Tracking light rain-snow mix Wednesday in Metro Detroit
Iโm all settled into the weather center after finishing the 6 p.m. newscast. I just ordered soup and plan on a cozy night watching snow on Exact Track 4D radar. Hopefully, youโre at home for the night, but if you do need to travel, hereโs what you can expect.

โThe year of so much grief but without proper grievingโ: A reflection on the COVID pandemic
In the early days of the pandemic, many of us were afraid to touch anything. And too many people only realized theyโd come in contact with it when they suddenly found theyโd lost their sense of taste or smell. Something closer to actual warfare broke out in spats between Americans divided over proper COVID precautions. The Christmas when we invented โPoolocceโ
This one Christmas my now-brother-in-law Colin and I cooked up a game on our in-laws pool table and named it โPoolocce.โAs in, bocce ball and billiards combined. Trust me, if you want to hear something that sounds spooky and unworldly at the same time, throw a bocce ball on lake ice. โItโs the craze thatโs sweeping the nation! This holiday season, if you have a pool table or your family does, try Poolocce. โRemember, friends -- itโs the game thatโs sweeping the nation!
My Grandmaโs Christmas cookies that have no match
So Grandma Carr -- God rest her soul -- used to make these Christmas cookies that were so good they had to have been laced with some magic secret ingredient known only to her. I havenโt had a frosted shortbread cookie (with sprinkles) before or since that could touch her recipe. I can still picture that Thom McCann shoebox bursting open, cookies rolling asunder in all directions. โYou want the cookies?โ I shouted. Have the cookies!โOf course, 35 years later, if I had a time machine I would go back and eat those cookies right off the ground.
My favorite Christmas songs on one CD, and a deep-dive into a Barry Manilow classic
Did you know Barry Manilow did a swinginโ Vegas version of the song โMy Favorite Thingsโ? Sami's Christmas Hits (Jason Carr)Which brings us back to Barry Manilow. And boy does Barryโs version sizzle. Tell her, Alexa, play โMy Favorite Thingsโ by Barry Manilow. A few years back I interviewed Barry Manilow and I asked him about this particular song and arrangement.
I love this photo
No idea of the origin or who these stewardesses are, but Iโm going to call them, from left to right, Bev, Carol, Inez and Judy. And, if I had to guess, based on the fashion, the hair and the pattern on the seat upholstery, โback whenโ is about 1977ish. And back then, if there was room in first class, thatโs where theyโd seat you. As for the upholstery on those seats, I absolutely remember that red and blue abstract pattern. Well, this has been a fun trip down memory lane but itโs time to put your tray tables up and prepare for departure.
Look what I found Jason Carr
So perhaps youve heard about the Dr. Pepper scarcity thats the new toilet paper shortage. Life used to be easier: water, pop, iced tea, lemonade, coffee, hot tea. I love Dr. Pepper. Raised on Tang, Ive now become a refreshment nomad wandering the desert in search of a taste oasis. Right now Im gonna go check the vending area to see if theres any Dr. Pepper to be had.
Tati shares her new traditions
Tati Amare - There have been so many changes in the last several months, life as weve known it is completely different. These changes have made the summer of 2020 very different from what I was planning for. In March, my biggest concern was getting tickets to the first, hottest concert of the season. Instead of dwelling on whats different Ive decided to enjoy NEW traditions. Zoom calls, socially distanced gatherings, masks on during long walks along the river are unusual, to say the least, but lets enjoy this moment, learn the lessons and lean in to the hidden blessings!

Kim DeGiulio: Going with the flow
Itโs especially hard when youโre used to doing something that you really enjoy and then thatโs taken away from you. Itโs hard, but I think itโs only going to make us stronger. (WDIV)I start to wonder how long itโs going to be until weโre able to gather like that again. But Iโm really starting to appreciate how peaceful it is to give yourself space. but Iโm also going to make sure I take more time to continue to have moments by myself like Iโm doing now.
Kim DeGiulio: Adjusting to this new normal
My husband is working from home and Iโm working in a newsroom that feels empty as many of our staff is also working from home. My husband and I live in a smaller apartment downtown so heโs turned our dining table into his new office. Itโs a great way to calm your stress which I know a lot of us are dealing with right now. Other than movies and eating carry out, Iโm planning on catching up on lots of sleep this weekend. This weekend will be a blessing and Iโll come back on Monday well rested and ready for another work week!
