Saginaw County 911 outage; Residents urged to call non-emergency number
SAGINAW COUNTY, MI-- Saginaw County 911 sent out an alert after 3:30 pm.m on Tuesday, Jan. 1 that their emergency phone system is down and experiencing difficulties. Anyone in need of aid is urged to call the non-emergency number 989-797-4580. An official with Saginaw County Central dispatch said technicians are working to resolve the matter. Saginaw County 911 has been listed as one of several agencies statewide experiencing issues with their phone system. GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A man who made numerous threatening calls to 911 was sentenced to prison. Jonathan Joshua Munafo was sentenced to two years in prison Oct. 26, by U.S. District Judge Janet Neff. He pleaded guilty May 25, to one count of communicating a threat in interstate commerce, in U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan. Two charges, interstate threatening communications and interstate harassing telephone calls, were dismissed at his sentencing. FLINT, MI -- More than six years after Genesee County 911 took over dispatching Flint police and fire calls, Police Chief Terence Green says would like to bring the program back in-house. Tim Jones, executive director of Genesee County 911, declined to comment on Green’s remarks. In September 2014, city and county officials announced plans for Flint to rejoin the county dispatch system nearly two decades after the city broke away from the group and created its own, independent operation. Officials said then that Flint’s decision to rejoin the county dispatch system would save the city about $1 million a year compared to the cost of operating its own system. The county 911 system was born in 1973 when 13 Michigan State Police dispatchers started handling calls for six police agencies and seven fire departments, according to its website.

Car hits, kills man attempting to cross M-24 on foot in Lapeer County
LAPEER, MI -- A 50-year-old Lapeer man died Sunday evening after he was hit by a car while attempting to cross M-24 in Lapeer County. Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies at 9:21 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian near the intersection of North Lapeer Road (M-24) and Sawdust Corners Road in Lapeer County’s Mayfield Township, according to a sheriff’s office news release. Christopher Luzi, 50, of Lapeer, was attempting to cross west on North Lapeer Road (M-24), north of the Sawdust Corners Road intersection, on foot. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police Lapeer Post and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. The fatal crash remains under investigation and anyone with information may contact Lapeer County Detective Sgt.

The victims were headed north when the suspect began to tailgate them. A female passenger gave the driver the middle finger when the suspect began to pass them, police said. The suspect then pulled a gun and shot at the other car, missing both the car and the passengers. A Genesee County Sheriff’s deputy stopped the suspect north of Flint at I-75 and Willard Road after their description was sent to neighboring departments.

The snowmobile entered the cul-de-sac at the end of the street and hit a tree head-on. Boyce was transported to McLaren Lapeer hospital and succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, police said. Toxicology reports are pending to determine if either drugs or alcohol are factors in this fatal snowmobile crash, police said.

As of 1:00 p.m., the eastbound lanes are open on State Street but the westbound lanes remain closed to traffic.
