After surprising start, Detroit Tigers quickly fading from playoff picture
DETROIT Less than a week ago, the Detroit Tigers were four games above .500, in first place in the AL Central Division and multiple games ahead of the other wildcard contenders. After two disappointing losses to the Chicago White Sox and another sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, the Tigers have a losing record and sit outside the current playoff picture. The slide began with Matt Boyd handing back a hard-earned lead against the White Sox on Wednesday. As it stands, the Tigers have lost 20 straight games to the Indians -- a stunning streak for a Major League Baseball team. But losing five in a row erased that cushion, and now theyre forced to win against legitimate playoff teams.

Can Detroit Tigers bounce back from deflating loss or is this beginning of long slide?
DETROIT The first three weeks of this Detroit Tigers season have been unexpectedly fun. No moment has been more exciting than Wednesdays fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox. In the next 10 games, the Tigers will bookend a four-game series against the White Sox with two three-game series against the Cleveland Indians. The feeling in that clubhouse if they would have stolen a game from the White Sox on the backs of Greiner and Castro would be special. Losing eight of the next 10 against the Indians and White Sox would be a crippling blow, especially with 11 games against the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs on the horizon.
The Detroit Tigers are in the playoff hunt -- its time for management to start acting like it

Detroit Tigers appear to have current, future bullpen ace in Gregory Soto
DETROIT There was a moment in Monday nights win over the Chicago White Sox that felt like a fork in the road for the Detroit Tigers season. Gregory Soto #65 of the Detroit Tigers pitches during the game against the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park on July 31, 2020 in Detroit, Michigan. Soto showed flashes of his potential as a rookie, but nothing like what hes doing so far in 2020. Detroit Tigers took care of early business, but now well see if they can really compete
DETROIT With more than one-fifth of the full schedule in the books, the Detroit Tigers have one of the best records in the entire American League. In the Tigers defense, they can only play the games on their schedule, and they more or less took advantage of those first 13 games. The way the Tigers have played so far suggests theyre the best of all the really bad teams. Looking forward, this weeks series with the White Sox is extremely important. Not only do the White Sox appear to have the best roster of that middling tier, they also play the Tigers 10 times during this stretch.

PITTSBURGH Spencer Turnbull pitched seven strong innings and Miguel Cabrera singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth as the Detroit Tigers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Sunday to sweep the three-game series. Theres no reason for Detroit Tigers to delay Casey Mize any longer
DETROIT Say what you want about the last three years of Detroit Tigers baseball, but beneath the losing records and long, painful summers, theyve done a lot of things right during this rebuild. Detroit Tigers coaches look on and watch as Casey Mize #74 of the Detroit Tigers warms up in the bullpen during the Detroit Tigers Summer Workouts at Comerica Park on July 14, 2020 in Detroit, Michigan. Due to the shortened season, Mize only needed to be off the roster for about a week to remain under team control for an additional year. But Mize isnt getting any game experience right now because COVID-19 wiped out the minor league season. MLB looks to shorter doubleheaders to ease scheduling chaos
(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)The Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds were the first teams to try out baseballs new time-saving measure a doubleheader with seven-inning games. By the end of the night Sunday, 12 teams had played 10 games, but six had played seven or fewer. Making doubleheader games seven innings long can help, at least in theory. You can use your bullpen a lot different, earlier in the game and try to get through that part. But last year, there were only 33 doubleheaders total, and the New York Yankees led the way with seven.

Tigers: Detroit has Monday off, then is scheduled to host four games in three days against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Detroit Tigers prove superior in comeback win against Kansas City
DETROIT From getting blown out in the home opener to getting two wins in a row against the Kansas City Royals, the Tigers seem to have the better hand getting majority series wins against the Royals. At that point the only run the Tigers were able to get was a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schoop to put them on the board but still down 4-1. It wasnt until the bottom of the 5th-inning that it was time to tie it up for the home team. Hes been swinging a good, short swing and on the whole field driving the baseball. Tomorrow night it will be Ivan Nova on the mound for the Tigers but will also be the last game of the series against Kansas City.

Heres what it would realistically take for Detroit Tigers to compete for playoff spot this season
The Detroit Tigers are the ultimate case study. To have any chance to compete, the Tigers would need to do something like this:15-8 against the Royals, Pirates and White Sox. White Sox have to bustThe Tigers need the White Sox -- this years darling sleeper in the American League -- to be a disappointment. Robles works out with Nats, Tigers tab Boyd opening starter
The defending World Series champion Washington Nationals are happy to have their starting center fielder finally in camp and the Detroit Tigers have named their opening day starter. It was definitely very difficult, the fact that I really wasnt able to work much on my swing, Robles said through an interpreter. Pitcher Anthony Bass said Sunday the players have told general manager Ross Atkins theyd prefer to play in a big league stadium if possible. So have Milwaukee first baseman Logan Morrison, Cincinnati pitcher Nate Jones, Tampa Bay pitcher Aaron Loup and New York Yankees pitcher Luis Aviln.
Short season could give rebuilding Detroit Tigers a shot
DETROIT On their way to 114 defeats last year, the Detroit Tigers actually won seven of their first 10 games, and they were still 12-10 in late April. With only 60 games on tap for 2020, the rebuilding Tigers could be in a position to benefit from a high-variance sprint through the regular season. If Detroit can overachieve for a couple months, the Tigers might actually have a shot at a postseason berth -- a possibility that would have been awfully remote in a 162-game season. It was just such a cool moment in my life, to be able to hit batting practice on a big league field, Torkelson said recently. VERSATILENiko Goodrum can do a little of everything for the Tigers, having played every position but pitcher and catcher last year.
Giants return, so do some players, but Padres' INF Mateo out
San Diego announced last week that outfielder Tommy Pham tested positive for coronavirus and was asymptomatic. The Giants, meanwhile, resumed workouts at Oracle Park after receiving test results from Saturday, all of which were negative for players and staff. The only Texas players still not cleared to participate are right fielder Joey Gallo and left-hander Brett Martin, both of whom tested positive for coronavirus. Baseball scrambles back into action amid lingering concerns
As baseball scrambles to start an abbreviated season, the prevailing mood is one of nervous excitement. All of these issues could become moot if there's a major outbreak of the virus within baseball. "Ive seen the reports in Houston how COVIDs going up so Im going to have to really be careful. It will be unusual following new safety protocols that are at times incompatible with human nature on the baseball field. Theyre very focused on that and the staff thats going to be associated with the games once we fire up, Crane said.
