Ann Arbor parent pens open letter to Michigan officials to commit to full-time school in fall
ANN ARBOR โ Local parent Nick Bagley has penned an open letter to the Michigan legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer calling for legislation that would ensure children return to school full time this fall. โI think a lot of parents are feeling kind of hopeless about this school year,โ said Bagley. Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift has publicly said that school will be back full time in the fall. โTheyโve shredded the trust they had in the community.โHe criticized the stateโs decision to leave school openings during the pandemic up to the districts.
Farmington Public Schools board approves increasing in-person learning
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ The Farmington Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted 6-0 on Tuesday to increase in-person learning and relax the 6-foot social distancing measure in order to increase in-person learning for students. The district will continue other mitigation practices such as mask wearing, hand washing, cleaning and sanitizing, air filtration and student partitions. The board also granted interim Superintendent Bobbie Goodrum to make decisions for the district on how to move forward. Districts across the state are seeking clarification on the March 22 date.โAdThe district is currently looking to offer five four-hour days of in-person learning for elementary students with no in-person lunch, as well as four full days of in-person learning for middle and high school students. Families who have chosen remote learning and learning at a distance can continue to have their children learn in those models.

Parents of Grosse Pointe students urge school board to begin in-person learning
GROSSE POINTE, Mich. โ Despite COVID-19 cases rising, Grosse Pointe parents are pushing for face-to-face learning. They took their argument to the Grosse Pointe School Board on Monday night. Tonight the parents say the drawbacks of online learning far outweigh the risk of their kids getting sick from face-to-face learning. โI agree with these parents, I want our kids back,โ said Grosse Pointe School Board President, Margaret Weertz. Elementary students are back in person part of the week, and parents say itโs hurting middle and high school students.

DETROIT โ The Detroit Public Schools Community District has regained control of its finances. The Detroit Financial Review Commission (FRC) voted unanimously on Monday to immediately grant a waiver that releases both Detroit Public Schools (DPS) and Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) from active state oversight. READ: Detroit Public Schools Community District expected to be released from state oversightThe elected DPSCD School Board and its appointed superintendent manage the district along with DPS, which solely functions to manage the districtโs legacy debt. โThis is a monumental day for the state of Michigan,โ said State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks, chairperson of the Detroit FRC. โOur largest school district has shown leadership in having three consecutive balanced budgets with minimal oversight of day-to-day operations.

Michigan school board votes to fire superintendent who made controversial remarks on George Floyd
GRAND LEDGE, Mich. A school board near Lansing has voted to fire its superintendent after he partly blamed George Floyd for his fatal encounter with police. The Grand Ledge school board heard many hours of public comment during a special meeting Friday. Brian Metcalf will be placed on paid leave until his dismissal is finalized. Metcalf had said on Facebook that Floyds death in Minneapolis was wrong. But he also said it all starts with being a law abiding citizen, and that Floyd was suspected of using counterfeit money. Metcalf, who is white, had apologized and said he would undergo diversity training.
Romulus Community Schools suspends acting superintendent without pay for 10 days
ROMULUS, Mich. โ The acting superintendent of Romulus Community Schools has been suspended without pay for 10 school days, according to school officials. Flinnoia Hallโs suspension stems from alleged behavior during a Feb. 10 Romulus Board of Education meeting. Below is the official statement from the Romulus Community Schools:โThe Romulus Community School District expects a standard of behavior from its employees that consists of professionalism, respect, and civility. During the February 10, 2020 meeting of the Romulus Board of Education, the Acting Superintendent engaged in conduct that was inconsistent with this standard of behavior. As a result, during a special meeting held on February 20, 2020, the Board voted to suspend the Acting Superintendent without pay for 10 school days.
