Lead designer of 1993 arcade classic ‘NBA Jam’ made secret tweak to benefit Detroit Pistons
DETROIT – In 1993, Midway released “NBA Jam” in arcades across the country. The game was later ported to the Super Nintendo, the Sega Game Gear, the Sega Genesis, the Sega CD and the Game Boy in 1994. Lead designer Mark Turmell wanted to make a game that had a wide appeal, covering multiple demographics, after his last game with Midway sold under expectations. Turmell was an avid fan of the Detroit Pistons and programed the game to lower the stats of Chicago Bulls players when they played against the Pistons. AdThe player roster was taken from the 1993-94 season, the last season Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas played before he retired.
EA Sports announces long-awaited return of college football video game series
EA Sports has officially announced the long-awaited return of its popular college football video game series. NCAA Football was last released in 2014, with Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson on the cover. Known for its dynasty and create-a-player modes, the video game series was among the most popular in the world. It appears the series will be rebranded as “EA Sports College Football.” There are still many questions, such as whether the game will include player names and if all schools will agree to participate. No further details have been revealed, but it appears NCAA Football is likely to be released for the 2022 season on Next Generation consoles.
Assassin’s Creed to get live action adaptation after Netflix, Ubisoft strike deal
Netflix and Ubisoft made a deal to develop content based on the video game franchise Assassin’s Creed. Netflix has the rights to develop live action, animated and anime entertainment based on the game. The first series in development is slated to be a live action adaptation, according to a press release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”The search is on for a showrunner. “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, Vice President, Original Series, Netflix.
Hero Nation to host virtual event empowering young people on Saturday
Ypsilanti, Mich. – On Saturday, Oct. 10, Ypsilanti-based nonprofit Hero Nation will host a virtual event highlighting the empowering impact of comic books and video games on young people. “When I was approached by Hero Nation to be a part of this project, I was excited and it felt like a fun way to share my story and represent for those who look like me.”The virtual event can be attended through the Hero Nation Facebook page. “The kids on our roster are very passionate, talented and powerful young people,” said Jermaine Dickerson, founder and executive director of Hero Nation. Hero Nation ‘Presents’ will also introduce its new 2021 initiative for comic creators, Creator Alliance. Hero Nation ‘Presents’ was created in its place.
Microsoft to launch new $500 Xbox console Nov. 10
The holiday video game console battle is heating up. Microsoft says its Xbox Series X will cost $500 and debut Nov. 10, just ahead of the holidays. There havent been new generations of video game consoles for several years. The most recent Xbox, Xbox One, was released in 2013, as was Sonys PlayStation 4. A stripped down version, Xbox Series S, will cost $300 and be available at the same time.
