Willi Castro fit in future plans?

CLEVELAND -- By the time youโ€™re reading this, Willi Castro might be back in Toledo. The Tigers have a series of decisions to make in the coming days as players return from injuries. Q: For the life of me, I cannot understand what the Tigersโ€™ front office sees in Willi Castro.
