WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – Crimes committed against a person in Washtenaw County where evidence shows the victim was targeted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity will now be charged as a hate crime. Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit announced Friday, Feb. 12, his office will charge crimes perpetuated on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity under Michigan’s ethnic intimidation law. The law does not specifically cover sexual orientation or gender identity as currently written. “Michigan’s laws regarding hate crimes do not expressly prohibit crimes based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity,” Savit wrote in his latest policy directive.
