Day 4 of UAW-GM strike: Where negotiations stand

Leaders of the United Auto Workers union initiated a strike Sunday against General Motors as contract negotiations went beyond a weekend deadline. On Tuesday, GM moved all striking union members to COBRA health insurance coverage.

The strike has reached day four, and the escalating conflict between the UAW and GM has started to settle. Both sides have been negotiating since 8 a.m., but there's no word of any potential breakthroughs that could get workers back on the job.

Facial recognition

The Detroit Police Commission voted Thursday to expand the use of facial recognition on cameras, a controversial decision that has been hotly debated.

Facial recognition technology will be added to traffic cameras. Detroit Police Chief James Craig spent the summer campaigning, offering tours of the Real Crime Center. The goal was to highlight how the Detroit Police Department plans to use the technology.

Insulin prices

A life-threatening problem is facing a growing number of patients: rationing insulin because they can't afford to pay for the amount they really need.

A recent study found nearly 18% of working-age adults with diabetes are rationing their medication because of financial concerns. That means they take smaller doses or skip doses altogether. Doctors said that's a dangerous practice that highlights a very urgent problem.

Drunk teacher

A teacher at a White Lake Township high school who blew four times the legal limit at school appeared in court Thursday in connection with a separate drunken driving case.

Michael Fletcher, 44, a teacher at Lakeland High School, was arrested Wednesday. Fletcher was in court for a bench warrant on charges of drunken driving and driving with a suspended license last year.

'Alligator-type reptile' at school pond

Officials with Bedford Public Schools said an "alligator-type reptile" was seen swimming in the biology pond on the campus of the junior and senior high schools.

The creature has been identified by animal experts as a 3-foot long caiman, officials said. A teacher reported the sighting to district officials on Friday. Building administrators have arranged for the caiman to be removed.
