SAGINAW, MI — A Petoskey man wanted on sex crimes warrant out of northern Michigan was recently arrested in Saginaw. Michigan State Police troopers from the Gaylord Post in January 2021 began investigating a sexual assault complaint after a woman at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital claimed she had been assaulted in her home. The woman and Knolton knew each other prior to the assault, troopers said. More than a year after the alleged assault, Emmett County authorities on March 8 of this year issued a warrant for Knolton’s arrest. The MSP 7th District Fugitive Team on March 30 located and arrested Knolton, 23, in Saginaw.

PETOSKEY, MI – A Northern Michigan college has added a degree program that trains students in firefighting and Emergency Medial Services. The two-year program at North Central Michigan College offers students an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Fire Science. The degree available this fall prepares students with essential, hands-on firefighting education and training and includes additional courses in Emergency Medical Services. North Central also offers a Firefighter Certificate of Development, a one-year degree, into the new associate degree program. “This program is a perfect example of the benefits derived from ‘stacking’ credentials,” Vice President of Academic Affairs Stephen Strom said.

The former riding arena and equestrian center is being renovated into an indoor beer garden and distillery. CROSS VILLAGE TOWNSHIP, MI -- A Petoskey woman entered a no-contest plea this week after she was accused of tampering with a voting ballot tabulator, according to the Associated Press and the Traverse City Eagle. Tera Jackson entered her plea Tuesday after prosecutors agreed to drop two felony charges in exchange for her plea to a misdemeanor charge of creating a disturbance. As part of the plea, Jackson agreed to having her sentence delayed with the possibility of her conviction being expunged. The effort included three men -- one of whom is a township trustee -- trying to access the ballot tabulator. A plea of no contest is not an admission of guilt, however at sentencing it is treated as such.

EMMET COUNTY, MI – A man found walking down US-31 with a severe laceration said he was attacked by a machete-wielding man in Northern Michigan. When troopers arrived, they found the victim, a 34-year-old Petoskey man walking in the middle of the highway with a severe wound to his left leg. The victim stated he had been attacked by a 56-year-old Petoskey man staying at a local motel. It allegedly culminated with one man being attacked with a machete by the other man. The suspect was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon and lodged in the Emmet County Jail pending arraignment.

PETOSKEY, MI – A Northern Michigan woman is accused of embezzling nearly $300,000 from her employer over three years by raising her own wages, misusing a company credit card and other means, police said. The owner recently discovered several alleged discrepancies in Atkins’ work, fired her on July 19 and lodged a complaint with MSP. She also allegedly used a company credit card to purchase more than $97,000 in personal items. The investigative report was turned over to the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office for review. An arrest warrant was issued on Aug. 6; Atkins was arrested and lodged at Emmet County Jail.

PETOSKEY, MI – A Northern Michigan woman has been charged for keeping wild animals on her property without a permit, 9&10 News reports. Kei Ju Farm and Rescue in Petoskey cares for dogs, goats, emus, alpacas, chickens and more. The Department of Natural Resources warned Hall about the violation about a year ago, but Hall denies that happened, the report said. The DNR did seize the raccoon, squirrel and fawn a few months ago and later euthanized them because they were unhealthy, wouldn’t survive in the wild and no licensed care facilities would take them. Last week, Hall pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge, the report said.

Tough year ends with a big tip for Michigan woman: $2,021
PETOSKEY, Mich. – A tough year for restaurants ended in a remarkable way for a server in northern Michigan. Filmore’s restaurant in Petoskey when a customer with a $44 order left a tip of $2,021. The Petoskey News-Review reported that the tip came from a couple who wanted to remain anonymous. Since November, Michigan bars and restaurants again have been limited to outdoor dining or carry-out orders. After paying bills, she said she will follow the advice to “be nice” written on the receipt by putting a portion of the tip into a family foundation that was established after her uncle died.

Known as the “2021 Just Be Nice Challenge” the movement calls for people with the finances to do so, to give tips worth $2,021 at various businesses. The 2021 version of the challenge kicked off this week with a waitress at the JW Filmore in Petoskey and a waitress at a Florida restaurant receiving the tips. PETOSKEY, MI – It could cost up to $10 million to repair a section of a bike trail that a collapsed into Lake Michigan amid erosion caused by high water and wave action, according to a study. Bicyclists have been rerouted from the Little Traverse Bay shoreline to ride the U.S. 31 shoulder since parts of a scenic 1.25-mile section of the Little Traverse Wheelway collapsed into the bay in April, Up North Live reports. The closed stretch is between East Park in Bay Harbor and Magnus Park in Petoskey. Businesses in northern parts of Michigan were allowed to partially reopen amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on May 22. Officials have identified a positive coronavirus (COVID-19) patient who went to three businesses in Northern Michigan over the weekend and might have infected other people. They released the locations, dates and times of the possible exposure. Contact tracing happens when someone tests positive for the virus, and contact tracers track down close contacts that person had and places they visited during the time they might have been infections.
