A.J. Hinch explains first Tigers’ ejection: ‘That’s the definition of bull (expletive)’
DETROIT -- In 2018, Ron Gardenhire got ejected in his first game as Detroit Tigers manager. While Gardenhire needed just one game to earn his first Tigers’ ejection, it took Hinch until Game No. “It’s unacceptable and I thought it was handled wrong,” Hinch said. Then he tosses me out of the game,” Hinch said. “That’s the definition of bull(expletive)...It was handled wrong at the beginning and it was handled wrong at the end, but unfortunately that’s the way it played out.”The Tigers eventually coughed up a 10-2 lead and lost 13-10 to get swept by the Angels.mlive.com
Miguel Cabrera will start at first base on Opening Day
Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera will start at first base on Opening Day, marking the first time he has played in the field since June 18, 2019. Hinch revealed the news on Tuesday, a few hours before the Tigers played their final spring training game of the season in Lakeland, Fla. “I think he gives us the best chance to win (playing) first base,” Hinch said. Even in 2018 and 2019, then-manager Ron Gardenhire would sometimes avoid playing Cabrera in the field during chilly weather. Cabrera has frequently expressed his desire to see more action in the field rather than work exclusively as a DH.mlive.com
Tigers have plan to ease Miguel Cabrera in at first base
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera will play some games at first base eventually this spring, but it won’t happen in the first few days of the Grapefruit League. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the Tigers are limiting the defensive workload for Cabrera, who turns 38 in April. Cabrera will get some work at first base eventually. Both the Tigers star and his new manager seem committed to letting him play in the field at least occasionally in 2021.mlive.com
Takeaways from Day 1 at Tiger Town: ‘It’s tone-setting time’
But if it’s difficult to draw conclusions from a normal spring day, it’s an exercise in utter futility in 2021. #TigersST pic.twitter.com/BXrB7iD89M — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) February 23, 2021**Even so, it was the first day of the A.J. pic.twitter.com/RZYGMy1eyi — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) February 23, 2021**Before we get to what we saw on Day 1, let’s cover what we didn’t see. It’s fun to watch him take batting practice, as he can hit the ball a long, long way with seemingly little effort. Although he only just turned 23 years old, he’s long since fallen off the top-prospect lists.mlive.com

(AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)NEW YORK – Completing the 2020 season required MLB to rewrite its rule book. The Grapefruit League schedule was reworked to limit travel, and clubs won’t play exhibitions against local colleges — usually a spring staple. MLB has claimed billions in losses after playing the 2020 season almost entirely without fans, and free agents were met by a sluggish market this winter. AdSeveral notable players remain available.
It looks like Miguel Cabrera is serious about playing first base
The one and only time he (sort of) spoke to reporters last season, Miguel Cabrera spent much of the time musing -- largely unprompted -- about how much he wanted to play first base. Cabrera posted a video to Instagram on Thursday that showed him taking ground balls in an indoor workout facility. Cabrera was exclusively a designated hitter in 2020 and has only logged 58 games at first base over the last three seasons. “It means a lot to play first base,” Cabrera said in the final weekend of the 2020 season. Hinch said he’s open to the idea of playing Cabrera at first base in 2021 in order to add flexibility to the lineup.mlive.com
Should Isaac Paredes be Tigers’ Opening Day 3rd baseman?
But his performance this winter in his native country, combined with his debut last summer in Detroit, is enough to beg the question: Should Paredes be the Tigers’ Opening Day third baseman? The Tigers could also use a catcher and a second baseman, and maybe even another outfielder if they wanted to splurge. With all those glaring needs, the Tigers might be content to leave well enough alone and give Paredes a shot to play third base regularly. Just about anywhere, including perhaps second base. He knows if he keep his body intact, he will be able to play second base as well as third.”But that’s probably more of a 2022 idea than a 2021 one.mlive.com

After surprising start, Detroit Tigers quickly fading from playoff picture
DETROIT Less than a week ago, the Detroit Tigers were four games above .500, in first place in the AL Central Division and multiple games ahead of the other wildcard contenders. After two disappointing losses to the Chicago White Sox and another sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, the Tigers have a losing record and sit outside the current playoff picture. The slide began with Matt Boyd handing back a hard-earned lead against the White Sox on Wednesday. As it stands, the Tigers have lost 20 straight games to the Indians -- a stunning streak for a Major League Baseball team. But losing five in a row erased that cushion, and now theyre forced to win against legitimate playoff teams.

Can Detroit Tigers bounce back from deflating loss or is this beginning of long slide?
DETROIT The first three weeks of this Detroit Tigers season have been unexpectedly fun. No moment has been more exciting than Wednesdays fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox. In the next 10 games, the Tigers will bookend a four-game series against the White Sox with two three-game series against the Cleveland Indians. The feeling in that clubhouse if they would have stolen a game from the White Sox on the backs of Greiner and Castro would be special. Losing eight of the next 10 against the Indians and White Sox would be a crippling blow, especially with 11 games against the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs on the horizon.

Detroit Tigers appear to have current, future bullpen ace in Gregory Soto

Detroit Tigers took care of early business, but now well see if they can really compete
DETROIT With more than one-fifth of the full schedule in the books, the Detroit Tigers have one of the best records in the entire American League. In the Tigers defense, they can only play the games on their schedule, and they more or less took advantage of those first 13 games. The way the Tigers have played so far suggests theyre the best of all the really bad teams. Looking forward, this weeks series with the White Sox is extremely important. Not only do the White Sox appear to have the best roster of that middling tier, they also play the Tigers 10 times during this stretch.

MLB looks to shorter doubleheaders to ease scheduling chaos
(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)The Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds were the first teams to try out baseballs new time-saving measure a doubleheader with seven-inning games. By the end of the night Sunday, 12 teams had played 10 games, but six had played seven or fewer. Making doubleheader games seven innings long can help, at least in theory. You can use your bullpen a lot different, earlier in the game and try to get through that part. But last year, there were only 33 doubleheaders total, and the New York Yankees led the way with seven.

Detroit Tigers prove superior in comeback win against Kansas City
DETROIT From getting blown out in the home opener to getting two wins in a row against the Kansas City Royals, the Tigers seem to have the better hand getting majority series wins against the Royals. At that point the only run the Tigers were able to get was a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schoop to put them on the board but still down 4-1. It wasnt until the bottom of the 5th-inning that it was time to tie it up for the home team. Hes been swinging a good, short swing and on the whole field driving the baseball. So have Milwaukee first baseman Logan Morrison, Cincinnati pitcher Nate Jones, Tampa Bay pitcher Aaron Loup and New York Yankees pitcher Luis Aviln.
Short season could give rebuilding Detroit Tigers a shot
DETROIT On their way to 114 defeats last year, the Detroit Tigers actually won seven of their first 10 games, and they were still 12-10 in late April. With only 60 games on tap for 2020, the rebuilding Tigers could be in a position to benefit from a high-variance sprint through the regular season. If Detroit can overachieve for a couple months, the Tigers might actually have a shot at a postseason berth -- a possibility that would have been awfully remote in a 162-game season. It was just such a cool moment in my life, to be able to hit batting practice on a big league field, Torkelson said recently. VERSATILENiko Goodrum can do a little of everything for the Tigers, having played every position but pitcher and catcher last year.
