Kalamazoo County’s 10 most dangerous intersections of 2021 revealed

KALAMAZOO, MI — Just as the snow begins to fly, Michigan Auto Law has revealed its annual list of the most dangerous intersections in Kalamazoo County, based on police car accident report data for 2021. Nine of the intersections in the top 10 are located, at least partly, in city limits. The intersection at Drake Road and West Main Street in Kalamazoo remained as the county’s most dangerous, in terms of total crashes, with 69 in 2021, up from 42 in 2020. The second most dangerous intersection in 2021 was the downtown intersection of Park Street and Kalamazoo Avenue, which climbed from the No. The total number of crashes increased from from 33 in 2020, to 56 in 2021, while the number of injuries increased from eight to 18.

Two people displaced by fire in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – Two adults were displaced after a fire Tuesday morning. A fire started at a mobile home in Americana Estates, near the intersection of Drake Road and Stadium Drive, before 6:32 a.m. Oct. 4, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said. It took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control and crews were on scene for about 90 minutes, KDPS Public Information Officer Jay Shatara said. Two adults were displaced and the structure was a total loss, Shatara said. Two gas stations robbed in Oshtemo Township

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – Two gas stations were robbed Thursday morning in Oshtemo Township. The Speedway at Drake Road and KL Avenue was robbed around 2:48 a.m., July 28, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said. The Shell Station, 5171 W. Main St., was robbed shortly after that, police said. The gas stations are about a mile and a half apart. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 269-383-8821 or anonymously call Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.

Medical issue leads to crash in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – A medical issue led to a crash on Friday morning. A person driving had a medical issue at the intersection of Drake Road and Stadium Drive around 11 a.m., March 25, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said. The medical issue caused the driver’s car to roll off the road and down a large hill, police said. Traffic heading eastbound on Stadium Drive was backed up as one lane of traffic was closed as police responded to the scene. KALAMAZOO, MI — A Jeep crashed on the entrance to northbound U.S. 131 from Drake Road, the Oshtemo Township Fire Department reports. The department notified the public of the crash about noon on Friday, Oct. 29. The ramp appeared to be partially blocked during the response. Roads are slippery, the department said, asking people to drive with caution. Local officials point to GOP clerk who promoted QAnon theories.

Ambulance involved in Friday morning crash at Stadium/Drake intersection in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI — An ambulance and sedan collided Friday morning at the intersection of Drake Road and Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo Public Safety spokesperson Ryan Bridges told MLive that both vehicles were turning from Stadium Drive onto Drake when they collided at around 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 22. Both the front end of the sedan, on the driver’s side, and the passenger door of the ambulance were damaged in the crash. There were no citations issued or injuries reported in the crash and the ambulance was not carrying any passengers at the time of the crash, Bridges said. In 2020, there there were 42 total crashes with nine reported injuries at that intersection, the report said.

Two-day closure of Kalamazoo high school after power outage ‘disappointing,’ district says

KALAMAZOO, MI – The two-day closure of Kalamazoo Central High School was disappointing, the district said. The Kalamazoo Public Schools high school, 2432 N. Drake Road, lost power Tuesday, Sept. 7, as severe thunderstorms hit Kalamazoo and moved across Michigan. “The power outage at Kalamazoo Central High School and subsequent two-day closing, that was caused by a recent storm, was disappointing,” KPS Executive Director for Communications Susan Coney said. The building was closed on both Sept. 8 and 9, because of the power outage. There are a few small outages effecting less than 200 people in Kalamazoo County, per Consumers Energy outage map.

Power out for businesses along Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – Just over 900 Consumers Energy customers along Stadium Drive were without power on Tuesday afternoon. The June 8 power outage is along Stadium Drive, between Drake Road and Howard Street. It also runs south of Stadium Drive to Lorraine Avenue, according to the Consumers Energy outage map. Traffic lights along Stadium Drive are out, causing backups, and many businesses along the road don’t have power. There was no cause of the power outage listed at the time of publication.

Man dies after Kalamazoo shooting along West Main Street

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A 64-year-old Kalamazoo man was shot and killed late Thursday in an area along West Main Street, east of Drake Road, police said. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded about 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 to the 4500 block of West Main Street on a report of shots being fired. Police arrived to find a man who had been shot several times. Investigators did not release other details of the shooting. Ascension Borgess cancer center set to open September 2021

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Ascension Medical Group Borgess Cancer Center is on track to open September 2021, the healthcare system announced. The multi-level building will offer medical oncology, hematology and infusion services, according to a news release from Ascension Borgess. Bronson’s Cancer Pavilion began chemotherapy and infusion services for adults in January. The new cancer pavilion was named in honor of former Bronson president and CEO Frank Sardone. Both projects came after a 2018 announcement from the West Michigan Cancer Center that the center would move some services out of its downtown Kalamazoo location and into separate Bronson and Borgess facilities to effectively meet the area’s growing needs for outpatient cancer treatment.

Western Michigan alumnus opens second Chick-fil-A location in Kalamazoo area

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A Western Michigan University alumnus has opened his second Chick-fil-A location in Kalamazoo County with the grand opening of the 504 N. Drake Road restaurant. “The lifeline of the community is Western Michigan University.”Being in business for almost four years at the Portage location has taught Rashid about Chick-fil-A customer demands, he said. The Portage location opened with much fanfare, as the first 100 people who camped out overnight received free gift cards as part of the typical Chick-fil-A grand opening promotion. Working with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Kalamazoo team constructed the parking lot to have multiple entryways so that West Main would not get congested. Customer Andrea Butler was also impressed with the speedy service during the grand opening.

Kalamazoo police will monitor traffic at new Chick-fil-A location

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Police and city officials are expecting a crowd for opening day at Kalamazoo’s newest Chick-fil-A location. The restaurant at the corner of Drake Road and West Main Street in Kalamazoo will be the second Chick-fil-A in Kalamazoo County. The new location will have a similar double drive-thru as Chick-fil-A’s first Kalamazoo County location, on Westnedge Avenue in Portage. Eldridge said the aim to have traffic contained in the property’s own parking lot and avoid spilling out onto West Main Street. A new Chick-fil-A location is also opening in Norton Shores on Thursday.

Man reports being shot during robbery

KALAMAZOO, MI – A man told police he was shot early Thursday, Dec. 24, during a robbery. Kalamazoo police responded to the 1300 block of North Park Street for a report of a man who had been shot. The victim told police that he was shot during a robbery somewhere on Drake Road. There were no report of gunshots on Drake Road during the time the man said he was shot, police said. The man suffered a single gunshot wound and was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital.
