AKIL BADDOO

Akil Baddoo still struggling in Toledo

A week after being optioned to Toledo after logging a .140 average in 50 at bats this season for the Tigers, Akil Baddoo has still not found his form at the plate. Badoo went 1-for-4 on Friday for the Mud Hens in a win over Louisville, batting No. 2 in the Mud Hens lineup and playing centerfield. Before being sent down, Baddoo was 7-for-50, a .140 average with a .218 on-base percentage, in 17 games for Detroit. He is a career .246 hitter.

Tigers prospect Riley Greene runs ‘with feet on the ground’ for first time since injury

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfield prospect Riley Greene has been given the go-ahead by doctors to resume baseball activities. “He ran this morning in Lakeland, feet on the ground for the first time,” Hinch said. He went 0-for-5 in his only game with the Mud Hens since being demoted. Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize managed just 2/3 of an inning during his rehab start for the Mud Hens on Thursday. I watched the video a little bit....His execution wasn’t great.”Another injured starting pitcher, Matt Manning, will make his second rehab start for the Mud Hens Friday night.

Akil Baddoo was first struggling Tiger demoted. Will he have company in Toledo?

DETROIT -- Outfielder Akil Baddoo was the first struggling player to pay for the Detroit Tigers’ slow start in 2022. Baddoo had logged just 50 at-bats (hitting .140 with 15 strikeouts) when he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson is hitting .149 (13-for-87) with 12 walks and 34 strikeouts. Torkelson can be easily sent to Toledo, while Haase would have to pass through waivers first. “Once everything starts clicking, everybody’s going to get going at the same time and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Akil Baddoo isn’t first Tiger to endure May demotion: Some came back stronger than others

Detroit Tigers second-year outfielder Akil Baddoo was the latest player to learn that tough lesson when he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Perhaps if the Tigers were 10 games above .500 instead of 10 games below, they might have had more patience. Candelario had spent all of 2018 as an everyday player, but the Tigers opted to give his at-bats -- at least temporarily -- to Dawel Lugo. Mahtook came back to play later in 2018 and even briefly in 2019, but his days as an everyday player were over. Akil Baddoo reacts to surprising demotion: ‘I’m a big-league player’

DETROIT -- A year ago, Akil Baddoo’s hot start was the talk of Detroit and the talk of the league. I’m going to go down there and get the reps that I need and be ready to come back,” he said. I’m a big-league player...I definitely want to be back where I feel I belong. Hinch said he hopes a detour to Toledo can help Baddoo get his swing back on track. Hinch said it’s important for him to get regular at-bats in Toledo rather than scuffling in Detroit.

Tigers lineup: Derek Hill in center, Austin Meadows returns

DETROIT -- There’s no longer any suspense about who the Detroit Tigers will use as their everyday center fielder. Derek Hill is the only left after Akil Baddoo was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Hill will bat ninth for the Tigers (8-19) as they open a four-day, five-game series against the Oakland Athletics (10-18). The lineup will get a boost from the return of Austin Meadows, who missed the last three games with a non-COVID illness. Tigers right-hander Michael Pineda (1-1, 3.77 ERA) will face A’s right-hander Paul Blackburn (3-0, 2.22).

Tigers option Akil Baddoo to Toledo to try to shake sophomore slump

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Akil Baddoo, who burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2021, was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, just one month into his sophomore season. Baddoo was hitting just .140 (7-for-50) with a double, a homer, five walks and 15 strikeouts in 17 games. The Tigers hope a detour to Toledo will help get his bat back on track. He is under no such restriction in 2022 and can be transferred freely back and forth between Detroit and Toledo. To replace Baddoo on the roster, the Tigers activated right-handed pitcher Rony Garcia.

Worried about Tigers’ slow start? You probably should be.

The Tigers are 6-12 and have lost five in a row, and eight of their last 10. But even in the best of circumstances, the Tigers’ pathway to a playoff spot was going to be a narrow one this year. To get that final spot in the American League would have required 91 wins last season, 93 wins in 2019 and 90 wins in 2018. To reach 90 wins this season, the Tigers would have to go 84-60 the rest of the way. But there’s little doubt that the Tigers have dug themselves a hole in the first three weeks of the season.

Tigers’ hitters ‘chasing their tails’ as they try to escape slumps

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jeimer Candelario is getting his first off day of the season on Thursday after starting the first 17 games. Candelario, perhaps the Tigers’ best offensive player in 2021, is hitting just .143 (9-for-63) with a .408 OPS (25 OPS+) early in the season. “I’m just trying something a little different and giving him a day off to watch the game and decompress a little bit,” Hinch said. Jonathan Schoop, who is starting his 18th consecutive game on Thursday, is hitting just .154 (10-for-65) with a .434 OPS (31 OPS+). “These guys are pressing pretty hard, trying to try to solve a couple of weeks of problems in one game,” Hinch said.

12 notable Tigers’ splits from last year, and what they might mean for 2022

But they’re often interesting, and some of them could provide a clue to the Tigers’ 2022 season (if there is a 2022 season). The Tigers put up better numbers each time they faced a starting pitcher, culminating with a .791 OPS the third time through the order. Unlike Detroit hitters, who were roughly the same at home and on the road, Tigers’ pitchers were considerably worse away from Comerica. Tigers pitchers faced only 10 batters after throwing more than 100 pitches, so they rarely went more than three times through the batting order. So we’ll note that Tigers’ pitchers had better numbers when Jake Rogers, Eric Haase and Dustin Garneau were behind the plate.

Tigers’ Akil Baddoo shouldn’t just be in Rookie of the Year race. He should be one of its leaders.

DETROIT -- When will Detroit Tigers outfielder Akil Baddoo start to generate some more buzz in the American League Rookie of the Year race? Not only is there no reason why Akil Baddoo shouldn’t be in the ROY race, there’s a case for him to be near the top of it. Part of the reason is that many people were ready to declare Baddoo a flash in the pan. The final reason Baddoo is only now entering the conversation is because he was, until recently, not a true everyday player. There are still two months left in the season, plenty of time for this race to play out.
