Flint school board to attend MASB conference; next meeting delayed to Nov. 17

FLINT, MI -- The Flint Board of Education has delayed its regular meeting for the second week of November to attend professional training in Grand Rapids. All other board members -- Carol McIntosh, Danielle Green, Laura MacIntyre, Joyce Ellis-McNeal, Chris Del Morone and Allen Gilbert -- elected to be in attendance during a previous board meeting. The district will pay for the school board member’s attendance and hotel stay at the MASB conference. Flint school board’s regularly scheduled meeting is now moved to Wednesday, Nov. 17 before its next meeting. There will be a board committee of the whole meeting and a regular meeting on the same night.

Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-163 establishes a new government panel to advise her on the treatment of Black Michiganders. READ: Michigan declares racism public health crisis, will require implicit bias training for state employeesThis pandemic has confirmed and highlighted the deadly nature of these preexisting inequities caused by systemic racism, Whitmer said. Her solution is the creation of the Black Leadership Advisory Council within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. We have a lot of work to do to eradicate the systemic racism that Black Americans have faced for generations, Whitmer said.

The governor also signed Executive Directive 2020-9, recognizing racism as a public health crisis and taking initial steps to address it within state government. Under the Executive Directive, the governor asked MDHHS to make health equity a major goal, as well as required implicit bias training for all state employees. Thats why today, I am proud to create the Black Leadership Advisory Council of Michigan, said Governor Whitmer. Promoting the cultural arts within the Black community through coordinated efforts, advocacy, and collaboration with state government.

Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Directive to develop rules to require implicit bias training for health professionals to address racial disparities. Executive Directive 2020-7 directs the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to begin developing rules that will require implicit bias training as part of the knowledge and skills necessary for licensure, registration and renewal of licenses and registrations of health professionals in Michigan. Implicit bias training was one of the recommendations made by the Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities. The evidence shows that training in implicit bias can make a positive difference, so today we are taking action to help improve racial equity across Michigans health care system. Tigers GM Al Avila said recently that anything could happen in the 60-game season. NHL plans move to small-group training as Phase 2 of return

TORONTO, ONT The NHL hopes to have players back in team facilities soon -- with plenty of precautions. It has not yet been determined when precisely Phase 2 will start or how long it may last, the said read. Teams are not allowed to require a player to return to a club's home city to complete any necessary quarantine measures before the workouts begin. The NHL/NHLPA Return to Play Committee has been hashing out details of what the game will look like if it's allowed to return this summer. Most NHL players have not been on the ice since the league halted its schedule, although some, including a number of Swedish players who returned home, have been skating in recent weeks.

Dozens of Metro Detroit schools already close for training, cleaning: Check the list

DETROIT – Coronavirus concerns have resulted in school closings for some Metro Detroit schools and districts. Some schools are closing on Friday to train staff on potentially holding a virtual class, while some are closing for more intensive cleaning in classrooms. Gretchen Whitmer announced all K-12 schools in the state will be closed for three weeks beginning Monday, March 13. Note: The school districts control the school closings list.
