Predicting Tigers’ rotation in 2023 with Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal sidelined
DETROIT -- Back in June, we tried to make a few educated guesses about the Tigers’ 2023 pitching rotation in the wake of the news that Casey Mize would be undergoing Tommy John surgery. But we added this caveat: “Yes, the Tigers have sustained an avalanche of injuries over the last two months. 1 starter -- Tarik Skubal -- is no longer in the picture for at least the first few months of the 2023 season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery. LHP Eduardo RodriguezA tweaked rib cage interrupted Rodriguez’s inaugural season with the Tigers after eight starts. New Tigers injury updates, including 3 pitchers who won’t be back in 2022
DETROIT -- Three pitchers won’t return to pitch for the Detroit Tigers in 2022. Additionally, right-hander Spencer Turnbull, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, won’t return to pitch this season. Hinch said the aggressive timeline required for Turnbull to make a couple of starts in September wouldn’t be worth it. Among other Tigers with long-term injuries, the prognosis is brighter for catcher Jake Rogers to return if only briefly before the end of the year. That would put him in line to rejoin the team at some point next week.mlive.com
Predicting Tigers’ 2023 rotation with Casey Mize no longer in picture
Tommy John elbow surgery, which Mize will undergo this month, is one of the wonders of modern sports medicine. The Tigers’ 2022 season has been a case study on the perils of relying on starting pitching in an era in which injuries -- and major surgeries like Tommy John -- are all but inevitable. The 2022 Tigers have proved as much. Here’s how the Tigers’ rotation might look in 2023:1. Tommy John is not in the picture.mlive.com

Tigers reach deals with 7 players, but could face Spencer Turnbull in arbitration battle
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.mlive.com

Tigers’ Spencer Turnbull gave a generous gift to his catcher. The whole team got to share the moment.
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Coaches fired up the video board to play highlights from Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter 10 months ago in Seattle at the Detroit Tigers’ team meeting on Friday morning. I was getting goosebumps,” said Tigers catcher Eric Haase, who was behind the plate for the game. Then Turnbull emerged with a boxed gift, revealing the true reason for the replays. “It was very special,” Haase said. Tigers winter roster decisions: Who’s back? Who’s on the bubble? Who’s out?
DETROIT -- The offseason officially begins after the conclusion of the World Series, but it’s likely the Detroit Tigers -- and other clubs -- will begin their winter roster pruning before that. Some of the decisions will be easy, like dropping players who were used as stopgap roster fill-ins throughout the summer. What does Tigers’ 2022 rotation look like without Spencer Turnbull? It’s not nearly as good.
DETROIT -- Will Spencer Turnbull be back in time for the Detroit Tigers’ playoff run in 2022? Will there even be a playoff run in 2022 without Turnbull in the mix? But there’s little doubt that the Tigers’ recent success has rekindled hopes of serious contention as early as 2022. Now he’ll miss the rest of the 2021 season and very likely all (or almost all) of the 2022 season. The frustrating thing is we lose a really good pitcher.”Today, the foundation of the 2022 rotation has three pitchers, one fewer than planned: Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matthew Boyd.mlive.com
Tigers’ Spencer Turnbull to undergo season-ending elbow surgery
DETROIT -- Spencer Turnbull, who emerged as the Detroit Tigers’ top starting pitcher and threw a no-hitter just two months ago, will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair chronic damage in his right elbow. Turnbull posted a 2.88 ERA in 50 innings of work this season, including a no-hitter on May 18 at Seattle. After Turnbull had a setback in his rehab in Lakeland recently, he consulted with experts who recommended surgery. And Spencer came to the conclusion that it was in his best interest, and quite frankly in our best interest, to have it done now. He had some chronic damage that was revealed through the injury that he had.mlive.com
Tigers midseason report card: ERA down and hopes up for pitching staff, despite shaky bullpen
RELATED: Tigers’ midseason report card for hittersWhen things have gone wrong in 2021, the bullpen has been one of the main culprits, posting a 5.43 ERA (compared to 4.22 for starters). Tigers mailbag: Have 2 new catchers helped spark team’s surge?
But it hasn’t escaped notice that a significant change at one position has roughly coincided with the Tigers’ late-May hot streak. Q: Do Haase and Rogers really represent that big of an upgrade over Ramos and Greiner? Ultimately I think Ramos can still be useful as a designated hitter, pinch-hitter and, yes, a backup or third catcher. Spencer Turnbull’s resilience is promising sign for Tigers
DETROIT – Spencer Turnbull just couldn’t figure it out early on and it nearly cost him. But the Detroit Tigers starting pitcher knows how to forgive and forget and that was on display on Saturday. Turnbull’s performance on the mound was shaky for one inning as walked three batters in a five-batter span, which led to the New York Yankees having a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the second inning. MLB already has six no-hitters, including two in a 24-hour span. What’s going on?
Fewer balls in play equals fewer chances for the baseball gods to play a role in outcomes. And of the six no-hitters this year, four of them were either or two batters away from being a perfect game. That’s one oddity that is more difficult to figure out: Despite the glut of no-hitters, perfect games are rarer than ever. It’s been almost nine years since Mariners starter Felix Hernandez threw the last perfect game on Aug. 15, 2012.
