Flint police chief interested in breaking away from Genesee County 911

FLINT, MI -- More than six years after Genesee County 911 took over dispatching Flint police and fire calls, Police Chief Terence Green says would like to bring the program back in-house. Tim Jones, executive director of Genesee County 911, declined to comment on Green’s remarks. In September 2014, city and county officials announced plans for Flint to rejoin the county dispatch system nearly two decades after the city broke away from the group and created its own, independent operation. Officials said then that Flint’s decision to rejoin the county dispatch system would save the city about $1 million a year compared to the cost of operating its own system. The county 911 system was born in 1973 when 13 Michigan State Police dispatchers started handling calls for six police agencies and seven fire departments, according to its website.
